I ordered an "upgrade" (dialup -> dsl) about midnight 4/6. I rarely have use for dialup any more aside from dial-backup for when things Go Really Wrong(tm). (plus, wireless is everywhere these days.) "DSL Xtreme 6.0" is both (marginally) faster and cheaper than a cablemodem -- 6M/512 vs. 5M/384, and $42.95 vs. $44.95. And I get a free static IP -- no more reprogramming vpns everytime Time Warner changes my address (albeit rare.)
I opted for self install using my existing hardware, so there was nothing for them to ship, and no tech to dispatch. I was quoted 4/12 as the expected completion, then received my static IP via email on 4/9. When I checked the order status, it said "Done." Sure enough, when I plug the westel in, it sync'd up immediately. It lost contact with the gateway (pppoe) for about half an hour that night, but has been solidly slinging 51KB/s for the last 24hrs without a hickup. "Welcome to the New AT&T"(tm) indeed.
The only draw back... Bellsouth's DSL network is ATM based. Quoted rates are modem sync rate, not your actual attainable speed. Because of ATM, a *significant* portion of bandwidth is lost to the overhead of AAL5 -- approximately 20% on average (it depends on the traffic.) 0.5% is lost to PPPoE. That's why a "64KB/s" connection only moves ~52KB/s.
