    Ok, this is a long story. First, I am a network admin so I have some idea what I'm doing. (Except when I ordered Verizon!)

    Ordered back in July and paid for the modem. Got the modem within a week and eagerly hooked it up while waiting for an email back from Bell Atlantic with my details and connection date. Another week went by and finally got a date of August 15th. Verizon goes on strike! No surprise, no connection. Spent the next 2 months making approximately 3 calls a week to them about service, spent more time on hold than I care to remember, got a variety of excuses, usually ending with "well, we were on strike you know".

    FINALLY! October 23rd - connected, only because I checked, never did get a call or email to tell me. October 24th, not connected, tech support told me to download the new Winpoet for Win Me. I did, it didn't work. Turns out they screwed up my profile somehow. October 25th to today was ok, modem takes more naps than my dog, but when it works I grab everything I can find to compensate.

    October 28th - no connection, got on my trusty 56k and filed a problem report at their web site. October 29th 2.45am managed to get back on DSL and got a reply to my email (yes, they email you when you can't get online!), telling me they know what my problem was, I should re-install Windows!!

    I suspect this would make a good sitcom or movie. Bottom line is I wouldn't have Verizon if an alternative existed. Cable is supposed to be arriving soon, and I'm looking seriously at switching. If you are in an area where you are lucky enough to have a choice, choose ANYONE other than Verizon!

    UPDATE: A little overdue but I switched to OOL as soon as it was available in my area and life has been wonderful ever since. I had ONE outage (due to an extremely bad ice storm) with OOL since I got it over a year ago, the speed when I got it was phenomenal and still is (I thought cable was supposed to suck as more people joined ... another myth!) and I hope and pray that I never have to go back to DSL.

    UPDATE: 2008, still with OOL, still getting amazing speeds, still only paying $29.95 a month (triple play) for online. Still extremely happy that I'm NOT a Verizon customer anymore!

    Theres this new invention in town, its called fIOS and it rox cable in every way. Might wanna check it out.

    This is like the commecrial for OOL comparing themselves to DSL in response to a FiOS commercial. Cable is the new DSL. Maybe the new dialup.

    OOL and cable

    Comcast service sucks compared even to verizons better dsl packs...a tip for anyone; Get Business dsl and get a STATIC IP and get 2500 down and 740 k up for 69 a moth...Comcast ofers NO static IP and if you mention anything about Upspeed they will take you out into your backyard and execute you. Comcast is NO choice for internet professionals needing upspeed and a static iP that you can attach your own domains to. As for FIOS its been 5 years I am waiting and half my town has it but I live in the poorer end of town. Poor areas and minorities are the last to get service from the phone company...we were dead last when DSL came out and now we are dead last for FIOS.

    Terrible experience

    I have an experience that has been going on since march 2008 with verizon and it has been a nightmare.. i'll probably post it soon enough. Just don't even bother with their service if you have a choice.
