I got DSL service installed for my parents, who were finally ready to be done with dial-up. Cable internet had been available in their town for several years, but as non-TV customers, they would be paying $56/mo for cable internet service. That was too much. Qwest put a DSLAM in an RT near their home in 2004 and sent them a notice that their line was qualified for DSL. I called Qwest to find out what speeds they were offering and told my father to get the 256K since it would be fine for what he was doing. I ordered a Cisco 678 ATU-R off Ebay. I had heard that the Actiontec equipment that Qwest was sending out was a bit flaky and required frequent reboots. I'd had a 675 before and it was very reliable. Qwest sent him an envelope in the mail with a CD for the Actiontec, but no username or password or instructions for setting up other equipment. I plugged in the 678 and called DSL tech support. I talked to a guy in Boise, Idaho who was very helpful and had me up and going in 5 minutes. The service has been very reliable and my parents say it has only gone down once. Speed is about 210K/s, apparently due to the overhead of ATM. But for browsing the web and e-mail, that speed is just fine. They appreciate not having the phone line tied up, and I appreciate not hearing a busy signal when I call them. It's also nice for me not to have to deal with dial-up when I visit.
My only big complaint is that the sales people we dealt with weren't very helpful.
Update:
Parents still on Qwest DSL and it's still working just fine. I thought they should upgrade to 1.5M service but they don't want to pay the extra couple of dollars for it.
