I have been a LOYAL customer of Global Crossing for over 12 years. I work for a local telco company and we resell Global Crossing as our long distance service. I spend over $4000 per month every month with this company. I have a customer that is moving their toll free telephone number away. We have submitted the request to move their number away about 10 times now and every time it is rejected. The customer keeps telling me that it is rejected due to unsatisfactory payments (meaning money is due on the account). I have contacted my global rep every time and they check the account, everything seems fine and tell me that it is getting rejected for address mismatch so I have passed this information back to my customer. My customer (without my knowledge) called Global Crossing directly and Global told them that they can't transfer it away because my company has a $4000 balance and it needs to be taken care of before the transfer can happen. My customer is obviously furious. Global's response is oh yes, you have to have a $0 balance in order to transfer any toll free numbers. A $0 balance? When we do $4000 per month with a company- that's outrageous! They continue to hold this toll free number hostage.

I got internet in Ohio through My Esuite (global Crossing). They initially said it would be a 3meg line. Well come to find out it's 3megs shared for the entire apartment complex.
Some days you can get 500kpbs down but never close to the 3 meg service they state. It all depends on whose on. It's really sad when your upload is higher than your download. I Can't even watch flash videos without running over the buffer.
Support- You can forget it. I have called twice and they are a joke. They won't come out and say we just can't give you what you want. They try to appease you with promises that we will fix it and they can't.
If you go to thier web site »www.myesuite.com/ and try to dial the support numbers they go into a mailbox service that you can't navigate through or access.
If you ever have the choice and myesuite is one of them, please stay away. It's one ISP no one will miss if they ever go out of business.

"tech support"
"Contract!"
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money:

The main complaint I have is the recent shape of doing business and the contracts you are unwittingly pacified into. I discontinued my service 1/2 way (6 mos.) through my "contract". I no longer saw the service as useful as I am not a major uploader or downloader and that internet speed is too subjective on whether or not the visited site gives a hoot about good uptime or keeping updated. Our hometown dsl provider may be "fast" but the other 50% of that speed depends on the "stability" of the site you visit (to name only one fact.)
The voracious and intimidating CSR in the termination department at Frontiernet Rochester wanted to convince me to stay with this menace of a company after taughting the $70 fee I would immediately be liable for if I left! "Let's look at the savings" they said. "Let's look at the math."
Look at your contract agreement. Do you know where it is in your house? Do you remember the big, bold print telling you the exact dollar figures for leaving in the middle of your contract? Probably not. And don't forget, the advertised price is thrown into one big sum and taxed on the whole big pot. ("We have no control over that")
They charge me a $70 penalty. I save $180 ((6)$29). I still make $110 for not having to be a slave to Frontiernet. In your face.

"Good enough to stay"

I got DSL via Primenet in Phoenix, which has been abosrobed into the Frontier arm of Global Crossing. The only real problem I had was with US West's (now Qwest) prequalification of the line, which ended up being yes then no then yes. Then they ran out of DSLAM slots at the local exchange. Once all those hurdles were cleared the service came on and has been very reliable.
The service is bridged access with a Cisco 675 and a static IP. The initial speed was 256/256, but that's been bumped to 640 down/256 up. The service offers Unix shell access and national dial-up numbers for use when travelling, at no extra cost. That makes up for the slightly higher ISP cost ($25/mo + $29.95 telco DSL).
The only reason I would hesitate recommending them is that after all the mergers/aquisitions, the home users seem to be more of a nuisance to Global Crossing than anything else. The former Primenet service is only offered in Phoenix and Tucson, and is not part of the Lightning Link service Frontier offers elsewhere.
UPDATE: I gave up on them and switched to Qwest Choice VDSL, see »Review of Qwest.net by alanhdsl.

Frontiernet (Global Crossing) installers arrived at appointed time to do the install, 14 day after my call to order. At my home for 30 minutes and was up & running @ 654kbs download and 100 upload. I was a happy guy.
For no apparent reason, speeds dropped one day to average of 206kbs down & 104 up. Called tech. support they had me check some things on my end, with no improvement. Tech. rep said they were mostly for connectivity and forwarded me to another rep. Representative Pam had me try some things, (disconnect router, plug straight through to wall, remove surge protector) with no improvement, 2 days later a new DSL modem was at my door. Pam called me to hook it up and try it, no improvement. Sent it back. Pam said she would send out rep w/laptop to connect at street & see if it could be wiring or cordless interference.
Rep showed at appointed time found that prob was at CO. Made a couple of calls to check settings and found that my settings at CO had been changed to their lower price 256kbs option by mistake. They entered in correct settings, and voila!, the next speed test showed 856kbs down and 112 up. Not bad at all.
Extremely happy with attention and promptness and knowledge of support personnel and provider in general. I'll be with them for a while.

