Update:11/12/2007: Bought a new house in a different county, so Area code and number is all different/new. My decision. I was at the limit at my Park Forest home, now I'm close enough to get elite speed. This house is new construction in Wilmington,Will county, IL. 60481. Phone was activated on 10/08/2007 and DSL scheduled for the 30th of the month to give me time to move in etc. Found it was live on 10/28/2007 and after checking things with my old login, proceeded to make a new account/username etc. Everything with the move from the ordering to tech hooking up new NID for phone and the DSL was absolutely fantastically smooth running.
Without any tweaking (although some is needed for max speed.) I'm getting 5.1mbps down and 658kbps up which is about as good as you can get. I'm very satisfied in every which way so far.
Update:06/14/2007: Monthly charge is now $19.99 per month. Now using a SBC SpeedStream 4100 modem with latest firmware, Motorola wired/wireless router, with 6 PC's and have had a stable connection as long as my phone line doesn't have problems. I am at the extreme limit for DSL but have been very happy with the service to this date. What else is there to say? I'm very happy with my DSL and when I do finally move, I hope I can get DSL at my new home..
Update: 11/18/2003: Now running a efficient 5861 modem/router so I can see my sync speeds. Was a nice stable addition instead of the linksys router with the speedstream 5100. Now with Ameritech/SBC increasing the upload caps on their packages I have gone from a package of 1500/256 to the new rating of 1500/384. I consistantly get around 320-325 upload and it's rock solid. Thanks to the techs that post in the forum (Anonamoose, Beatmeup,ADSL Guy, Beach Boy, CCCMTech and others I don't remember ) I have never had to call tech support for any reason. If by reading their posts to others doesn't answer my questions/possible problem, I just send them a IM and my questions get answered. The one time I had my speed drop, ADSL Guy looked into the problem and found a simple reboot of my DSLAM port and my speed was back. No more problems... I know that If I called tech support I wouldn't have gotten past tier 1 because I was still in the braket of my speed package... The techs that post here often end up answering questions before some people even have to ask. Just by giving info to some one who has asked a question..
Update: on 3/20/2003 I got a call from Anonnamoose as per IM's.. He took my info and put in an order for lineshare DSL.. self install kit came on 3/26/2003 just as I finished installing a DSL splitter in my NID.. next day line was live by the time I finished doing a home run to computer room. speeds were a rock solid 651/141 with the chi.speakeasy.net speed test.. Beach boy had run tests on line to see if possible to upgrade to 1500/256 dynamic package . I then IM'd Annonamoose and Beach boy on tuesday April 1st. and by friday April 4th I am cruising along at 1265/253 according to sbc's test site.. The online tech support people were just wonderfull in helping me avoid the phone tag dance.. so far my line seems quite stable even during a thunderstorm. IF the lineshare dsl proves as reliable as my UL , then I will be extremely happy.. I will leave my UL up and running for the time being just incase
Originaly ordered 768/128 sevice with dynamic ip addres by web site in late Jan 2000, in Feb had to call 800 number to order as no one called me as per web site.. order taker very polite , explained had special on for 39 per month with free equipment and free tech install.. so I jumped on it.. she even asked if I would like it installed on phone line or would I like a new line installed.. ( said new line would be no charge to run.) I took the new line do to 15 yr old line to house, and 40 yr old house wiring...told be about 2 weeks to install new line and computer install 2 weeks later.. new line installed in 3 days so had to wait 3 weeks for tech to arrive to install in computer..installer arrived right on time .. installed speedstream 3060 pci modem and drivers along with new wiring from nid to computer room and within 2 hrs I was up and surfing . no enternet 300 or any other software needed.. was running win 98se.. last year upgraded to new computer w/athlon 1.1ghz and win me.. transfered dsl modem and was still surfing with good speeds... dsl went down once in that time and a quick call to tech support showed that the problem was on their end DNS servers weren't configured right.. this year.. June.. upgraded to win xp.. knew I had to get a different modem and ordered speedstream 5360 from web site. now the trouble began... pwr , dsl light and ethernet light on... act light flashing occasionally.. but no connection.. called tech support and tried reinstalling tcp/ip stack, cycle modem, reboot computer etc.. several calls over 3 days ( approx.. 9 hrs worth ) they told me to call microsoft... I did on a sat. and spent 2 hrs on phone with a very nice helpful tech... told me that if ( a big if ) my line was good try a new nic.. installed new nic and still had problem... called sbc.. 2hrs and still telling me to reboot etc... called next day and tech listend to what I told him along with 11 hrs of tech records, and asked me to hold a moment , could hear him typing in background and he came back and told me he would get asi to come out on wed ( next day ) to physically check line.. called asi on wed and they had no record of trouble ticket spent 1 1/2 hrs on hold with them and then they found that my line was still configured for a speedstream 3060 modem ( used dial up networking to call an ENI number instead of phone number ) Turns out that the 3060 pci modem used pppoa with the unbundled loop and I needed the line reconfigured to work with 5360 modem which is pppoe once ASI reconfigured my line I was up and running by time I got home from work... except for the odd couple of busy times I usually get 647/136 on my line and I'm running a linksys befsr41 router using the built in pppoe function... I'm happy and I'll stick with ameritech, as long as I keep getting this dependable service.. one minor outage in 2 yrs and one terrible outage due to their screw up when I upgraded to win xp . I think that is good service....
