    Update #6 - 3/2006

OK - So the US gets civilized nation speeds finally.... Not so fast, pardner. One little line upgrade, ostensibly to 6Mbps - mishandled and gone wrng in every way possible:

First, Cyberonic sends out the new modem (for the line upgrade, apparently) without notifying, even by email, that theree will be an outage.

Then, when the line has been down for a day, the modem arrives - cost? Countless lost emails and at least an hour sending out emails & calling tewch support trying to get through.

Then, when the modem arrives & Covad handles the install, everything is rosy - until I run a speed test & see that we're at the old speed. My mistake to bring this up because:

then they "upgrade" my line - at 4.Mbps down, I am impressed. But everything is funky - I can't even log on to hotmail or open table withoyt getting timed out... Huh? So I run a speed test. 4.5Mbps down, 8kbps up - 8kbps = about 1/7th the speed of dialup. So I call Covad again & they say they can't doa thing unless Cyberonic calls them. So I start leaving Cyberonic messages on their phone (they don't pick up tech suppport, remember?) and emailing. Three days later I get this brilliant answer back - send us the results of your speed test. Now, I ask you - How the heck am I supposed to do that if I can't use email? - And this all is just to get them to open a trouble-ticket with

    Covad....

Finally today - NINE DAYS after I went down, I got ahold of a responsible sounding person at Cyberonic, by calling the Sales department. OK - so I am still down, but at least it will be interesting to see if they can get the problem fixed before a competent ISP installs a line I can use in my house.

Update #5 - After the final chapter.... 3/5/2003

Well, it seems things are improving at Cyberonic - I called support again today (they will never answer an email, I think...) and got through in real time, plus I got a guy who seemed a little green but very responsible and responsive. He heard me out and tried to find solutions to the problems. Their mail server is being used to relay viruses & they know it & are working on the problem accounts. - This is hardly a realistic solutioon from an infrastructure perspective (why the hell don't they have virus filters on their firewalls? They can buy a SonicWall Pro for what? $1500 & be done with the problem?) but the fact that they are actually doing somethign about the problem is brand new. And as for my new speed problem, I got an annoying tech support red tape shower (Q - do you have any 900MHz phones on this line? A - Yes, just like I have or 5 years and had when I was getting 4x the upload speed I am getting now, 2 weeks ago. Q - OK, diconnect them & call us tomorrow if the problem persists.)

OK - That's a bit foolish given the info, but at least I expect to call them tomorrow, repeat the info I gave them today on the phone and literally 15 times over again on email, and start getting somewhere with the speed issue... BIG improvement over 2 weeks ago.

I upgrade them from the worst ISP ever to "needs improvement"...

    Update #4 - the final chapter - 2/28/2003

Believe it or not - 2 open issues for a month, 15 emails to support in the last 24 hours (useless to try to get through on the phon) and no reply. Fortunately, reading another bad review of this little disaster, I found DNSes that work. Needless to say, they don't belong to Cyberonic. Now everything looks much rosier, because I am using the line Cyberonic brokered, and their gateway, but running my own mail server and using a 3rd party's DNSs....

    Update #3 - 2/27/2003

OK - Another workday lost... Reading another damnig review of Cybermoronic, I found a user who discovered he could use SBC's DNS servers - which actually work! - Thank God - I am sort of back online. Again - if it's not too late - run as far as you can from these people - they are as irresponsible as any ISP I have ever seen. No technical support, no follow-through no professionals, and no service - ugly embarassment, really.

    Update #2 - 2/27/2003

Well, I ran some speed tests(took 3 tries with the failing connection) and not only is the connection garbage and their support non-existent, but the speed is down to under 1/3 the advertised now too (for upload), so the one argument for maybe getting them is slowly slipping away - I smell crash & burn...

    Update 2/27/2003

Well, it's been 2 months since I signed the contract andover 1 since I got "connected"... I have only one e-mail account from them (though the contract says 5) which works maybe one time in 10, and have been waiting 15 days for a call-back on my connectivity problem - either the DNS servers or the gateway stop talking for a couple of minutes out of every 15 or so.

