I now feel that i am no longer alone.

My experience with Bell Atlantic cannot be described in words. I went through a living hell for 4 months costing me at least 30 hours of hold time and 3 days of missed work.

My original install date was Sept 8. As is the standard operating procedure for monopolies, they required a 5 hour show-up window. Well, Sept 8th came and went without a word from bell Atl. As 5pm approached, I decided to call them (Amazingly, I only waited about 20 minutes on hold). The person I spoke to had no record of my file or my scheduled appointment - BTW - 1 week after I set up my appointment they very efficient;ly managed to post the bill to my credit card. I'll spare you the details but this game of cat and dog lasted for 2 full months. During which time 2 more appointments were made with no one ever showing up. However, on one of the many random days, I did get a call at work saying that the bell atl tech was waiting outside my apartment. Needless to say i rushed home. The tech proceeded to examine my phone and pull out some wiring. Not being an expert but also not being an idiot, I asked him what he was doing and he told me that he was installing a "new phone line", hesitantly i asked him there was something wrong with my current line for the dsl install. He had noooooo clue about a dsl installation. He came to install a regular line. He then called into his office and explained that there was some confusion and left. Anyway, September and october came and went with several false starts and a dead phone line for 2 weeks (Can you believe this? a dead phone line!) I soaked up the irony though - in an effort to improve my connectivity, I found myself worse off then when i fisrt started. About 2 weeks ago, having almost given up on bell atl i decided to call them to finally get closure. As was usual, I was on hold for 1.5 hours before i got through. Someone finally informed me that they finally figured out what the problem was - I wasnt close enough to the CO to get DSL.!@??!@!!!!!! I just started to laugh.

I really think the problems at bell atl are a legacy of big monopolistic business practices. I have never ... ever.... experienced something so utterly frustrating and I also feel that the level of competency there is minimal.
