I've had service through shore.net (now Primus) for so many years
I'm not even sure how long it's been (1994?).

I got Northpoint DSL in 1999. When Northpoint went belly-up in 2001, Primus
scrambled to get me cut over to Covad ASAP, and I was only down for
about a week. The original contract had a 60-day disconnect notification
clause. In the scramble to cut-over, I failed to notice that the new service
wasn't just a one-year minimum, it was self-renewing for 12-month
intervals unless cancelled in advance of the anniversary date.

Well, times change, and I honestly can't afford premium service any
more. And they won't let me cancel. Not even some early-termination
fee. Just won't consider it. They say I have to pay for another 9 months
of service, even if they go ahead and disconnect the line. Like I'm sorrry
that my financial situation doesn't line up with their calendar.

Other than extracting the maximum amount of money from customers,
and making it nearly impossible to leave, I can think of no valid
reason for this. The minimum contract length is to compensate
for up-front costs associated with new service. That's perfectly
reasonable. But this is outrageous.

UPDATE: I finally cut the cord from these bozos. No amount of talking
could convince them that it was in their best interest to terminate service
early and accept a payoff of less than the full monthly cost * remaining
term (idiots. Over 50% of what I send them went straight to COVAD,
and you'd think they could realize that by cutting that expense they
had an opportunity to make money.)

As the final insult, I mailed them a letter explaining that as required
under the term of the contract, I was electing not to renew, and
that the service should be terminated on the anniversary date. They
called me and explained that if the service was terminated early,
as I requested, they would charge me for the rest of the service
term anyway. Morons. I had to call them on the phone and explain
in little tiny words that the very simple sentences in the letter meant
TERMINATE ON THE SERVICE ANNIVERSARY. They eventually
agreed to change my termination instructions (not getting it. Just not
getting it).

But I am now finally free. Out a massive pile of money that I really
didn't need to piss away. Bitter? Yes. You betcha

They give you a subnet6, or configure NAT, whichever you choose, they configure the router to whatever specifications you need, or you can use your own! Of course you get a static, no one cares if you run your own servers, your free!