This is the worst ISP I have ever dealt with, and they seem in no rush to fix much of anything. "Fools rush in"...

    //

Their 18-month $39 1500/768 Static IP ADSL deal was too good to pass up, so I took it. Their sales are clearly overwhelmed by the DirecTV windfall, because I had to initiate every contact myself, push on the contract, call and explicitly ask for IPS for me, the gateway, the DNS, etc. Though the contract includes 5 mail boxes, I called many times, holding for as long as 1:20 to get through each time, and every time my acounts were set up, they never worked, and had disappeared by the time I called again. i.e. Cyberonic is not honoring their contract, and they do not return e-mails or phone calls, though they often say they will. 1 month later, I set up my own e-mail server to work around their problem.

Bottom line - beleaguered and under-trained support staff coupled with very marginal documentation on their systems means a very rough ride. The DNS serves choke for 1 to 2 minutes at a time everty 30 or so. But the speed is lovely.

If their offer sounds too good to be true, it is. But what you manage to get out of it is still good value for the money.

Thinking of using Cyberonic? I just canceled them after trying to upgrade to their advertised 6.0 down speeds. Why you ask?

    THE BAD:
    1. after signing up for the upgrade, i did not recieve notice of the switch over date.
    2. one evening my dsl went down, due to the planed upgrade but I was unaware of it.
    3. multiple attempts to contact tech support after new modem arrived.
    4. so-so tech support.
    5. made a mistake configuing the router's subnet address and from there on, I could not access the config page anymore. Called tech support and they said they can try to reconfig, but the modem they sent me blocks those ports so the couldn't do squat! Told me a techician had to come on-site... wtf.
    6. too costly for DSL, 46 bucks for 6 down.

    THE GOOD:
    1. After years with them, they were responsive to emails and phone support.
    2. No downtime.
    3. Static IP

    Bottome line:
Go with someone else to get more bang for your buck. I switched to SBC Yahoo for 17.99/mo for 12 months. 3.0 down and 400 up.

    PREVIOUS POST ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------
I've got dial-up speeds for the past month from cyberonic.
I'm in San Francisco and Cyberonic says MCI is doing some hardware upgrades. So when the heck will it be done! Who's to blame.. Cyberonic or MCI?
Is anyone else getting messed up speeds? I signed 18 month contract so I'm stuck. I was at least told by a Cyberonic support dude I would recieve some type of credit for during the upgrade period. I'll leave my ratings the same but I just want my sweet speed back!!!!!!! Here's the speed test from a few mins ago:

    2003-05-06 02:59:08 EST: 140 / 78
Your download speed : 140439 bps, or 140 kbps.
    A 17.1 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 78003 bps, or 78 kbps.

Compare that to my previous speeds and Yikes.
Please let me know if you are gettin messed up speeds and in SF so I know I'm not alone and we can create a larger complaint to Cyberonic if this goes on for TOO LONG.

    OLD REVIEW BELOW----------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----
Ok lets keep it short and to the point:

Saw high stars on dslreports bout' cyberonic. Didn't want pac-hell & dynamic IP.
Poll showed most people were going with small comapny called cyberonic.
Cyberonics' Web site was ugly and not informative. Bud decided to go with the the low cost DSL.

01/01/03 Called to order, Faxed contract for 18months
    01/12/03 Modem came
01/21/03 DTV got disconnected, cyberonic told me this would be the hotswap date but no link on CYB modem.
After that I called almost everyday for 1 HOUR holds and was told to call back to check.
So I just waited and waited till one morning 2/01/03, I woke up to see a link light on the modem.

2/02/03 Called to set my modem to Bridge mode. Hung up, bridge mode doesn't work. Tech dude probably did something wrong.
2/03/03 Called again said, I got no link light and bridge mode ain't working.
He rebooted and set to bridge mode and it worked.

So I'm a happy camper, it was worth the wait and you can't blame them for being overloaded with ex-DTV people. Hope they stick around cuz I paid 18 months of DSL.

