Reasonably fast (2002 update - very reliable)
(2006 Update) - No longer the same value for the $$
Although satisfied, I gave it up for OOL

I live in Highland Mills (Orange County, NY) - local telco is Frontier Communications. Getting DSL was a chore - they're very slowly rolling it out across the service area. No other option (COVAD,etc) is available in the area.

Installation was pretty smooth - computer tech showed up and did the trick in 15 minutes. Speed was abysmal - took a couple of days for them to figure out that the DSLAM side was incorrectly configured.

Promised speed is 'up to 1 megabit/sec down and 128k up'. Generally consistent speed tests on DSLREPORTS shows about 700k down/130k up - not unreasonable. I'm towards the far end of the rated distance for service.

Two frustration points:

1 - they randomly take down various servers (like the DNS server) with no warning. One minute you're flying along and the next you're dead in the water. They have got to start treating this as a business with SLAs (service level agreements) and schedule downtime for updates/upgrades/etc with posted and e-mail notification !!

2 - The modem/router is a CISCO 677. What a nice piece of equipment. Too bad they've dumbed it down to the point they have. It's capable of NAT and DHCP client/server, but it's configured to obtain a single IP address and withold NAT. They say it's dynamic IP - but 99.44 percent of the time you get the same IP when you renew the address. To this point they will not provide the management password to allow you to change the config. In the meantime, I'm using WIN98SE ICS to share the connection with more computers ---- but I shouldn't have to !

Overall - no serious complaints and it's worth the money.

2002 Update.

Since this was posted, the Cisco has been swapped out (no charge) with an Efficient Speedstream 5667. This router has been super reliable - and is a little faster than the Cisco.

Network downtime has been minimal - extremely rare. Occasional issues with DNS - but these are very sporadic and not much of a problem.

If you're in the neighborhood and want broadband, this is a good choice.

2003 Update.

Still have the same Speedstream modem. Overall I would say that the service has been more reliable over the past 12 months, when compared to the preceding 12.

Still occasional minor DNS issues every once in a rare while.

I am very happy - although I would like to see a 3mb option in this area, and/or a price change to compete with our neighbors a few miles up the road who have Verizon DSL...

2006 Update.

In November of 2005, I took advantage of an 'intro' offer from Cablevision for OptimumOnline - $29.95/month. Although Frontier had upgraded the service to 3/768, OOL announced they were upgrading to 15/2 by June '06. So, for an intro price that's 2/3rds of what Frontier is charging me, I get 5x the download and upload?? Didn't have to think too long on that one..... I kept the Frontier DSL as a backup (I do a lot of VPN work) - but finally cancelled it on 9/29/06 as OOL has been 100% reliable. Frontier just can't compete with OOL....

You can get into that nice piece of equipment.

You know you can get into the router. Connect the console cable to your com port, start hyperterm or something similar. Unplug and then plug in the router, when you see it boot, put in the break sequence as specified by the cisco docs. It will give you a memory dump. At the very bottom, you will see "password=" and then a jumbeled word. Dont let that fool you. The incryption is only 2 letter shifting. So A would be C , B would be D etc.

About frontier and the Cisco 677

Just so its made clear, Users on the frontiernet.net domain are not allowed into the cisco 677 firmware because it is a security risk to others who are on that users same subnet. It would allow this user to remotely manage other peoples routers. For this reason, we dont allow users to have admin access to this hardware.

The salient point was not addressed.Outages.
I can only suggest that something is fundamentally wrong in frontier's approach to the *Always On* creed of how broadband should be. Tec support doesn't know how long it will take to address any problem, or they are not saying. Global Crossing, and/or, Frontiernet customer support listen well-- but nothing seems to change. [original post:"Two frustration points:

The *Lightning Link* will go down, and no one can give you a 5-6 hour spread when it may come back up. Try this when you think of lightning link or cable. To whom to give your hard earned money.
These are the dates that the *LINK* has been down this year so far that I have called in on. These are documented, not my hardware, the service just went down-midpage so to speak-
1/01/ 8:30AM-- for hours-gave up, was told all Frontiernet down

1/03/ 11:35PM-- lost service again today

1/10 2:00-5:00AM-- might have been planed-no notification

2/05 10:35PM--was told it had been down before this time- told ok to use dial-up number

2/11 Planned outage at 3:00AM [2/10]-8:30AM[2/11],comes up at 11:00AM[2/11]

2/12 Drops from 5:00PM-6:00PM

2/13 8:15AM DSL down [ Frontier Work Ticket #106507],call customer service, started to remember to ask for work ticket numbers on outages,go to dial up- do not know when DSL came back up today

3/19 1:00AM DSL went down for at least 2 hours.

3/28 10:45AM DSL went down, came up for a bit and went down again at 12:15PM-{ Work Ticket# 2001)

4/25 10:15AM DSL goes down [Ticket 2809],dial up also down-more than a *few* hours.

