    My Other Reviews·HughesNet Satellit..
I originally purchased this aircard to replace my Hughesnet satelite ISP. I am self-employed and use the internet in my company - heavy use. I have a network with three computers and hughes is dead dog slow. You hit the enter key and take a nap. I thought the Sprint Aircard would fix my speed problem. So I purchased the modem and was going to tell hughes to take a hike and use the aircard. Well there is little support from Sprint or from the modem folks for hooking it all up and that isn't my specialty so it hasn't been done yet. I told Sprint what I was trying to do and they were real helpful to make a sale but not in support of networking. i

The Aircard itself works just fine, the speed is slower that I thoght it would be. It works in remote locations like I want it to do. Installation was pretty easy. Just load the CD and plug it in, it was really that easy for me. Well thas my story. I'm disappointed in the networking aspect and it AT7T hooks up the DSL in the next 30 days like they told me then the aircard and hughes both go back. No question!

When I first got Sprint Broadband Direct it was fairly fast and the only thing available . Over the last year it has become increasingly slower. I have been a customer for about nine years and now I am thinking about switching to dsl for more speed and it is also cheaper. If you can get anything else you will be better off getting that instead of Sprint Broadband Direct...

    @sprintbbd.net

    i agree

i've been a longtime sprint bbd customer (from when it was SpeedChoice) and last year they reconfigured some equipment on the tower end and now it's a piece of junk. when it works the speed is in the 4-6 mbps range, but often it will drop to less than 300 kbps and stay there for hours or days. they either don't know what is wrong with it, or they know and they don't want to admit it because it will get them sued. the way they behave and change their story, i'm pretty sure it's the latter.

Service the worst ever in Denver/Boulder, has been slow, under 300kbs -- thats bits !! Since SBBD has started a consolidation of channels in the Denver market, the service is awful. Customer support is powerless to help.

I asked some questions of SBBD, I'll share some of the answers

Best guess on what SBBD is doing ?? Customer support says they don't know. Who knows there is no corporate message.

Will the service ever improve ? Customer support says they don't know, but we can send out a truck/technician again. -- The technician has already been here once, the problem is in the head end.

Is SSBD shutting down service in the Denver market ? Customer support says they don't know.

Is there a minimum level of service ? Yes, 512kbs (bits), but they cannot meet their minimum level of service for 8 weeks.

Can I ask a senior manager if I should get a new service ? Customer support says they don't know, they don't have the ability to get a manager/director to call me back.

I believe SBBD is deliberately driving customers away.

If I were you, i'd just switch over to Sprint Mobile Broadband (EVDO Rev. A), or a wired connection if available. Sprint has EVDO coverage in your area. Typical speeds are in the 800 kbps - 1.2 mbps range. In more populated areas where towers are fed with more bandwidth, people see over 2 mbps.

    Re: ...GO Sprint EVDO

This is my Dad's SBBD account, I'm getting Sprint EVDO.

Just to let everyone know, SBBD has been down since December 25th. Today is the December 28th, and still no service. No one in support knows if/when it will be back.

Hopefully, after I get the EVDO service, my Dad will see the light. SBBD should pay him to be a customer !!!

RE... review of Sprint Broadband Direct

My service in Colorado Springs has been horrible for the last three months. The technician has been here and the problem is Sprint's computers. He confirmed the high uplink packet loss that I see.

For the last two weeks uplink packet loss has been 36% to 95%. Uplink speed has been less than 8 kbps for the last four days.

Today I got an email from Sprint that the problem has been fixed. My testing today shows the packet loss was 71%, uplink speed peaked at 4 kbps, dropped to 1 kbps, then failed to complete the test.

Tech Support says that uplink speed is not guaranteed. My uplink speeds are not a concern. Sprint can only check packet loss from Sprint to my computer which is low. They are not concerned about the uplink packet loss.

Service was good for many years but has been getting worse for the last six months. Three months ago email became pretty much unusable. I cannot send any email with an attachment. One email to tech support I had to send at work because it wouldn't upload through SBBD.

I also believe SBBD is deliberately driving customers away.

Re: RE... review of Sprint Broadband Direct

I finally had a technician visit and restore the quality of service for my SBBD connection. Upload speeds 46-165 kbps and download speeds 1600-3000 kbps. Packet loss is typically 1-3%. The packet loss is in the same Sprint Computer as previously. The technical Support Department doesn't have a clue on how to test or fix problem, they just do tweaks and declare the problem fixed.

Ok I dished up the 149.00 for a router that is wireless along with the evdo and monthly rate it stunk but i have it in every room on every computer (5) 3 laptops and 2 towers it is really nice to get a network secure and fairly cheap. since Att will not put a switch in and roadrunner stinks allways droping out and more per month than the sprint card. So if anybody is looking for a fairly inexpensive way to do it this is the way to go. took me all of 10 min. to make it go for all computers. hardest part was shelling the money out and getting out of my chair to get the other tower on line.