28 February 2006 - It been 2 years since I last updated this. That's because I had so little in the way of problems that I didn't need to change my review. However everything has changed.

Cyberonic sent out postcards at the beginning of the year talking about "network upgrades". What they should have said was that they were getting rid of the nice bridged uunet connections and going with PPPoE Covad connections. So my latency has been shot all to hell. I'm also on the west coast, and their tech support lines close at 9PM PST.

I always liked the bandwidth, the latency, the static IP. Little in the way of support and now an overpriced connection = time to switch connections. I'm going with sonic.net.
    ************************************************************************
01 March 2004 - Well it's been over a year now. I've had so little problems, it's almost something I would consider utility grade service. I can't tell you the lase time I had to call cyberonic tech support, or actually call cyberonic at all. I come home from work, turn on the computer(s), and I'm on the internet. I can count on one hand the outages I have had, and most consist of less than 5 minutes.

I feel sorry for anybody else that has had poor service with ANY service provider. I feel like I hit the lottery.
    ************************************************************************
16 August 2003 - Up 7 months now, thought I might update the review. In a nutshell: I HAVE HAD ZERO problems. I know some of you have had a mixed bag of problems, but my service is great. Maybe it's due to the fact that I can fix most of my problems myself. I have had little or no need to contact tech support or billing, so I don't see these as impediments. The times I have had to call them I have had solid service from competent people.

My speed tests are consistantly in the 1300/620 range, and the MOHAA gaming servers I play on I always have a ping in the 30-50ms range. Oh yeah, for all you people on cable with download limitations: I can download as much as I want, for as long as I want, and NEVER get a snail mail letter saying I am over my limit. I have done multiple full ftp RedHat Linux installs (2GB+ in RPM's) without ever being questioned.
    ************************************************************************
31 March 2003 - 2+ full months of service, and I could not be happier. My speed checks consistently run 1290/630 on Windows, 1300/650 on the Linux box. I also noticed that they finally billed my credit card for the first months server and installation fee.

Best part of all of this is that I can run WHATEVER I dam well please on my connection. They don't restrict me at all.
    ************************************************************************
13 Feb 2003 - Finally got the Linksys router that I purchased off ebay today. Before setting up the router, called Cyberonic support number. Got through to Jack, who put me on hold for 2 minutes. I guess Frank is broken, 'cause I was only getting snippets of the usual songs.

When Jack got back on the line, I told him I wanted to put my cisco 678 into bridge mode. Note: I mentioned my brand of modem so I could try to avoid any problems. Jack gave me the relevant information, and then sad Ken would update it in 10 minutes. It didn't take that long. I hung up the phone and watched as the WAN activity light blinked furiously. After being impatient for 2 minutes, I re-configured my PC and rebooted. Everything worked!.

I then set up the new router, plugged in the information, and I have control of my LAN. Lessons learned so far with Cyberonic:

    1) Call on the off hours - Can't tell you how much easier it is to get a hold of them later in the evening. I've never waited more than 5 minutes on hold IF I called later than 7:00 PM PST (10:00PM for you eastern folks).

    2) Don't use their default DNS - Use some of the other uunet DNS (198.6.1.146, 198.6.1.3 for those of us on the west coast), or just find one closer. You will be glad.

    3) Don't rely on their email - The email has gotten better, but I'm still not convinced that it will ever be perfect. I plan on running my own email and web servers, now that I have things under my control. If you don't fell like doing that, use another service.

    ************************************************************************

31 Jan 2003 - I took the suggestion of other people, and wrote support@cyberonic.com asking them to add my IP to the SMTP server. Piece of cake. Took all of one day to get my email up so I can send email. Also, whatever they did in the last two days witht he email server, it works ALOT faster now.

My speed tests have been consistently in the 1290/560 range. I've tried some tweeks, but it hasn't gotten much better than the above. Can't complain.

    ************************************************************************

28 Jan 2003 - So far, so good. I haven't called to put my Cisco into bridge mode yet, as I'm still trying to get a router (on ebay no less). In the mean time, NAT mode seems to be working fine. I only have the two computers right now, but will have web and email servers up and running once I get another router going.

