    I've had DSL service through AT&T (was SBC) in the Ameritech region for several years. I am now at the 6000/768 Kbps tier. I am luck to have AT&T, TW, and WOW to choose from in my area. I choose to stay with DSL because of the great service in the direct forum, the reliable connection, and the low price.



    I switched from cable to DSL because the Time-Warner connection was unstable at my house, but after a half-dozen truck rolls, they could not fix it. Ironically, a level two or level three customer service rep. said that TW could not monitor my modem -- that was the last straw. I had DSL Reports monitoring it already with the cheap tools you can buy here. AT&T has been rock-solid stable ever since the day I got it. For me, reliability is the most important feature.



    I cannot praise the staff in the AT&T Direct forum enough. The are a great asset. I would not have switched to DSL if they were not there to answer my questions. They have also helped me convert more than three other customers to DSL by pre-qualification. They are amazing for trouble-shooting problems once you have service too. Fortunately, I have not needed help that way.



    Billing and availability are the two bad points of AT&T. If you make a change to your plan, it may not be reflected on your bill. Once you call in, they will credit you, however it can take several months to show up accurately on your bill. This was a bigger issue when AT&T had one-year DSL contracts for a reduced price, because you never knew what you would be billed for at the end of the term. Now that AT&T has month-to-moth contracts it should not be an issue unless you make a change.



    Availability is another bad point for AT&T. Not all customers can get it and, if you can get DSL, you may not be able to get all the speed levels. Even worse, AT&T will sell you DSL and later cancel the order because of your distance from the equipment. To overcome this problem, visit the AT&T Direct forum and ask about pre-qualification for DSL at your address. (Read the special rules for that forum before posting.) The technicians their are great and will research your location. The other aspect of availability for DSL is the time from order to go live with DSL service. It takes a while for all the things to happen behind the scenes, so a one to two week wait is not uncommon. This can be frustrating if you are use to a faster response from a cable company.



    There are a few other perks with AT&T DSL. You can use a dial-up connection, even when your home is using DSL. This is nice for travelers. And dial-up is a nice backup should you have a high-speed outage. At the "Pro" or "Elite" levels, you also can use AT&T WiFi hot spots.



    The bottom line is I could switch to two other services tomorrow, but I stay with AT&T DSL because they provide good service at a good price.