5/20 9:00AM DSL and dial up dead. Dial-up good at 9:30AM, DSL good at 11:30AM

5/24 10:00PM Mail is down

here I stop giving re-up times, someone *Linked* would know :
5/27 Dashboard Down-11:30AM
6/1 7:00AM DSL down
6/13 11:40PM DSL down
8/16:00PM DSL down
8/8 planned work-no notice-2:15AM
8/10 1:30PM DNS Dashboard problem,interrupted service.

I started keeping track of events longer than a few hours, on 7/27/00,so other than those listed above,I have outages on7/27/00, [I have removed details, 95% of the dates relate to denial of full service, the rest of e-mail or other parts of service for more than 2 and less than 24 hours] 8/2/00, 8/8/00, 8/24/00, 10/10/00, 10/11/00, 11/07/00, 11/18/00, 12/17/00(only a short time today)--1/01/01.

Who cares if you can't program the router,if you can't access the service?
If you need a mature broadband internet solution for your home or office, please do not ignore the above when you chose a provider.
I hope i still have a connection after this,... I would just like to see them get better....

Re: About frontier and the Cisco 677

Wow, what a load of sh*t. I do know you work for frontier/global crossing because of your domain there. If you check the subnet mask on the cisco it is 255.255.255.252, that gives you 3 IP addresses, 1 for the gateway (ie the 677), one for the broadcast, and one for the computer (or nat box), which means, you couldnt browse anyone elses networks anyway. Also you cannot legally restrict peoples access from equipment that they own. We could bring a class action on you if we really wanted, but it is just easier to get the break in info from cisco and change the password so you cant get in, which, is incedentally exactly what I did. I suggest everyone do this btw and check what speed they have your modem set at, because if you are paying for 1meg down and you are set @ 768 then you are intitled to some money back. Also with frontier DSL you go through their own NAT box, how do I know? GO to a site that shows your IP address, it is different from your computers. I havnt checked this yet, but I bet you that they dont even own the public addresses they give us, and are just using them on their internal network, which would make them NEED the nat box. Oh yea one more thing. Do a trace route to yahoo or some other system, you will see it takes 9!!!! yes NINE hops to get out side of their network, with one of the hops actually repeating directly after it's self. To me that is some f*cked up routing tables, and I would know, I am a CCNA and an MCSE.

unaccessable routers

i know frontiers PW to get in the routers they are universal. If they would allow people to pick thier own passwords then they wouldnt have to worry about them getting into others routers. Its very simple actually. Frontier likes to be able to access your router anytime they want. So that is why they will not let you pick your own PW. I have said the PW in this pragraph a several times. Frontier does things differently from any other ISP I have ever seen.

For the past 2 years up until January, I had Charter Communications' 2-way cablemodem service called Charter Pipeline. I recieved excellent pings and transfer rates consistent with what I had for bandwidth all the time. Was hardly ever down. Over the past 6 months, it got increasingly worse. It was also grossly overpriced. $50 for 500k _CABLE_ access? Give me a break! I get 1meg for $50 a month here. The router is a Cisco 677router and I don't see where the guy from NY gets the 48 hour lease from. I have had mine logged in since it was first turned on in January and have never had to reconnect. The speeds on DSLreports.com for me are usually around 868-900k downstream and 111k upstream. Ping times in games are solid...they never waver greatly. I get 70-100ms, a lot of times it is around 80ms though. Even in a huge Counter-Strike server (32/32 players), I still had no packetloss. Everything about Frontier's DSL service is PERFECT, except for a 128k cap. I hope frontier reads this!

Oh yeah, and when I called Tech Support about a problem with the DSL modem (wasn't on their end), I was on hold for only around 1 min 30 secs. The Tech Support guy also knew exactly what he said and responded to my question instantly.

UPDATE: Its been quite a while, and I have seen downtime more than once. One was from a storm, and it was gone for 4 days! They replaced the Cisco 677 eventually with Efficient Networks SpeedStream modems. The ping times have been reduced GREATLY. At the time of that writing before, it was 70-100ms, but now it is 20-40ms, however they switched their network to Electric Lightwave and it has sucked badly. Most local ones and regional spots ping 100-150ms, and ones far away ping 50-60ms. I don't understand it, but I also have troubles keeping the line leased...it consistently loses a connection and takes forever to get the DHCP to respond. The tech support people are NOT helping in any way, shape, or form.

If things keep up for the next 2 weeks, I am switching the ISP to VISI because I hear it has done wonders for other users. You should do the same.

Re: Frontier Lightning Link in MN

Lorcan (or any other Frontier Lightning Link customers in the Lakeville, MN area) can you please break down the quality of service and your monthly cost since the new year? Charter has gone downhill since 2002 and I am about to call and demand a 1/2 month credit and cancellation of my service.

Before I jump ship to DSL. I would like to know the Download/Upload speed YOU see everynight, not what they advertise. Tech support, if you would like to comment please do. I am getting so fed up with Charter it isn't even funny anymore. Their help desk contacts have been helpful, it is the paying $50 for a 48K connection that makes me mad.

