In Albany, GA we have two main options for HSI. Either ATT or Mediacom. Pricing is roughly the same except mediacom charges an installation fee and ATT doesn't if the tech doesn't have to come in which he usually doesn't if your house is wired already. A couple things made me choose ATT over mediacom.

First of all, I'm with very familiar with ATT and DSL. I prefer DSL technology in general over cable.

Second, I knew I could get a free router (gateway) and no installation fee with ATT.

Third, Mediacom service sucks. Except for the initial installation, getting a tech out is near impossible. ATT often can have a tech out the same or next day. ATT techs in general are better at their jobs (they have better training and are paid much more for their work).

It's pretty simple around here. If you want HSI and ATT is available for you at the speed you need, then go with them over Mediacom. ATT's 6.0 extreme service isn't quite as high as Mediacom's 8mb service but the difference is not very noticeable. In fact, I've had better speeds when running multiple large downloads over ATT than Mediacom.

The only thing that would stop me from getting ATT is maybe if I couldn't get 6.0 or if I absolutely needed the speed of Mediacom's VIP speed which is around 15mb down I believe.

If you know how to get to the right people in ATT the customer service is also excellent. I was able to get my due date moved up 8 days from the original date after a few calls.

The only thing more I could want from ATT is a triple play package, such as they offer in areas with U-verse. I would love TV service but I refuse to pay Mediacom for barely working cable service and I can't have satellite in this apartment complex.

UPDATE:It's been 4 months and had to call tech support for the first time. No PPPoE connection. I knew what I needed so in under 10 minutes I got the young lady to reset the port and was back in business. There was virtually no hold time and I was very happy to not be told I was in an outage.

UPDATE 2: It's been about a year and only had one more hiccup. Called and within 10-15 minutes and a port reset, I was back in business. Great rep too, he got a passing email survey for it!
