Prior to ordering AT&T DSL Direct, I had been using Time-Warner for my broadband service. There were sporadic outages, but most importantly, the price was OUTRAGEOUS. Even though I had a top level cable TV plan and owned my own cable modem, I was still paying over $50 month! When my one-year contract ended with TWC, I immediately ordered DirecTV and AT&T DSL Direct.
I have been using the AT&T DSL Direct (naked/unbundled) HSI Pro package since I signed up with AT&T. This is the 3000/512 service in the Cleveland market. I typically get speeds around 2500/400 in most speed tests. The price is $28.99/mo and for whatever reason they have never added any other fees or even taxes.
The order process was a little hairy but not awful. My first gripe is there is no online ordering for DSL Direct - you must call and speak to a rep. Not a huge deal, but I work nights and for the most part prefer doing everything online. When I called, the sales person was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the product, which was quite refreshing. I placed the order, got a turn-on date, and was promised a self-install kit in 3-5 business days. Well, 10 business days went by and no word... so I called back and again got a friendly rep who informed me there was absolutely no record of my original call. So I placed the order again, and this time got a turn on date of only 2 days after the original one. No big deal. I got the modem, a Motorola 2210 after only 2 days and immediately went to work wiring my home run.
The turn on date came and went, and nothing happened.. The next day, just as I was getting ready to make another phone call, I heard noises on the outside of my house and was pleasantly surprised by the presence of an install tech. He informed me that he tried to get me up and running yesterday, but ran out of time because there were some problems. He was having trouble finding a clean loop to my house because there hadn't been landline service here in some time. He finally discovered the problem was actually the drop from the pole to my NID but ran out of time the day before. So he ran a new drop and bingo, problem solved!
I considered these order/install snafus not to be too big of a deal, especially now. The service has been rock solid since install, the price is awesome, and the equipment has been working flawlessly.
Oh, the Motorola 2210 did cost me $50 up front. There are no contract or free equipment offers for DSL Direct.