    My Other Reviews·Wi-Power
Have been a Sprint BBD customer since Dec 00. At that time they were the only broadband service of any kind available at a reasonable cost.

Tech support has been good. I've had to call them 4 or 5 times in the past 5 years, and usually they have been very helpful in working through the problems. During that time they replaced my Rc/Tx unit once. Generally the problems have been on their end, and my call to tech support alerted them to a problem they had. It was always taken care of in a timely manner.

I run VOIP over Sprint, and occassionally the upload speed will drop low enough that the person I have called gets distorted/choppy reception.

Advertised speeds are 512 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps download, up to 256 Kbps upload. Sprints SpeedTest shows my download speeds are currently around 900Kbps. A check with Wugnet.com just now showed download at 2.23 Mbps and upload at 166 Kbps.

Equipment: AMD Duron 1.8G with 512M ram, running WinME and Linux, Linksys WRT54G with QOS enabled, P8 VOIP, Sprint BBD modem and wireless xcvr with static IP.

I just received an email from Sprint saying they were now accepting new customers again. »www.sprintbroadband.com/

Generally quite pleased with their service, and highly recommend them to anyone looking for a broadband alternative.

    -------------------
11-30-07 UPDATE I have been using SBBD for about 7 years now. I was one of the first to sign up when Sprint offered the service in Tucson. It was the only alternative to dial up available in my part of town and was a huge improvement.

The big problem with SBBD is that the upload speed is clamped at about 125Kbps max. When the net is busy, it frequently drops to half of that. That is just not good enough for VOIP, and the people we are talking with complained about the audio being badly broken. This occured with both Packet8 and ViaTalk.

After putting up with this for several years, when another service became available I called it quits. 2 weeks ago I signed up with Wi-Power, a wireless service offered by TransWorldNetwork through our rural electrical company. VOIP has been rock solid, with my upload speeds showing a solid 512Kbps++.

Sprints tech service told me that Sprint does not intend to ever upgrade the system over what it is now, but will continue to offer the service to current customers. It will eventually be discontinued as customers move over to EVDO (Sprint Mobile Broadband) or other services.

SBD used to be faster than our local cable company on down loads, and I never got above 125 k on up loads. I have been with them for seven years, and the last two have left me with an empty feeling. Now, it is hit or miss, they give me excuses and no solutions. Some days it runs ok, some days it runs as slow as my first modem of 28.8 kb and AOL. I am not getting value for my money, so I must go with another ISP. I am editing this, I have been reading some of the other reviews, and they all seem to agree with mine, even though I have been with this forum for a short time.

This is my first wireless device.

After a 1 hour wait I finally got hold of Sprint tech support. The tech did not know that there was a password security lock on the AC595U -- neither did her boss. They were polite and tried to help -- they just did not have the product knowledge. You'd better contact the manufacturer, Sierra Wireless if you have technical questions. For billing/account questions You'll contact India.

A WiMax upgrade early next year means you will want to buy a faster aircard. Speeds fluctuate greatly and constantly. Best speeds are after 1AM. I can get you a good deal on NoDoze.

Their software updates/firmware flash seemed to knock down my hard earned connection speeds. That's when I returned the 595U for a replacement.

If you can live with that than be sure to ask for the corporate discount [up to 25%/month depending upon the company for which you work] when you sign your 24 month contract.

I'd like to ditch before 30 days are up, but I REALLY need wireless. I'm looking... Millenicom uses the very same Sprint network for a flat $50/month. I've heard they have better tech support than Sprint (if you need it). Their 595U card is $30 cheaper without having to endure a rebate. Millenicom offers NO corporate discounts.

I TCP tuned constantly with DR. TCP and TCP Optimizer. I realize the fruits of my labors only late at night. Hair turned gray, lost weight, got varicose veins from contantly sitting at the confuser to try different TCP tunings.

They claim 350-700Kbits/sec DOWN and you'll get that or pretty darn close to it all the time. You will not lose your connection - you may lose your patience. Guess is they just need more towers. -- HOT TIP -- I bought a USB cable extender to locate the 595U at a window and got down to a -57dbm. [I'm fairly close to the Fallbrook, CA tower] One downloaded Sprint update included an update for the 595U firmware. I had better speeds before the firmware changed. Give Sprint credit they replaced my the AC595 with a new one. I'm tuning all over again cause I lost the old settings. Tough thing about the tuning is that the constant speed fluctations make changing the settings seem vague. Sprint just needs more towers or fewer users. 4PM is the worst time. It's a lot like driving on the 405 -- stop and go. Well now... remember...it's only wireless not a T1.