After over 1 year of being teased with emails from mindspring about having dsl avail. in my area, I decided to look elsewhere. I found that Frontier (A Global Crossings company)was finally putting in access to my area I came to find out an old friend of mine was the person I was speaking to in the dsl office in Rochester N.Y. After a wait (for the CO to be installed), which was installed on time, I got the visit for the test, on the proper day and time, how pleasant. After that, I got notification that the self install packages (which I requested) would be in a perticular day at CompUSA. I went there on the appointed day, and my package was waiting for me. I only had to sign a release, and off I went. Came right home as excited as a 7 year old on Christmas eve, and began to setup my new service. In less then one hour, I had installed all the stuff, I had pre-wired the house for a hard wiring of the DSL modem with cat 5 direct to the main junction were the line comes in.. Well, the only speed troubles I had were rwin related and were fixed by a visit here (thanks for being here DSLReports!!) I now have the system working with an SMC Barricade Gateway/Router, to an 8 port switch, and all 4 of my computers in the house work with speeds as good as can be expected with a 1mb/128k connection. The IP appears to be STATIC, even though I was told it would be dynamic

Computer tech and phone techs arrived 10 min early....line was set up, equipment attached, and computer configured for service within 30 min. The review may be a bit early.. I've only had the service for 5 days..but it's been great. Speeds are supposed to be max 1Mbps down and 128 Kbps up and in my most recent test I got 861 down and 130 up. I have not required tech support but have been reading online support through frontiernet's WWW site and it has been informative. Equipment is a Cisco 677 ADSL router---- dynamic IP.

