Recently moved into a new house (in the same zip/town). Found out Qwest only offers 1.5Mbps speed in the area, with NO plans to upgrade to the so-called adsl fttn. Rural area, but has Comcast around. Unfortunately, Qwest offers 7Mbps across the river, but because we aren't as dense (or for whatever reason they deem this area "unprofitable"), no plans to upgrade. Comcast hadn't finished the area quite yet, so I needed something until they service my subdivision. The customer service is just awful. I needed to setup online billing (couldn't get it activated online), and was told by three different people to chat with the CS rep online through the chat box. At least that got resolved, but what if I had trouble with my online service? Am I gonna get bumped around to different departments until I give up? Their interleaving crap on the line makes gaming a joke. 32ms of extra overhead ruins a lot of things. Nowhere near the 768Kbps upload speed, more like 256Kbps. Not exactly ideal on the down either, probably @ 1.2. For the price, it is hard to keep them around as it isn't worth the cost/speed ratio. I'd rather pay the extra $20 for Comcast, and I get 3X the speed.
Pros. - Easy install, (self install kit), clean service (i.e. no outages, no filter problems), convenient (they do have service in a lot of areas), adequate speeds for the listed service.
Cons. HORRIBLE customer service. Slow speeds, barely what is advertised (if you use the Internet for anything other than email, shopping, 1.5 DSL is NOT for you). Dysfunctional website; for setting up your accounts, it can be quite a task. Interleaving on the line adds 32ms of ping basically. No plans to upgrade the area.
