inside/outside wiring

When using a CLEC such as Covad, all Ameritech's responsibility is to install the line to your phone box, which is considered the outside wiring. Covad is responsible for all inside wiring, from the phone box to your computer. Ameritech did exactly what they were supposed to do.

A Long Saturday, but Looking Brighter

Well, this is my story. From the time I ordered DSL from Earthlink, to install, it took about 2 1/2 weeks. However, if I did not pester them about not receiving any confirmation as to when Verizon was to be out and check my line and Covad installing the DSL, it would have been longer. I was fortunate to call Earthlink several times to be sure I had the software, and they finally sent me the software but no instructions. The Covad tech came around 9am and check out the phone and proceeded to the installation. Then after installing the NIC, the video some got knocked out, I was the one to get the video to display and then after bootup, the installation caused my 800X600 resolution to get kicked into 640X480 and with 16 colors. I was again got that fixed myself, I was getting the feeling this Covad really wasn't all together, although a very nice person. He had to call another tech a few times to get the system up and communicating. He then left, this was my fault, I should have held him there till the reboot process. Well, my Sound Card is not working, I keep getting the error message, not detected and in the Device manager, it does not show any signs of sound card installed. I was having a problem accessing my ATT mail and mindspring Mail, but I called in and even though you had to wait more than 20 minutes, I was able to get those problems resolved. Well, the other part of the story is that my system continues to freeze up since the addition of DSL, my mouse especially, so I replaced my mouse with an older version and at least now, the freezing has subsided greatly. I went to the tweak site and getting a fairly good d/l and u/l ratio. Thanks for the information on Tweaking.... it really helped Greatly... Now I am on a 6 month contract and wait to see how often Outages will occur during that time before I permanently decide to stay with DSL instead of Cable. My question I guess is the tech liable for my "Sound Card" or am I have to absorb it.???

Re: A Long Saturday, but Looking Brighter

sounds like an irq issue. i doubt there is anything wrong with your sound card. more likely your computer is having an issue with the nic card, and that will be why your video was wacked out and you lost your sound and so on. you can try putting the nic into into a different slot to see if it solves the problem...

Huh?

How in the world did a RoadRunner Cable review end up

Hmm?

Perhaps you should slow down and watch where you put your review? You have Earthlink DSL with Covad as the clec and Ameritech as the telco? What does all that have to do with Roadrunner?

Can you control your anger, bud? Its ok to defend yourself but to make those idiotic comments yourself is pretty foolish, just write another review for roadrunner and forget about this one.

earthlink dsl speed

I can only say this on Earthlink dsl home networking set, once we changed router/modem to Netgear all in one product, the issues mostly stopped. 95% of our problems stopped getting rid of linksys router and earthlink's modem they supply. Hope this helps.

Re: earthlink dsl speed

Yes, things do go bad after 10 Years or even 5 Years so either your Modem or your Router had started to fail and instead of diagnosing which one of the two were bad you replaced both and that fixed the issue. Pretty common, except the skipping of diagnosing of which device was failing.

Re: crap

Can't agree with you there. I've been a satisfied EarthLink customer since the mid-1990s, starting out with dial-up service, briefly being a Verizon DSL customer and eventually migrating to EarthLink DSL. I've only experienced two DSL outages in the last five years -- first, when Verizon's Westell modem/router failed and I eventually figured it out, pressing the EarthLink Zyxel modem into service a couple of days later; second when saboteurs cut the fiber optic trunk lines in south San Jose, California and everyone's telephone, Internet and cell phone service, including E-911 service, was out for about 8 hours. Neither of these outages were EarthLink's fault.

I have had Earthlink ADSL at two distant sites in Oregon and their ADSL service has been completely unreliable and after many hours on the phone with their support staff their assistance has been useless. For the first of my three years of ADSL service was very good (I had dial up for 10 years) then suddenly in 2009 it literally fell apart with no more than several minutes of connectivity with many times of none at all.

