We have choices here between comcast, slow att universe and omsoft. Omsoft has been around for a long time and they are friendly people. I pay for a fast connection, and it varies from 350 to 1500. Their phone and email service is great, they even sent a tech out to my house to exchange a router. I don't know where the fault lies, but it seems that the system bogs down and I don't get what I pay for. It might not be them though. All joking aside, omsoft is fantastic. They are small and that is not a hindrance. We have had omsoft dsl service since '02 and only twice have we had issues and both times, the owner, Rob, sent a service person to our address to investigate the issue on the same day we called. If you like quality service and supporting a top notch small business, I say drop the multi-national corporations that you are currently throwing money towards and get omsoft. member for 22 years, 1049 visits, last login: 12.3 years ago lodged 15.5 years ago
Can't imagine a better ISP. (Purchase by joining DCN.) Other options: As her friends tell her of the local phone company's nationally affiliated ISPs (with long contracts and unending, hidden fees), and Comcast (slow with almost sadistic employees) with Lingo (what more needs be said), a granddaughter regularly starts to throw away her mother's package: very reliable 1 Mbps (now 1.5) download link, 384 Kbps upload link, (enough for video SIP phones on a Mac) and free DCN classes. Young people. Installation: I believe DCN had Omsoft handle the local telco; & either DCN or Omsoft sent a young man who competently connected her Mac (though I modified it). First DSL modem died after a couple years: verified quickly over the phone, we picked up a new Efficient Networks Speedstream 5100. We only wish the DSL modems would sleep when not in use, as all other computing components do. Usually very competent help by phone or e-mail, though occasionally someone has at least tried hard. Always a very pleasant experience. Never a threat to even slow our connection when bill couldn't be paid for nearly a year. Volunteers offer free classes in downtown Davis, and DCN was associated with the local Linux Users Group. One small organization fits all needs. - retired supercomputer consultant member for 18.8 years, 31 visits, last login: 12.4 years ago updated 16.6 years ago
Have had ADSL with Omsoft since it was first available here in the fringe area of Mace Ranch. Worked fine, though I noticed the line would drop whenever someone would pick up a phone even though we were using line filters. When I called, Omsoft recognized it was a line problem and dealt with Pacbell (now SBC now AT&T??)...fixed in a day or two. Try that with a huge corporation! They've come out to my house TWICE to help with Windoze install problems, NO extra charge!! I have 1536/384 static IP. BTW, I have the internal modem, just called to see about an external modem, they have them for $35 in-store which seem pretty reasonable to me. member for 19.3 years, 62 visits, last login: 9.9 years ago lodged 17.3 years ago
I ordered 1500/384 PPPoE service, expecting something less at 15200 feet from C.O. The actual speed is 1492/380 - excellent for this distance. Davis is still a relatively small market with SBC holding the monopoly on the CLEC side. At 29.95/month Omsoft is the same as a 1-year contract with SBC and becomes cheaper after 1 year (SBC jumps to 39.95/month after 6 months). Since I had a DSL modem, Omsoft waived the 1 year contract, otherwise the early termination fee is 29.95 (compared with 150.00 for most ISP's, this is chump change). Before I moved to Davis, I made the mistake of ordering Earthlink DSL, then immediately cancelled the order. It took 6 weeks (and 8 phone calls) for Earthlink to get their act together and disconnect me. Going with Omsoft was the best decision I've ever made. One phone call and instantly you're talking to a knowledable person who can solve any problem. During my ordeal with Earthlink, they were right there providing technical assistance. They even managed to switch me over with no downtime. This level of service is unheard of in the DSL industry and even more amazing at this price. The icing on the cake - spam dropped from 20 a day with Earthlink to zero with Omsoft. member for 19 years, 6 visits, last login: 18.8 years ago lodged 18.9 years ago
I ordered a BASIC Static IP ADSL package (384kbps to 1.5Mbps down) from Omsoft. I put the order in and several days later I was connected, super easy. However, I was a little far from the switching station and had static on my line. They bent over backwards working with SBC, and on their end to get my line up to a speed that I was satisfied with. I had to cancel my subscription after they exhausted all their options to improve my line. I heard great reviews about Omsoft from many people in Davis and I really was looking forward to being a customer. Their techsupport was always there when I called and my e-mails were literally answered a few minutes after I sent them. They also didn't charge for the brief period of service as we troubleshot my line. I highly recommend Omsoft to people who are new to computers because of their excellent customer support. I also recommend Omsoft to the most computer savvy broadband subscribers out there who are tired of being shuffled between customer reps reading off queue cards. member for 19.4 years, 2 visits, last login: 19.3 years ago lodged 19.4 years ago
