Update 01/01/07
Being a LONG TIME Speakeasy subscriber I can say with much sadness that I am now considering my other options. Paying $125 for a 6.0/768 line is just not price competitive anymore, and the "extra service" and reliability is almost non-existent. A good example was this last Friday when my connection went down around 7pm. I went the the Speakeasy Status page and they had noting on there about it. So I called tech support, which did at least did admit they were having packet loss issues in the Seattle POP. Service didn't come back up until 12:30am . They should have at least updated the status page or their phone status message so I didn't have to waste my and the customer service reps time. On a side not actually downtime is very rare, but ping times have been increasing over the years.
There also seems to be a lack of community anymore on the DSLR web forum, as the Speakeasy reps really don't post anymore. There also hasn't been anything new in the form of service offerings. Something like free anti-virus/firewall software or special deals would really help take the bite out of paying $125 a month.
Guess I will have to bid Speakeasy farewell soon.. it was fun while it lasted.
Update 8/26/03:
Having some issues with download speeds again, and this time looks like the second hop from my computer is the problem. Getting 60-80% packet loss on that router, causing a lot of retransmissions. Others are having the same issues, but their rep in the forums was quick to respond and they are looking into the problem. Speakeasy also announced a $10 reduction in the cost from $99 to $89 for a 1.5/768 connection. I have to say great things about their tech support and response to technical issues. A first pick for anyone looking for a great broadband connection with a real human being on the other end of the phone.
Update 6/23/03:
Still very reliable service. Yesterday was the first time I have seen any problems with the service. Looks as if there were some routing issues within my subset with the routing. Since then the download speed has dropped a bit. Still waiting to see if it improves. Overall very happy with Speakeasy and their service!

I was first tempted to sign up with Speakeasy because my Qwest DSL service just wasn't doing it for me. Since Qwest had started moving people to MSN this year it seems like the Qwest.net service has started to loose valuable features like their home page. I have heard great things about Speakeasy, and was tempted again when I got the free X-Box/PS2 promotion. (Didn't really need one because I have both). I still decided to bite on this offer since I wasn't tied into any contract with Qwest, and they also had many other great features such as the free Fileshack usage with the gamers package.
I called in and signed up for the 1.5/108 Gamers package, but it was incorrectly put in as the 608/108 package for $59.99 a month. The 1.5/108 is only $10 a month more ($69.99 a month) and well worth the extra money. I called back and they said they would upgrade the speed when I got my line connnected.
I was amazed that it only took five business days to get switched over to their service. Covad mailed the regular install package with a Zyxel Prestige 645M modem and filters. Installation was a breeze
I should be back up to 1.5/108 this Monday now that I'm up and running, and everyone that has helped me has been fast to respond and helpful.
Overall I have had a great experience with Speakeasy, and would recommend them to anyone for DSL service.
