Whew! The wait is over. Bell Atlantic installed my DSL today and so far it's working GREAT! Full connection speeds, absolute compatibility with all my former modem connection requirements, and a cute little wall-mounted Westel modem to boot.

Not that I didn't have my problems. I first ordered DSL from InternetConnect in July, and that 8 week fiasco ended in complete frustration when, after installing the line inside and everything, they couldn't get it to connect. "Too far from the CO" they said. 16,000+ feet.

Which is just what Bell Atlantic said when I called to order InfoSpeed. So I figured "tough luck...wait for cable." But then I got an itch, and I carefully measured the most likely paths between me and my CO on a topo map, and there was just NO WAY I was that far in line feet.

Also lucky for me that I work in telecom (but NOT for an RBOC anymore) and my boss passed me the contact info for the Head of Facilities at Bell Atlantic in Massachusetts. I left him a message, and he got one of his folks to look into the issue, and it turns out there was an error in the old wiring databases that the phone center people use to determine if someone can get access. He got that error resolved in one day, and I was able to order the service over the phone.

From that point on, everything went perfectly smoothly. For the final install today, I received 5 different reminder messages, so they were clearly paying attention to my case. And as I said at the opening, it's working fine.

So my final review is this: I urge everyone to be patient with DSL. These old copper facilities were never designed for this stuff, and all the phone companies are working hard to improve the physical plant and the ordering processes. And some people will just be out of luck for a myriad of reasons, most of which are unavoidable.

But when that Bell Atlantic guy finally turns on the modem and those little green lights stop blinking and show a successful synch, it's the most glorious thing you can imagine!

Good luck to everyone.