I ordered a 1.54 Mps SDSL loop on 6/30/00. My salesperson seemed to answer my questions reasonably and after some haggling, I was able to get 3 months free over a 12 month period. The price for the SDSL line is $ 410 monthly, however after taking into account the free months, the adjusted monthly cost will be $ 307.50. My order specified a Netopia R7100-C router using a DSLAM through Northpoint along with 32 static IP's (29 usable). There is no extra charge for IP's which is important to me as I may need more.
As of today, I have NOT received any installation date?, I have NOT seen or heard from my ILEC (Cincinnati Bell) regarding the copper loop to the CO?, and after 2 emails & voice messages, have NOT heard back from my sales rep???
It has been over 70 days/10 weeks since my order and if no quick resolutuion is received within 1 week, I will have no choice but to seek out another DSL provider? I am suprised that a ISP such as Global Crossing would be so lax about provisioning this line. This is/was supposed to be a business DSL service which requires more a more precise level of service that small to medium sized businesses require.
I will post an update within 1 week. I can only hope the next update will be more positive?
9/17/00 Update:
Finally got ahold of my sales rep who in turn passes me off to my 'customer care rep'. She looks up my order and agrees order is taking way too long. Says that Northpoint has had my order since 7/12/00 and has not responded??? Rep claims will update me on 9/18/00 after getting more info out of Northpoint. The DSL food chain is Global Crossing > Northpoint > Cincinnati Bell/Broadwing which obivously is leading to mis-communication and somebodys failure to process an order!
9/20/00 Update:
Now my 'customer care rep' tells me Northpoint JUST placed the order for a copper loop with the ILEC, Cincinnati Bell???? What the hell were they doing in the last 2 1/2 months? She advises me that they will have a copper loop install date within 9 days, at which point the ILEC will actually do the work within a week AFTER the mythical install date. None of this even mentions when a Northpoint or Global Crossing rep would even show up??? I am told not to expect anything until mid October!!!!!!!!!!!
If you are a small or medium business customer thinking of Global Crossing, be very specific regarding your installation time estimate, make GC work hard for your business and hold them to their promises. Little concern is made regarding the needs of a business, the planning it takes to prepare a network for a bandwidth change, assignment of IP's within a DMZ, DNS changes, etc. It doesnt matter who is at fault, Global Crossing is the one selling the service, its their brand on the line! A 3-4 month install time period is embarrasing considering we are only 5400 feet from our CO, already have an ADSL loop ( so we know its available here) and for a supposed "business grade" service!
10/06/00 Update
Cincinnati Bell shows up 2 days ago and starts preparing for extra loops from the manhole in our street to our demarcation point. They come back the following day to replace the 100 pair gel pack (where all the splicing takes place). They manage to knock out our multiple phone lines, but have them up again after I go out and bring it to their attention. They pack up and leave at which point I find out they managed to disconnect 7 customers near me! Global Crossing finally emails me and calls me to advise me that Cin Bell will connect the Northpoint loop today. The installer shows up, cant find a tone, cant even begin to figure out what the prior crew did and says he'll make a report to engineering and try to return sometime next week? Bare in mind this ISP originally promised me service within 6-8 weeks from order! 14 Weeks 1 Day has now elapsed since date of order. Dismal, Poor, Failure, Incapable, Horrible are the current crop of words to describe this experience!
10/13/00 Update
Well credit DSL Reports for getting some results. These reviews are read by ISP's and they should realize that the consumer is vocal! I have been in contact with the Global Crossing Regional Mgr. based here in Cincinnati who has indicated my order was placed on high priority. The local bell has been here everyday from Monday to Thursday this week and fully confirmed that the loop to the C/O is now good and has been confirmed by Northpoint as being very clean with no apparent noise or shorts. My 'Customer Care Rep' has now actually called me several times and updated me on the order status. A router has been FedEx'd and Northpoint is now due for final installation 10/18/00? I have not been given or notified what my block of IP is (32 IP's, 29 usable) which is required for migration purposes, otherwise the install may be problematic? I will be posting further updates on how the install went, latency, packet loss, uptime and QOS (quality of service) is. 15 weeks and counting.............
10/24/00
Jackpot! Northpoint's out-sourced install tech calls the morning of 10/18/00 and says he will be here whenever I want. I suggest early afternoon and advise him all inside wiring is complete and ready. Tech shows up at 1:00 on the dot, comes into my office and plugs in the router and jackpot, we have a live wire! He is not aware of my extra IP requirements, but explains that is an ISP issue. The tech even made sure I had the serial management cable and gave a quick lesson on the configuration and how to edit changes. He ran a few tests and confirmed that the line was operating as ordered. He said the only concern was to keep an eye on the line noise reading which was around 25 db. I had to configure the IP's to a server myself and after a quick call to Global Crossing was up and running. Speed tests show an average of 95% of bandwidth available both ways over several days and 99.9% uptime. I do have one last problem they are working on which is some latency to the 1st hop/router from my gateway which will have to be resolved prior to switching carriers without affecting my users.
10/27/00 Final Report:
Guess what, the service works! The latency we were experiencing was due to the fact our colocated servers were on xo.net's datacenter which has a poor peering agreement with Global Crossing, but xo.net is not known for high-performance either! Latency to sites within Global Crossing average 38-50ms (Not Bad!), average to sites on other peered networks average 62-77ms nationwide (Not bad, again!) and the worst seem to roll in at about 100-132ms within North America & Europe. OZ sucks due to Telstra's SAT link in Perth which always adds 150-200ms to anything. 100% uptime, no packet loss and good bandwidth (see below), full bandwidth to GC server's tested at 102% throughput! Service Level Agreement calls for 99.9% uptime and 85ms latency within Global Crossing's network.

2000-10-23 07:33:59 Speed test 1381/1210 kbps
Remember DSL Reports bandwidth tests are a 'general' idea of your speed, there are many factors that prevent one from see 'true' throughput. I can now fully recommend the service although I would be very persistent upon getting GC to improve their install times. SDSL is not a perfect science yet, but its slowly getting there for some. There's nothing like seeing emails with 57 Mb attachments go through like lighting!

Lost service due to the collapse of Northpoint Communications. No remedy available as Rhythms also pulled out of the Cincinnati, OH market and Covad never set foot here. Looking for alternate solutions that are not ILEC.

I would like to submit a review of my local telelphone company's DSL service in
Rochester, NY which is Frontier's "Lightening Link". The computer tech showed on time. The phone tech did not show at all even though I called 2 hrs before the appointment to make sure I was still scheduled. After repeated calls, a phone tech arrived 6 hours after I had already taken time off from work. Phone Technician installed 1 extra filter w/o charging me. Once I was up and running, the speed was better than adverstised 897 mps. 1 week later, My DSL AND phone line went down. It took 3 days and several phone calls to get service. The speed is nice but the service is horrendous.