We ordered 144/144 IDSL with static IP and 3 e-mail addresses last July after years of dial-up with no hope of broadband coming to our house. I live 20k feet from CO, so most xDSL is out, Cable doesn't serve our street yet and I'm into online games so Satellite is out. Install took a bit longer because they had to run new lines under our street and to our house. However Omsoft gave us updates on progress. The service has been stable with it going down one time for 3 days in December. The second call to omsoft had us back up while I was still on the phone and hasn't been down since. They even prorated our bill without us asking for it first. I was disappointed when we first got connected and saw that I cannot get lower then 100ms on any server with 65ms to the first hop. I used to get about 130ms on dial-up so it was a huge let down for gaming, but it's still more stable then dial-up since I've never lost connection. Out of all the ISP's I've ever had Omsoft has the best customer support I've ever seen. You can get someone on the phone in the first few rings without any wait. member for 20.7 years, 392 visits, last login: 14.2 years ago lodged 20.1 years ago
I ordered the 384/128 static ip about two weeks before I moved in (to get the ball rolling). Order process was quick and easy and when I moved up, I was hoping to get the modem the next day and get going. Unfortunately they ran out of the modem I needed or something, so I had to wait for more to come in. No biggie; a few days later I installed it with no problems. The speeds have been pretty good up here in north Davis and so far it's only gone down once for a minute or two. Seems pretty good to me considering all the horror stories I hear. If you're in Davis and looking for a dsl connection (as most of us students are), go for Omsoft.. Comparitively to friends with Pacbell, Omsoft comes out way ahead so far. [UPDATE 10/03] I've had DSL in the same apartment for over two years now and am still pleased with the service. Every couple months it goes down (still have a connection but can't get anywhere or ping anywhere) for a few minutes, so I can't say it's been 100% from the beginning. Besides that the uptime and speeds have been great. member for 23 years, 43 visits, last login: 13.6 years ago updated 20.4 years ago
384-1.5/256 Install was quick and easy. $59.95 per/month for one static. $3 per/month for extra IPs. I upgraded from 128k upload (when I moved) because I run several IPSEC tunnels and serve some family web content. The extra BW makes a huge difference. I've had my service for a year now and I can truly say that these guys are remarkable. As a network engineer with a more than passing interest in security, reliable service is of utmost concern to me. I need to be able to access my customer's networks at the drop of a hat and downtime isn't an option. OMSoft has earned my respect as an excellent provider. Case #1... less than 30 days after I fired up my DSL through them, I had to make a hasty move. Luckily, my new place was in their service area. I unplugged the CPE, drove it 10 miles to my new place, and called them. They were able to perform a "live cut" while I was on the phone. While I don't know if this is a service that they can provide at the drop of a hat always, I was amazed and thankful. That incident alone was worth the price of admission. If I hadn't lived it, I wouldn't believe it. Case #2: The only bump I had was about 6 months into my service. My DSL went out suddenly one afternoon. After "pinging around" from another location, I could tell that the network segment that OMSoft put me on was okay and that mine was the only line down. I called to see if they knew of a problem. During the course of checking, the person who answered the phone (on the 2nd ring) saw that my IP addresses (I have 3 statics) had been changed somehow in their system. He immediately changed them back and appologized for the inconvenience. OMSoft was able to correct there own mistake within 15 minutes of the problem being detected. This has actually happened to me with another provider and it took them 3 days to believe that IP addresses xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx-xxx were really mine and not whatever silly addresses they had on record. Kudos to OMSoft again for fixing a mistake quickly and with a smile. In my line of work I've dealt with just about every IAP in the NorCal area, including the big boys, and I'll venture a guess that for as long as OMSoft is around, they will be able to count me as a customer. member for 21.3 years, 4 visits, last login: 17.9 years ago lodged 20.7 years ago
I was a DirecTV refugee and I am on an RT, so I was restricted to using SBC (PacBell) or an SBC reseller. I narrowed my reseller choices to DSLextreme or Omsoft, and decided on Omsoft because they are located only about 50 miles away. I basically just wanted my service (1500/128 static IP) to be transferred to a new provider as seamlessly as possible, which they did. Part of the 14 days to get connected was due to waiting for DirecTV to release the line, plus I was in no hurry since I had dialup for the interim. I haven't had any problems, and the couple of questions I had were answered promptly - no waiting in queues. Either someone answers immediately, or you leave a message and someone calls back, usually within minutes. You can't get that with most ISPs these days ... member for 22.6 years, 1388 visits, last login: 9.9 years ago lodged 20.8 years ago |
