I spent 9 weeks from initial request, through the install, trouble shooting, giving up, and removing the service.
I ordered an IDSLR, 768/384, for 49.95/month, static IP.
They shipped the modem to the wrong person, signature required to a home address where no one would ever be during delivery hours. It took us four days for finally make arrangements and go pick it up. Very annoying. They never told me in advance that they were shipping something or gave me an option to ship it elsewhere.
I had to call in to tech support to get it working, then suffered severe packet loss. There was much finger pointing between Rhythms, Verizon and Galaxy. I had long protracted discussions with all of them which even included two truck rolls by the TelCo, unanswered messages to the manager in charge of things at Galaxy and many hours on an upper level tech support with Rhythms. I spent three weeks trying to get things working, including rewiring my home phone lines with Cat5 wiring. Nothing. It never got fixed, then they finally decided to drop me as a customer because it was too much hassle to keep working on it. It took another 3+ weeks to get the line removed at the CO.
Once my line was freed up, I called SpeakEasy and got it installed and working in 18 days. Initially there was the same packet loss as with Galaxy, but after getting Covad involved they figured out the problem and it was easily resolved.
SpeakEasy costs me twice as much as Galaxy, but it's worth every penny to not have to deal with the hassle of never having a working DSL line.
Brokk...
PS. I've now received a bill from FedEX because the account number I was given to mail the hardware back was invalid. So now they want me to pay $42.62 for shipping my DSL modem back as I was instructed to.

I've been a GalaxyDSL customer for the past few months.. ever since the NorthPoint fiasco. Galaxy's technical support is excellent. You get right through to a knowledgable technician- no ridiculously long hold queues, no frustration dealing with entry-level techs who get confused when they discover you're not running windows. If you want a DSL provider that has great technical support, they are a good choice.

"This is some mighty fine DSL. Sure beats that Verizon Offline stuff."
"some poopy head at Rhythms forgot to finish my line setup. But, a great guy named Peter from Galaxy got it up the same day!"

GalaxyDSL is a great service run by very friendly and kind people. I'm in a suburb outside of Boston, tech support and customer support was excellent, little waiting especially for tech supp. Installation process faster than any other DSL service I've had before.
I have to thank personally some day how great this one person from tech support was and still is. His name is Peter. I forgot his last name, but he was effortful and determined to help me get my DSL working. Here's the little tale:
Installation took a little longer than I'd liked, so I signed up for a free month (which turned out to be 3 months, not just 1 I found out after calling to cancel!) of MSN My modem was backordered, but it came yesterday (June 8th, a Friday. I expected it the following week.) Even UPS arrived early. I set up my DSL modem, plugged in the filters... waited like a silly boy on Christmas morning... *stared at the lights on the modem* c'mon c'mon, I thought, and the DSL light was red. :-( I tried it on my other phone line. Same thing.
I called Galaxy's (wonderful to say the least) tech support. I was answered within I dunno 5 minutes max, it felt quicker than that! The notable Peter answered, and walked me through a few things on the modem just to double check. I asked him which phone line it was installed on. I requested the DSL installed on line 1, but they had it on line 2 :-\ hmmm so he said he would check with Rhythms for me.
He did! Very quickly too! Within the next half hour or maybe 45 minutes (I don't know I was watching TV, enjoying a nice day off) he called me back with a Rhythms dude on the phone. I didn't catch his name but he was a wonderful help too. He did a few tests, and my DSL was working, with thanks especially to Peter, whom without this would not have happened!
GalaxyDSL is a great service, and I highly recommend it to anyone who prefers speed over PPPoe (the kind you have to log on to).
A silly note: I tried signing up for Verizon DSL before Galaxy. Dsl wasnt available in my area according to their website. (I had DSL for a YEAR before from Northpoint) I laughed it off, ordered Galaxy. The day my line was approved, for fun, I checked that same Verizon website... "Congratulations! DSL is available in your area!" I figure, they're too lazy to do real tests themselves :-P
Quality stuff B-)
Galaxy is a great service. A very satisfied, nah, it's more like wow-it's-good-to-have-DSL-again feeling customer (friend) ,
Curtis

Massachussetts Residents:
Do NOT use GalaxyDSL. This ISP will unplug you and charge you $450. Here is how:
I had their service with them for less than a month. One day, my DSL connection went down. I was calling everyday to tech support and there were not helpful. Here is what I heard from them: it was a Rythms connection problem the CO had a short circuit Verizon unplugged the DSL line I can ping your router (although my DSL modem did not have an IP and second, the connection was down) ...
Anyway, after 2 weeks of downtime, GalaxyDSL disconnected my line and charged me $450 without my approval. I called David (the Manager) and asked some explainations. He mentioned that it was Verizon that unplugged my DSL line. They said that I must deal with Verizon directly. Surprisingly, I never dealt or had business with VerizonDSL. After calling Verizon, they mentioned that GalaxyDSL wanted to get out of the business with me and found some excuses to point fingers at other providers.
We are currently considering a Class Action Lawsuit againt GalaxyDSL. ...

I wanted to express my disatisfaction with GalaxyDSL located in Newton, MA. due to a long downtime and lack of professional management. I had the service for less than a month now. My DSL connection is down for almost 10 days and GalaxyDSL keeps stating that the connection should be back online in the next few days. I've been calling them every day for an update. First, they said that it was my PC config, then they blamed Rythms, next it's Verizon... Come on, who am I dealing with here??? When it came to GalaxyDSL management (Dave), this is the worth customer relation I ever had. I asked for a cancellation and they want to charge me $450. I understand that they can charge me $450 if my connection was fine, but they still want to charge me even my connection is down for about 10 days. No matter if people are down or up, they will still get your money. Additional note. He (the manager) mentioned to transfer to a business line DSL instead of residential since I used it for both. I told him that I didn't want to use a business line to cruise the internet and on top of that, what guarantee do I have if the same connection problem occurs (as I have now). He did not answer my question on this one. Well, I strongly do not recommend to go with GalaxyDSL for the simple reason that the cancellation fee is very high.

I placed the order on Friday 4/20/01 and had my connection on Monday 5/7/01, in 17 days.(I was told, it will take 3 to 4 weeks)
I never had to wait for more than 2 minutes on the phone for either Sales, Customer Service or Technical Support. They are extremely friendly, courteous and knowledgeable.
The instructions on the modem installation were very straight forward and it took only 15 minutes for me to install and configure my IP address.
When I did the speed test my download speed was about 660k and upload speed was about 330k.
My hats off to Galaxy Team and I hope they will maintain this for ever.

They claimed they would have me up and running in 3-4 weeks. I was up in 13 days! My Connection speed is in the promised range, I'm currently getting between 700-750 download and 300-350 upload. After losing my connection because of NorthPoint, Telocity didn't communicate anything with me and left me in the dark. I turned to GalaxyDSL as a frustrated DSL customer, and they have more then delivered.

Gentlepeople: I want to say thank you....I have been a customer of Galaxy for several years...happily so....last year I switched to GalaxyDSL.....an now I am more than a satisfied customer. Not only is the service quite good and quite professional but I find that the GalaxyDSL staff are willing to go far beyond what is expected and to walk a customer through and during installation and problem solving. I would be remiss if I didn't single out Peter Sippel who has "held my hand" on more than once occasion and calmed my fears and solved my problems..GalaxyDSL has made me feel part of their family.....I am a happy camper....keep it up.
