10/1/07 Update: Upgraded to Extreme 6.0 a year or so ago when it became available. Speed is consistently fast, tests out at 6.2 at ISP's site and another Atlanta test site. Upload speed is only 412k, which is pathetic. Other than more reliable mail servers, I'd really like to see upload speed brought up to at least 768k. They block port 25, but since email providers are providing alternate ports, this isn't an issue anymore. Talking to their offshore support in India is painful. On the occasions I've had to call to report a network or server issue, I have to go through the whole dance with them checking my stuff. Doesn't matter that I provide them all the appropriate analysis that points to their server as the issue, they follow their script religiously. A real pain, I just stopped reporting issues when their servers are hosed, just not worth the trouble. Not a bad deal though for $42.95/month, and service has been good overall.
7/26/04 Update: Upgraded from Ultra (1.5/256) to Extreme (3.0/384) on 7/22/04, order was completed the next night. I didn't have to replace my original Alcatel STH external ethernet modem. Currently getting around 2.9 down and 360 up, couldn't be any happier with the service. There have been some bumps in the road since the original installation of Ultra almost 3 years ago, all due to Bellsouth's infrastructure changes and growing pains, but fortunately all has worked out well in the end. Their spam blocker catches most of the spam, and the connection reliability has been excellent. Would still like to see Bellsouth in a bit of a price war with Verizon or SBC, but all in all I'm happy with the product.
==============================
I phoned BellSouth on Oct. 4 to order ADSL. Since I wanted an external ethernet modem, they told me I needed to pay for a professional installation at $150. I went ahead and ordered, and was given an installation appointment of Oct. 20. On Oct. 10, a technician phoned me from the front of my subdivision saying he was setting up my line for ADSL. On Oct. 19, a BellSouth rep left me a voicemail reminder of my installation appointment for Oct. 20, an unexpected nice touch. On Oct. 20, the technician arrived on-time and proceeded to install an outside ADSL filter and line, and ran that to a new wall jack in my home office. He hooked up the Alcatel Speed Touch Home external ethernet modem, all the lights lit up, and synch'ed on the network straightaway. The technician installed the PPPoE drivers and had everything configured within a few minutes. Bottom line, I am getting up to 1.8 Mbps download speed, and have nothing but praise for the whole process with BellSouth. The technician was very knowledgeable and helpful, and BellSouth was on target with all their scheduling. After some of the horror stories I've read here about some of the DSL providers, I was concerned about how my experience would go with BellSouth. Let me just say that if my experience was the standard for BellSouth, they would have no competition in the DSL industry. I have certainly noticed more positive reviews than negative with BellSouth lately. Good luck to all other new subscribers.