Distance is frequently the DSL killer

quote:
I have had Earthlink ADSL at two distant sites in Oregon
The lines have to be maintained when distance is an issue so the local telco likely dropped the ball in keeping your lines clean, noise free and error free. It is hard to deliver product if the road is out frequently.

Sorry that you had troubles.

Cancelled my Verizon 640/90 @ $40 service on 3/5. Ordered Earthlink (Mindspring/Covad) 1.5/384 @ $50 service on 3/6. Got emailed confirmation of order within 48 hours. Order status page at Earthlink was updated within 4 days.

My activation date was 3/14 and all went smoothly. I was provisioned on 3/16 and I was online by 5 PM with incredible speeds (1300/300) without tweaking.

It may have helped that I Fedexed a letter to Verizon Presidential Appeals pleading with them to release my DSL line in a timely manner (which they did on 3/12).

All in all I have had a terrific experience with Earthlink/Mindspring/Covad and I hope it continues.

The unexplained email and DSL outages with Verizon were totally unacceptable so I look forward to outstanding service with Earthlink/Mindspring.

Jump forward to April 20. Earthlink is WONDERFUL !

If you can qualify for Mindspring/Covad service then what are you waiting for ? Just do it !

Jump forward to 3 years later. Still with Earthlink DSL. Great speeds 1.5/384 at a great price.

Jump forward to almost 4 years later. Still with Earthlink/Covad DSL. I have just received a free speed upgrade from 1.5 to 3.0 service. Double the speed with no price increase? Life is sweet. Thanks Earthlink/Covad!

Jump Forward to 5 1/2 years later. Still with Earthlink/Covad DSL. I have just received ANOTHER free upgrade from 3.0 to 6.0 service. In addition, my monthly rate was reduced by $10.00 to match an offer only available to new subscribers. I am married to Earthlink. I cannot find one negative thing to say about them.

Jump forward to 9 years later. Still with Earthlink/Covad DSL. Still a very happy customer. Thank you Earthlink. Thank you Covad!

Rates are maximum rates, not minimum rates. Tweaking is done to maximize the dynamics behind the physical loop characteristics and distance from a CO.

Ohhh, The Horror!

Life is indeed interesting. I ordered Earthlink (Bell South as the local loop controller) After several Bell South dispatches, BS says they are good to the remote terminal, but can't sync to the nic. So they are going to dis-qualify my line! Very strange. Why not switch out cable pairs? An EL employee says that telco does not like to spend extra time and money on getting DSL to work, especially if the customer is going through another provider like Earthlink. He suggested that he has seen a line "disqualified" by telco only to magically work once the service is ordered through the controlling LEC. It looks like I will have to try this. It is a big pain to have to go through all of this just to attempt to get DSL service.

I don't know how to post a speed test. My speeds are consistently in the 1255-1325 range (down). Upload is always in the 300-330 range. No, I did not pay for a modem of any setup fees. Just a one year contract at $49 per month for 1500/384 service...

Great customer service
no free modem anymore, not smooth when switching from dsl to standalone dsl
I have been pretty happy with Earthlink since 2001

I have been with earthlink dsl service since 2001. The upload and download speeds are adequate for my use, which is internet sales and web page design.

The only problem I have had was when we got rid of our land line and switched to stand alone dsl. This did not go smoothly and I spent a few hours talking with customer service on the phone and by chat, but it was all resolved after about a week.

I would recommend earthlink dsl to anyone.

My account says I have a 6.0mpbs download speed, I rarely see above 2.5mbps. As I work at home I need reliabililty and speed in that order. Presently I am experiencing neither.

Try Covad provisioning if you are on AT&T provisioning.

I have had the Covad provisioned 6 Meg DSL for a long time and it is near flawless (still have it). I've seen AT&T provisioning to be less than the best out of the two providers that Earthlink uses (when both are available in your CO). Covad provisioning will not be an option if you are on a AT&T Remote DSLAM as it is only in local COs that have co-location facilities for CLECs.