One of the things that really got under my nerves was the default DNS search order that Cyberonic setup. The primary DNS had a 100ms ping and took 23 hops to get to. It is located on the eastcoast. The secondary DNS had 13 hops and a 20ms ping. I'm not sure where it is located, but I don't really care now. Why did they set me up with a primary DNS that is located on the eastcoast? I live in California. You would think that they could do a little better on the initial configuration. I did switch that, and things seem to work much better.

If you are thinking about using Cyberonic for email, I have one word for you: DON'T. The webmail interface is slow, the pop server is even slower, and I have yet to get them to add my IP to their SMTP setup. At this point, I don't even really care, because I have a couple of other alternatives (work email, hotmail account, etc.)

    ************************************************************************

22 Jan 2003 - After some late night tweaking, I've been able to get my upload speed to around 644. Download speed didn't change, so that's good. All I need now is to get the email relaying problem fixed. At this stage of the game, I can say I am a happy camper.

    ************************************************************************

21 Jan 2003 - Houston, we have lift off. Got home from work, turned on the computer and the line was up and running. An initial speed test has me at 1294/557. I'm currently about 8k from the CO (according to Cyberonic), and live in an area that has 30+ year old wiring. It's a good thing that my home office is close to the NID. I ran a 1 foot Cat5e extension from the NID to a new wall plate, so I'm hopefull that it helps. Pings to broadband reports are like this:

    C:\WINDOWS>ping broadbandreports.com

Pinging broadbandreports.com [209.123.109.175] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 209.123.109.175: bytes=32 time=97ms TTL=47
    Reply from 209.123.109.175: bytes=32 time=97ms TTL=47
    Reply from 209.123.109.175: bytes=32 time=103ms TTL=47
    Reply from 209.123.109.175: bytes=32 time=101ms TTL=47

    Ping statistics for 209.123.109.175:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 97ms, Maximum = 103ms, Average = 99ms

I guess that the pings seem kinda high, but that's probably due to the unreal pings I have at work. Maybe I can run some tweaking tools and get even better performance.

    *************************************************************************

19 Jan 2003 - After talking to Cyberonic two days ago, I finally got a service start date. Well, it's a service "we belive it is supposed to" start date of the 21st or the 22nd. That's more info than they have had in a while.

    *************************************************************************

15 Jan 2003 - Doh!! Didn't realize that the yellow ethernet cable that came with the router was a crossover cable. Hooked up that bad-boy to the uplink port on my Linksys switch and I have the LAN portion of the router working. Now if I can just get my line provisioned, I will be even happier.

    *************************************************************************

14 Jan 2003 - Received my Cisco 678 Router yesterday. Hooked everything up, and got nothing but a red power light. Double and triple checked everything and called Cyberonic for installation. They took my number and called me back within the hour. I was told that I received my equipment early, and that my line should be provisioned within the next week and a half. The install process is now officially a pain in the ass.

    *************************************************************************

09 Jan 2003 - Just got off the phone with Cyberonic. They said the loop testing will be done today, and I should recieve the router within a week. Note to all those people who are having problems: I don't understand. I called them in the middle of the day (Noon east coast time, 9:00 AM here in California), and they picked up on the 4th ring. I was on hold all of 2 minutes. The person who answered the phone was courteous, and quickly gave me the status of my order.

I also told the customer service rep that I heard that they are REALLY busy right now. He said that because of DirectTV DSL and two other companies (sorry, I didn't get the company names) going down, they are completly swamped.

    *************************************************************************

03 Jan 2003 - Well I finally did it. After a year of reviewing various services, finding room in the monthy budget, and begging to the boss (my lovely wife), I'm finally getting DSL. I almost went with DSL Extreme, until I started reading the reviews about Cyberonic. I think my favorite quote in any review was "brutal efficiency for experts". I like the fact that the Cyberonic seems to embody the "Just give me the dam bandwidth" method of broadband. No PPPoE, fancy browsers, server restrictions, or any other cr*p like that. Let's hope that I have the same attitude in a couple of months...