At night your connection will top 1000. During the daytime your blood pressure will reach the same number. If you are up when it's dark outside Sprint yields higher bandwidth. Contact me I'll give you a 24 month contract on NoDoze and a great deal on an LED flashlight.

    My Other Reviews·Millenicom
SORRY THIS WAS POSTED IN THE WRONG SECTION, should be in Sprints Mobile

I just happened to find the wireless broadband while paying my nextel bill. I have been on dial up for 14 yrs with a break inbetween to try DirecWay which was a total joke so I went back to dial up until Aug 21st 2007

Nextel site doesnt advertize it at all. You basically have to find it on your own. Once found, I started doing research to see exactly what was needed and the connection speeds ect. I called Sprint to ask and since I have a nextel phone number they automatically sent me to Nextel tech support. Nextel knows nothing about Sprints Wireless. Needless to say it took me over 3 hours to finally gets a tech on the phone that could answer my questions. He was pretty knowledgable.

I wanted the Novatel U720 but after trying many times online to purchase and it just took me in circles, I called sales. I was informed that they do not offer the Novatel U720 anymore and I would have to purchase Sierra 595U. Order was place at 3:30pm they shipped it overnight mail and was here the next day at 1:30pm

Charging the battery for 2 hours prior to activating was annoying........all the online forums say to use a powered USB but it clearly states in the manual NOT to plug the 595U into one. I crabbed so much, the sales person gave me another $50 off my bill plus the $50 rebate, so I only paid $29.99 for the Sierra 595U. That helped me make my choice easier lol

Installing the software was a piece of cake, but calling to activate was another Sprint/Nextel phone BOT nightmare. I was on hold for almost 45 mins. Activation took aprox 5 mins. Then a box pops up and say, OH BOY NOW WAIT ANOTHER 2-4 hours before you will be on the network. After about an hour I hit the go button, It connected then disconnected in about 2 mins. I reconnected again and its been online for a good part of each day.

Day 3 .........Red battery light has came on as soon as I connected. Went off after about an hour. Then back on again about 2 hours later. So I plugged it into a powered USB hub. Red light has now gone off. Hopefully that will stop the issue.

The coverage area around me is Rev A my connection speeds are pretty good. But they seem to be much better in the morning/afternoon (800-1048K) than in the evening. (600-800K tops)

I would say if you want something more than dial up, even though its a bit pricey, Go for it. ...I'll NEVER go back to dial up!

    ?

Huh? This isn't Sprint Broadband Direct if you're using a Sierra 595U or Novatel U720. Those are both EVDO Rev A modems, which is Sprint Mobile Broadband, not Sprint Broadband Direct. Sprint Mobile Broadband is heavily advertised, both on the Internet and on TV. I think you're a little confused. This review should go under Sprint Mobile Broadband.

I must have clicked on the wrong link when writing the review. Yes its mobile broadband. And if you notice in doing the review, we are in a very rural area. I have never seen a Sprint commercial on TV or in the local news papers.

You honestly think I would have stayed on dial up?

Also I was a Nextel customer using Nextel site to pay my cell bill. It wasn't until about a month ago that the Nextel site is now redirected to Sprint.

SO confused, No......Human error. Yes. LOL

Oh I wasnt offended, I was being a smartie pants. But seriously no commericals here for Sprint broadband in the least.....

Just about everyone in my area has Nextel phones and I wonder how many now are going to jump on the Sprint Mobile because they can see its available on the Sprint site. Nextel sure had nothing about it.

Im just glad I found it, but wish I would of when it came out. Dial-Up was horrible I was lucky to get 4Kb/s download usually was 3Kb/s. Im never going back. I'll keep this until cable comes in.....but I doubt that will ever happen.

i have had this service for all most 24 months, and i guess from a comment from a service rep that after the contract is expired they charge for service calls and equipment???

i tried to get dsl, i am MILES away from the nearest POP, cable co is 923 feet away but not enough people live down my road (must be 25 homes in 1/4 mile area) for them to have to bring the cable the rest of the way. and sat service is just way to much cost up front.

speeds vary with the time of day and usage, i have seen it as fast as 6000k(600 meg cd iso in 10 minutes) and as slow as 1000k downloads and 300k capped upload speed.

local installer is a great person, if he needs to come out its fixed right the first time, when i first started service it was some times a week before a tech was avalible as they ran him from dallas up to OKC one day a week, but now we have one tech living here and generally next day service is norm now.

when i call tech support i for the most part i am unimpressed, most of those i have spoken to on the phone lack "tech savy" and i get the feeling i know more about there system than they do, since there are no local offices here they dont seem to know about outages until the day after they occur.

bottom line they are my only real choice still, as the only wireless broadband provider in town and no other wired choices available.