Another user with the same long term results I've had.

**UPDATE 5/25/10**

I moved away for school while my parents still had the service, until about Winter 2009. I switched them to a comcast triple play that actually costs less than what they were paying before with this EL combo and Comcast cable TV. Overall the comcast is cheaper, more reliable, and cheaper.

Sorry EL. just couldn't compete

**UPDATE** 12/16/07

Overall has been alright. I have had to switch back to older modem which gives faster but not advertised speeds only because I couldn't keep a constant signal at those speeds. Rate increasing $5/mo for no real reason too wasn't very nice of them. But as apparently Earthlink is going under I guess they could use it....

Now: just only Satisfied..

Note: I have the earthlink DSL/Home phone combo

I have been an earthlink DSL customer for 7 years now, but now just recently upgraded (even though its technically not upgrading its a completely new service) to their DSL/Home Phone service. Ordered online after doing an online chat with a rep, asking some questions about pricing, speeds, etc. Was satisfied with the answers and speeds have lived up to that.

I get lots more features on my home phone including caller id, voicemail which I probably will never use, 3 way calling (I think), and call waiting. Before I was paying $22/mo for just local and some cents/min for long distance which basically never used. Also did not have all the features cause I didn't want to pay more for them.

The speeds I get are 6700/850 (down/up), around that which I'm very satisfied with. Before I was paying $50/mo for 2500/300

$69.99 for the over twice as fast DSL, basically same home phone service with lots more features

Downside:

Installation didn't go 'smoothly'. The kit arrived fine and my installation date was 6/11. I call them after nothing happens on that day and they say that they are very sorry and it will be on by noon the next day, 6/12. Nothing happens by then either and I get the run around saying they are real sorry and should be on soon. I call later that night and they say it should be on sometime the next day 6/13. It actually did get activated on 6/13 sometime in the morning, and everything works fine now. I did not have any home phone service from 6/12-6/13 til it was on though which is not good. I have cell phones though which made up for it. My DSL from before (also from earthlink) was up the whole time from what I could tell, was just not the upgraded speeds until it was activated. So no real problems there just the delay.

I was also told TWICE that they would give me 'complementary follow up' calls when there was some news. I got none, I just got home on 6/13 and the service was on. Would have been nice to know what was going on.. oh well

Overall:

I'm happy. Real fast.

I believe that Earthlink contracts out its DSL connectivity. I don't care. I have frequent connectivity issues. Earthlink techs told me I needed a new modem. Later on that night, the conneciton lock up and seemed to work well. I called and was told they fixed the problem, but when I asked how, they told me repeatedly "don't worry about it, its fixed." I asked if I still needed the modem and was told no. Then a month later I got a bill for a new modem. I contacted them and they insisted they sent a new modem. Finally, they gave me the tracking info. They sent it to an old address in another city.I asked if they even knew where I get DSL service. The tech eventually responded with the right city, but then tried to say that it was my fault that the information in their system was wrong. I asked the tech how they managed to get me hooked up to DSL in New York in the first place if they only had my Pittsburgh address. The only answer I got to that was "we will credit your account."

Service used to be good. I have a netcom account, I have been a customer that long. But, when you can go to inmotion hosting and get sophisticated webspace, email and tools for $6.95 a month, ($3.95 if you go super cheap) and you can go to Cablevision and get a solid fast connection for $19.95, why stick with Earthlink. My only answer is my email address that I have had for more than a decade.

I used to recomend Earthlink Netcom to friends. Now, I warn them away from it.

EL dsl problems...

I used to get good connectivity, but now, it doing something like 95K, and occasionally drops out. I think Quest has something to do with that as it is their lines and rack space, so I think they think we will all come running to them when we get sick of our connection. Ain't gonna happen. Funny thing is that Covad is the prime provider of Earthlink's DSL service, and I spoke with a rep at Covad and she said my connection should be much faster. We are fixing to move, and I think I'll move to another company for my connection.