I'm nearing my 2nd anniversary with Cyberonic 1.5/768 DSL. My service has been very good during the last year with very few outages and few problems. My only desire is for higher upload and download speed. I have contacted Cyberonic a few times and their suggestion was to switch to Cyberonic/Covad 6.0megs service for higher speed. I like the Cyberonic MCI backbone because I get one true public static IP address and it’s been working fine. I am averaging 1.4 megs down and 490k up test using speed.cyberonic.com. I called today to ask for the possibility of getting more static IP addresses and the salesperson suggested putting up a review of my experience here at broadband reports.com. So here I am. So all in all im happy!

I was real excited when I saw the ad that I could have Cyberonic Dryline for $49 a month. Works as advertised.

I had Verizon DSL for $29 a month, got my self install kit and found out my bill was actually going to be $34 a month, less than a few months into my service, they begin raising my monthly bill with add on charges close to $40 a month. Big rip off.

I switched to Cyberonic, cancelled my Verizon DSL and Verizon land line. I am paying $49 per month, no additional fees or gimmick. Sales person was great and gave me all the detail I needed for a smooth transition. I waited for the Cyberonic/Covad tech to install the line and then got Packet8 VOIP working.

    Very happy with Cyberonic DSL..

After 5 years with Cyberonic, I have had my ups and downs. I originally signed up for Cyberonic/Covad dryline and then moved to Cyberonic/MCI 1.5megs/768kbs. The service worked well most of the time. About a year ago, the DSL line went down for a couple days, a few times, and I called support people who were very helpful to take care of the problem.

I need fast upload speed with non PPPOE Static IP connection, and that’s what Cyberonic offers. I know other companies offer $14.99 or $19.99 out there but they don’t offer 768k upload. Some people think upload speed doesn’t matter, but if you are sending and receiving graphic files or playing games that’s all matter. It doesn’t matter if your down load is 6 or 8 megs if your upload is low. So, Cyberonic/MCI is definitely worth it. Service has been great. Had a minor bug or two installing a wireless router, but the forums here were great and got me straightened out in no time.

The service is still working quite well, but almost all other ISP's have upgraded speeds and/or lowered prices in the past few years. Cyberonic (MCI) has done neither, so they really aren't competative anymore. Their e-mail service is also worthless. Others have noted how outgoing e-mail is blocked by anti-spam organizations. Incoming mail should be blocked also. In my account, about 99+ percent is SPAM, usually for porn, drugs, etc. Virtually all of the e-mail doesn't even have my account name in the header. It appears that they set up your e-mail account in "catch all" mode. Cyberonic seems to be unwilling or incapable of doing anything about this problem, even though numerous clients complain about it. I've switched my e-mail service to another provider and just go to Cyberonic WebMail every so often to clear the trash off of their server without reading it.

Don't bother trying to communicate with them via e-mail. They don't answer, but that may be because their inboxes are also full of SPAM.

I ordered service on January 5, 2003, and set up an e-mail account at that time. I did not have to go through the "fax back a signed contract" routine. My new e-mail address (for incoming) and web hosting services worked later on that day. I still used Directv for outbound e-mail.

About 5 days later, I sent an e-mail inquiring about the status of my order, and received a reply that it was in progress with no concerns. That was the last e-mail that I received a response to.

On January 23, my DSL service from Directv went down. That is when the "hot swap" took place. However, I hadn't received any hardware yet, so I was down to using NetZero dial up service.

On January 24, I called Cyberonic to find our the status of my order. After my session with Frank Sinatra, I was told that my cutover was indeed yesterday, and was given a UPS tracking number. Fortunately, UPS did deliver that morning. Otherwise, I would have been down at least 3 more days since UPS doesn't work on weekends.

I hooked up my equipment as per the instructions in the box, and did get a "link" with the network. Since I have a wireless network in my house, I wanted to have their router switched to bridging mode and get my static addresses. I called Cyberonic and "Frank" eventually transferred me to a tech. He gave me my IP address, Subnet mask, Gateway address, and DNS addresses and said he would have me switched over within a half hour. A few minutes later, I could see he was communicating with the Efficient router by observing the WAN lamp and eventual reboot procedure.

