UPDATE 29 JUN 2009: At my last update, I noted various issues involving choppiness, dead air, etc... VOIPo quickly responded with some suggestions on how to improve the service. I must say that, since following the directions in their email, as well as adding one or two steps based on information gleaned here on the boards, my VOIPo is performing wonderfully. All calls seem to ring through normally, and the audio has been terrific.

Bottom line on this piece: Take a look at QoS and Port Forwarding.

So far, so good...

UPDATE 23 JUN: I've been running on Voipo for about two months now. While I'm quite satisfied with the tech support from a response standpoint, I am very disappointed in the service. I had grand hopes that this would be "the" service that I have been looking for the past few years. So far, no.

A few issues I've noticed: Several times, I call home. Phone never rings (for me... it does ring at home), and nothing but dead air. I hang up. Wife calls back, wanting to know why I hung up on her. "I could hear you moving around and mumbling..." Same thing has happened when I answer the phone at home. Just dead air. The caller can hear me, but I can't hear them.

Next issue: LOTS of echos. LOTS of echos. It gets quite annoying, to be honest.

Next issue: Key tones... but no keys are pressed. If I talk to my wife for 10 minutes, I'll hear the "BEEEP" of a key being pressed about 15 times. VERY annoying over a 15 minute call.

As has already been stated, the documentation *really* sucks.

I'll be attempting to follow up with tech support on these issues, as I am quite satisfied with their quality and speed of response. I still have high hopes for Voipo, if for no other reason than they *seem* to want to be a better phone service. Hopefully, time will bear that to be true.

Update 16 MAY 2009: I've been running on VOIPo for about a week now. Am finding the service to have pros and cons, as one would expect. Choppy voice quality on lots of calls... I have found some relief from the broken audio by adjusting the QOS settings within my Linksys WRT54G router running Tomato. To reiterate, the choppiness has not totally disappeared, but it has improved somewhat since making adjustments on my end.

The vPanel is still clunky, I find. I'm not sure how much of it really is clunkiness, and how much is my acclimation to a different company and the way their site runs. I'm sure that lends itself to the discussion in some capacity, yet the site still could use some major improvements. Example: Upon entering a contact, I feel it should be possible to continue entering contacts without having to go back to the beginning, click Contacts, and start anew. Perhaps this is by design, but I feel it more of an oversight, really.

The price is still holding me. I have been discussing with my wife, and we're mixed on our feelings just yet. On the one hand, we've grown to appreciate the existing company we have... except for the price increase we'll see should we renew with them. On the other hand, we would like to help another company succeed while getting a good price on a decent service. We've still got two more weeks to make our mind up... I'll continue updating this review as I move along.

I'm still in the early testing stages, but am concerned that vPanel access seems limited. I've attempted multiple times to access my account since the adapter arrived, but have been unable to do so. Prior to the adapter's arrival, I did log in and was able to get a general feel for the site. I found it a bit clunky, though navigable.

Service for day one has been decent. Made a few calls. Everything went through and the sound was excellent. I'm quite happy so far with that, though I do want to hear it work for a week or two before extolling their virtues.

Maybe it's just me, but the vPanel thing does bother me in an inexplicable way... Seems that should be the easy thing to keep running, as it's not in my house but on their servers. Sure hope it's not indicative of spotty service.

Will update again in a week or so.

Port Forwarding

We replied to this in your ticket, but these issues are tyically fixed 99% of the time by enabling port forwarding on your router. May newer routes to try to handle everything and do not properly allow the audio connections through.

If you need assistance wit port forwarding, just update your ticket and support can help you with it.

Re: Port Forwarding

Thanks, Tim... I'll be trying that tonight. When it works, I'll be certain to update accordingly.
