Today was the first day I have ever used DSL. So far so good.
I got fed up with Charter so I called at&t for DSL - specifically dry loop as I haven't had a landline in over 3 years. Unfortunately, because I wanted dry loop, I was unable to order online which voided some online-only offers. However, because I switched from cable, I am eligible for a 3 month free after MIR deal.
Oddly, I ended having to call HSI tech support number to get sales. When I called the other numbers for at&t, I would go through the whole automated system (multiple times) then get told all reps were busy and to try again later. 2 strikes so far: can't order online and automated system doesn't work. I finally got the sales dept through the tech support line and explained to the rep what happened. He was confused but I'm not sure how far it went after that.
I ordered DSL on Dec 28. Surprisingly, I told him I was not interested in local landline service and I was never asked about it again (he did try to push wireless, though, but gave up very shortly after I said I would consider it if at&t would buy out my current contract). I received the modem on Jan 2 and my line was to go active on Jan 7.
I didn't get it hooked up until tonight (Jan 8) because of a problem with the phone jack just behind my desk. Installation went okay until the software was unable to connect to the server to verify my account. I had to call tech support and walk through manual verification and activation. While the tech support agent was not in the US, I was able to understand her okay - so kudos to them for getting people on the line who can speak and understand English - at least the rep I talked to anyway. After 20 minutes I was online.
A quick speed test on DSLR posted around 1300/300 on a 1500/384 (Express) connection.
As the weeks progress I will update this as necessary.
Plus: Not a bad price for a fair speed. Charter's minimum speed is now 5M at $50+/mo. I was on 3M and happy with it at the price. Minus: Must be too far from the CO since Express was the fastest I could order. I would've paid more for a faster speed (Pro at $29.99/mo).
Plus: Speed of order and equipment sent to my house. Sales rep was very helpful and not pushing for the add-on or oversell. Minus: Considerable amount of trouble just to place an order.
Plus: I guess new installs need to leave modem on for speed to build. My speed was already in an acceptable range right out of the gate. Minus: Some trouble with the install software which required tech support.
Plus: So far I am very satisfied with the service only hours after installing it. Minus: Hope reports from around the area are right about the stability of the service and I don't get burned.