I then configured my home networks D-link DI-701 Gateway using the addresses that I had been given. I also used the crossover cable between the Efficient router and my D-link Gateway as the "in box instructions" and comments here on DSL Reports led me to believe I should do. Nothing worked. I figured the changes might still be in progress, so I waited about 6 hours and nothing had changed. I called Cyberonic again, and the tech that evening told me that my IP address and Gateway address were wrong. I tried the new addresses, and it still didn't work. I then tried the straight cable vice crossover cable between routers, and it worked.

At that point, incoming mail worked, but outgoing mail would not. Anything sent to someone else was rejected as a case of "relaying". I called again, and told them about the problem. The tech asked me what I was using for outgoing mail server address, and told me it should be smtp.cyberonic.com even though their web site says mail.cyberonic.com He said to try that, and if it didn't work, send an e-mail to support (not easy to do if outgoing e-mail doesn't work!) On Sunday, I called again and told the eventual tech that I felt that I hadn't been set up properly in the SMTP data base. He agreed, and said their webmaster was out (watching the Super Bowl?) and would have me set up within 12 hours.

On Monday morning, mail did indeed work, both inbound and outbound. Speeds were very good, especially uploads. My speed test today was 1283 down and 614 up, which is just about average for what I have been getting. However, their DNS servers and Mail servers seem to be grossly overloaded and respond so slowly at times that my browser or mail client time out.

Since Cyberonic has picked up so many new customers, they need to rapidly improve their server situation, and customer support system. They should develop a corporate web site like DTV had which could give you status of your order, network status, etc. Right now, most of their procedures are not even "low tech" and this leads to maximum frustration for their customers.

I have had Cyberonic DSL for time. When I called today, the Cyberonic rep asked me to write a quick review of their service. So here I am.

I am subscribing 1.5/768 MCI DSL + 1 static IP. Wish it was faster but it's still broadband. I like the 768k upload. I’m very pleased and recommend this service to any of my friends. I have set up numerous friends in the last few months alone.

I was one of original in Haxton list who signed up when Directv belly up. Thanks to Haxton we got a good deal at that time. The only complaint, I want faster speed. 1.5kbs download is not enough.

I called Cyberonic a few times but kept telling me that they have no control over what MCI provides. Well, I dinged the value category a notch because of the speed vs value. The connection is neither ppoe nor ppoa, which what I like. I also run only Linux at home so it works fine.

Overall, I'm still extremely happy with the service from Cyberonic and feel that it is worth every penny.

I have had Cyberonic/Covad Telesoho Dryline service since July. I chose Cyberonic because they have a real good record of service here at broadbandreports.com. I checked »Cyberonic and seemed pretty good. So after hearing good things on here, I signed up for Cyberonic. The loop delivered and in-service in one week, which was great. The Covad technician was very prompt and friendly. He used the existing line that I wasn’t using so I didn’t need to put in and extra jack. The tech support at Cyberonic is great! I have great luck at reaching very competent people, especially during weekends when I am home all day. And the price I pay is great, $49 per month for Covad dryline and $99 activation, free usage of a router, 1 Static IP address. That’s a real good deal. Cyberonic is by far and away the best ISP I've ever used. I will report any significant changes

Extremely and entirely disappointed with their service. Though they provide competitive prices - their speeds don't walk the talk and their tech support is completely uninterested in helping. I was a subscriber of their 1.5/768 plan for ~6 months, and though the first month was phenomenal (my speeds were even greater than expected), ~30 days into my service speeds suddenly dropped (in half) and all I was told from tech help was that I was too far from their base (whereas I was originally told I was "well within the boundary"). As a final kick in the rear, when I called to cancel, I was told I was responsible for the shipping costs of returning the modem. If there was anything positive about the experience, it was that I didn't need to sign a contract and was able to back out without penalty. I won't use them again.
