I had gotten a DSL line 1.5M/768K two-plus years ago from Verizon. The install of the Westell 327W modem was uneventful and things worked swimmingly for about 6-8 months when all of a sudden every two days or so my modem would get a blinking red light and things would go off line. Minutes after I picked up my phone things would repair itself. So everytime I call customer service to report the failure things would start working and the service personnel would consider my problem user error. This continued for about a month until I realized the connection between picking up the phone and the problem clearing up. Once I realized that I had called verizon via a cell phone when the problem occurred again waded through the phone menus and hold music and after arguing with the tech that I did not need to reconfigure my network he tried to ping my modem and found that they couldn't. Which after more haggling he finally decided to open a ticket to have a field tech come and check out my line.

Once the field tech came out he found that there indeed was a problem outside my house and fixed it within an hour. After that happened for about a month or so I also notice whenever it rained the modem sometimes started going offline. Eventually that stopped.

So for about a year and a half my service has been reliable. Which is good since I work from home and need the DSL to commute into work. Recently our service was bought out from Verizon by Fairpoint Communications. I got an add which had a phone and DSL service that was $10 cheaper and twice as fast as what I was signed up. I called Fairpoint and they rectified both issues right then and there and within 4 hours my service was upgraded from 1.5M up to 3M up.

Not sure how dependent Fairpoint is on Verizon but Fairpoint's telephone people were a lot easier to understand than Verizon's. I also have come to the conclusion that as long as service is working customer support becomes a non-issue. Conversely when things don't hour long phone calls become very painful.
