Update 12/18/07: Just wanted to update on the last review I made. I replaced the Westell 6100 right at two months ago now with a Netopia 3346, and I have to say, it was a great decision. Despite any storms, power outages (UPS), or other issues, the Netopia has not dropped sync once. The line is back to its old self and I can now depend on my VoIP which has been rock solid since the modem was replaced.

Update 10/08/07: Doesn't seem like I've been on DSL for 4 years now. I have since moved to SAFA (naked DSL) with the new AT&T and VoIP service, and have been very happy with the results. I did get a Westell 6100 that honestly does not seem as stable as the 2100, but the line is still very, very solid.

Update 6/04/04: Getting close to a year that I've been with BellSouth now. All has been great. I recently, after some work from my tech here at DSLR, upgraded to the Xtreme service (3.0/384k). It's absolutely fantastic. No reliabilty problems at all, still as stable as ever, just faster. I also now use a Linksys wireless router with the setup, and no problems with the service there either.

Update 9/26/03: The first time I hooked up my modem I got synch, but only at around 900k. Still, I was glad to have synch at all...latency was low and downloads were amazingly fast. However, I thought I would have to do a homerun to my bedroom in order to get full speed. I began to seriously consider it recently as my speeds were steadily dropping, bottoming out into the low 500k range, with averages of about 600k. I would have settled for the 900k again any day, but it was unattainable with any amount of tweaks. I was getting fairly ready to run a homerun when I was browsing FAQs and read the one about alarm systems. I knew my old alarm system from years ago had no power to it at all and was not connected to any monitoring service...but it was still connected, unfiltered, to the phone line. I took a shot and unscrewed the control panel from the wall and unhooked it. I went back to my bedroom and tried the connection--600k down. I was a little disappointed, but before I threw in the towel, I decided I had better reset my modem. BAM! Synched up faster than it ever had before, within a few seconds. I knew that had to be a good sign. I came straight to dslreports.com and ran a speed test--1213kbps down and 218 up! And the connection has been rock solid since. Bellsouth has been nothing but helpful to me, and I LOVE my broadband.

P.S.--Still another shoutout to my BS Transmission Engineer on the dslreports.com forums who made all of this possible.

First, I gave everything a middle-of-the-line rating until I will be able to update it when I actually sign up for Bellsouth FastAccess. Here's my story:

I was amazingly surprised on February 2nd, 2002, when the fastaccess.com website said that DSL would be available in my area on July 4th 2002, and I had the option to pre-order. So I did, that very day (there's my order 499 days ago, in case you were wondering how that happened). A few months into my wait period, some strange things started happening with my order. I never received an email from bellsouth regarding my order other than a ship date for my modem until I asked them for a status update. As it turned out, I would not be able to order DSL, but of course the sales reps didn't know why. So I figured I was out of luck, though I constantly checked back, nearly every day, to see if my phone number ever qualified. It still doesn't.

However, from my very first post explaining my situation here, I immediately got a pm from someone on these forums willing to help--this was in March 2003. I was surprised at how well-informed this person was and he tracked down the problems within a couple days--load coils and an error in the database as to how far I was from the CO--saying I was around 30,000' when I'm apparently only about 12,000'. Load coils were supposed to be removed by June 15th (yesterday), and according to my contact they have been--but the database is still acting up with the distance problem, which is currently being corrected. So after years of being on dial-up, I'm finally going to have broadband (knock on wood). I'm so very grateful to my contact here and hopefully I will have excellent service in the very near future.
