I've had BellSouth DSL (3Mbps) for 8 years without complaint, used for remote office and VOIP (via Vonage) Telephony services. I recently was forced to down grade due to cost constraints from my company.

Naked DSL is now available from AT&T (who bought out BellSouth 2 years ago). I downgraded to 768Kbps and the DL speed of 768 is fine. My big complaint with AT&T is their website shows an UL speed of 384Kbps for DSL w/o Phone line. As it turns out, that is for other markets and NOT the Southeast. Here, service seems to still be under the BellSouth website moniker. In any event, the UL speed for basic DSL is only 128 Kbps - which is not sufficient for quality VOIP.

My choices are to upgrade back to 3Mbps service (to get 384 Kbps UL) or switch to Comcast. Overall, there is not enough competition in the southeast to provide us with quality service an reasonable rates. I say this because my co-workers in other parts of the country have access to good basic DSL speeds for low cost ($20-30/mo) or very high speeds (meaning Fios) for equal cost ($50-60/mo).

BTW, the bundle packages are all very expensive when discussing VOIP. Even an standard landline for phone service is more expensive than Vonage.

You could do the 1.5 Mbps

You could do the 1.5 Mbps and Magic-jack it.
