I could not be happier. Fast, reliable, good value for the money $49/mo. Putting in my own cat-5E homerun and whole house splitter (after getting advice from FAQs and folks in the Bellsouth forum here) has probably contributed a lot to my success.
Update: After 12 months, all of the previous still applies.
Update: Only 2 outages since Sept 2001. One was Atlanta-wide. The other was DSLAM-wide and fixed within 30 minutes of me calling tech support.
Update: 04/18/2004 I easily acquired Bellsouth's 3Mb/sec down with 384K up service for an additional $5 per month. It was enabled flawlessly and on the day promissed. Though the faster download speed is great, I am atarting to wonder if I needed it when compared to my 1.5Mb/sec service. Oh well. I am sure the use will fill the capacity soon enough. It always does with computers.
Update: 08/22/2004 Xtreme service from Bellsouth continues to be very reliable. I wanted to update this because though the service has been reliable, they really screwed up the billing after I switched to Xtreme. It took them two billing cycles and two phone calls from me before they got it right again.
Update: 03/29/2005 Still smooth sailing since last update connection-wise. DNS servers could sure use some fixing, though.
Update 08/07/2005: Xtreme continues to be very reliable. DNS servers are still not so hot. Sometimes I get multisecond response times from the DNS servers. I could circumvnet by using someone else's DNS servers and will if it ever gets intolerable.
Update 05/28/2006: Still smooth as silk.
Update 11/14/2006: Just upgraded to the 6.0 service. I put the order in online and it was effective less than 1 hour later. Still happy.
Update 05/14/2007: Still happy. A few issues with slow DNS servers over the last six months, but excellent speed reliability. Lets hope the AT&T merger does not introduce harm.
Update 12/06/2007: Still happy. There was a major DNS outage 12/03/2007 that affected all bellsouth (AT&T) customers. Fortunately for me, I was reading dslreports.com and knew what the issue was promptly, allowing me to help my wife with her laptop to avoid Bellsouth's DNS servers. Within the last 2 or 3 months, my neighborhood was upgraded to ADSL2+ which improved my speed tests a bit. My connection is solid. Now if they can just keep their services as stable then I will remain happy.
Update 06/12/2008: Still happy. Solid connection and delivered speeds. I did switch from using bellsouth's (AT&T's) DNS servers to using opendns.org's instead due to the continued issues with bellsouth's.
Update 12/25/2008: Still happy. (Are you surprised?) I have to say, though, that the "phone support" (and I use the term loosely) when you call with a problem is awful. But then again, what ISP's is not awful? Sufferred a problem a few months ago that their phone support diagnosed as a bad modem, and suggested I buy another. No thanks. Fifteen minutes after I hung up, all was well again with whatever it was in their network that caused the symptoms I saw and has been its usual rock steady since with my existing modem. Of course, I knew there was nothing wrong with my modem (or the spare I pulled off my shelf to prove to myself it was not the modem) and had tested at the NID, too, in advance of calling. So the "helpdesk" gets a grade of "F" for their script reading and inability to understand when a knowlegable user is speaking with them. And heaven forbid if you are using a real operating system (Linux) and not busted-ass windoze. Throws them immediately to the "we don't support that" page in the scripts they read.
Update 07/08/2009: The DSL service is still strong and solid. I am very unhappy, as are others, about AT&T's forced movement from the bellsouth.net mail servers to their gawd awful Yahoo servers. Just take a read in the AT&T Southeast forum here on DSLReports of some of the threads by unhappy users concerning failed features that were available when using webmail from the bellsouth servers compared to after their accounts were moved to the Yahoo servers.
On a separate topic, I have entered my ninth year here on DSLReports. This site rocks independent of AT&T eroding the goodness of the former Bellsouth.
