I have had cable internet for nearly six years, first through @home then through ATTBI. I was extremely happy with my cable, but due to a move had to forsake it for DSL. After much thought I settled on SBC Yahoo! Internet as my provider. I ordered their basic service at $29.95 a month for the first six months. Everything went smoothly with my order and my 2Wire modem/router showed up quickly. After some trouble with the installation (the Tier 1 Tech guy tried to tell me I had to use Win XP PPPoE even with the router!), I was up and running….sort of. I dropped connection VERY frequently the first week and after numerous calls, it was decided that a tech would come out to my house.

He arrived on a Monday morning and after testing my line, decided I had a bad card at the Dmarc. He stated he would be back to fix it and would call me back later to give me more details. About 45 minutes after he left I received a call from “Lisa” from ASI/SBC she stated (almost an EXACT quote!) “We have run a test on your line and you are showing 25, 000 feet from the CO, that is too far. We are denying service, please send our equipment back. Thank you, good-bye!”

She didn’t say she was sorry, didn’t apologize for the inconvenience, and didn’t make any suggestions on where I could get service. Nothing! Just that short, curt, rude message!

I, of course, panicked. I began calling satellite services, wireless and anything else I could think of to get broadband access. After some research I decided to try IDSL.

After talking to the guys on the dslreports forum, I contacted Speakeasy.

From the first Speakeasy was a total change from SBC. The sales-person was polite, and helpful. I gave him my address and told him I was interested in IDSL. He put me on hold to check my address and distance from the CO and came back with surprising results! I was NOT 25, 000 feet from the CO as SBC stated, I was 12,110! I didn’t see how that was possible since SBC owned the lines and one would think that THEY would know better than Speakeasy! We decided to put the order through as normal DSL and see if it worked.

As you may guess, it DID! I am getting great speed, very solid connection and no problems that I can tell. Speakeasy has been great from the beginning. I cannot recommend them enough. SBC on the other hand was horrid. The tech support guys that I talked to didn’t know what they were doing, they LIED to me about the CO distance and they lost a customer.

I work at a major computer retailer in the Dallas area, I have five to ten people a day ask my recommendation for broadband access, and I promise I will NEVER recommend SBC. Speakeasy on the other hand will get my whole-hearted recommendation every time!