I love it

I use Frontier DSL in Lakeville and have never been down yet. I never unplug my router. I also have multiple IP's and have 3 other cpu's on one DSL line and it rocks. WE play games with it mostly and download movies and music with 2 cpu's at the same time and have no problems. Ping is normally around 65 while gaming. I have noticed no drop in speed if I do I unplug the rounter and restart it and its better. I am not on the new router yet but I heard its fast and better. I do like this better that cable that I use to have.

Lightning Link - Happy with

I have had Lightning Link for close to 3 years in Farmington. I am one mile outside the city limits and can count on one hand how many times my DSL connection has been down. I believe it's a bit pricey compared to other DSL providers, but I don't want cable and it's the only other option at this time. Used to have troubles with speed, but after unloading Kazaa and other free software with bundled spyware, speed is back to where it was when it was first installed. Check your running task list and compare it to dictionary of running processes at www.answersthatwork.com. Spyware is running rampid and slowing down high speed connections everywhere. I work for a competing ISP across town and have the same complaints. Check into it before blaming the physical connection. FYI.

Down Nationwide Wednesday, Thursday, Friday last week. Now down again
in my area this morning.
So, I've only been able to connect 2 out of the last 6 days!

One time connection fee was $250 for DSL modem and install.

1/16/2003 update
They replaced the Cisco 677 routers with Efficient Networds SpeedStream 5667 dsl modem routers. These seem to be much more reliable. I went through several Cisco's in the last few years. They seemed very sensitive to damage by electrical storms (even though nothing else was damaged).

service has improved. Outages are infrequent and short lived when they do happen.

I ordered ADSL and it was installed on the promised date. It was easy to order and a very good install experience. They got me up and running within 60 minutes. A Frontier phone guy and a guy from CompUSA show up to ensure the line is operational and help you install the NIC card, setup the modem and configure your network settings. The modem is a Cisco 677. I have a dynamic IP and only a 48 hour lease time ... that is a bit of a bummer. But, overall I am very pleased with my first 6 days of broadband.

UPDATE: now over 1 year since first install. Frontier Lightening Link has greatly improved their availability and my up/down rates are very stable. Lease time not an issue now, help desk has been responsive and I would reccomend them highly now.

The lease time sucks. but it can be circumvented!

I got a pleasant surprise when I bought a gateway so I could hook up multiple computers to my LL.
I bought an SMC Barricade to do this.
It has a stay connected forever feature that automatically refreshes the lease time
I suppose other units may have this as well, but I can only say for sure that this one has it, and it works very well.

I paid $98 + shipping for this unit, an excellent price.
I hope this helps you out

Re: The lease time sucks. but it can be circumvented!

A lease time is the number of hours that your login to the provider will stay active.
When I log in to my provider,, it get 50 hours, if you do not login again (via a login and pw on a webpage) you are disconnected from the service until you login again.
With the SMC barricade , it renews this lease time automatically before it runs to 0 if you program it to do so in the setup area.
Hope this explains what you wanted to know, if not, write me another

Re: The lease time sucks. but it can be circumvented!

Actually, that is not entirely true. I have Frontierdsl in Hopewell and my running connect time as stated in the dashboard has been as high as 247 hours. Granted I went in the cisco 677 router via the console port and tweaked some things, but that should have nothing to do with it. What is actually happening is this. The frontier CO gives your Cisco 677 a static address for the Lan port. They then set up the Cisco to use the GLite standard, they put in the username and password into the config and make it a DHCP server with an IP pool of 1 address, and with the mask set as 255.255.255.252, there are only 3 addresses, one for your gateway (the cisco), one for you, and one for broadcast. So even tho it is DHCP, you will always get that same address. When a DHCP client has about 40% of it's time left, it renegotiates the lease. Oh btw, frontier will not give out the password for the cisco 677s claiming they do not know it and that they do not know who sets them up. I also tried to contact CompUSA but they didnt know either. If you need or want to get into them just look on cisco's site. Just remember to back up your config by copying what is displayed with "show run". Remember you paid for these cisco 677s, they cost a crap load, and have a LOAD of features. It has a dhcp client and server built in so if frontier was like a NORMAL dsl provider, it could take the place of a proxy machine or broadband router or whatever you have connecting your lan to the dsl. Personally I use Win2K Advanced Server running as a NAT router and DHCP server, but I would rather just use the cisco. Infact when I first got Frontier DSL, they had a pool of 5 IP addresses that you could use, so my router was just hooked up to the uplink port on my switch. Oh well, that was my rant. As soon as Cablevision gets Cable Modems here I will switch to that.

what do you u guys usally get for down/up rates. I have had lightning link for quite some time and im fed up. completely fed up with the lack of quality i am getting in my area. I have called their number numerous times asking about sudden shut downs, slow dl rates, and the one that concerns me the most is my latency and ping in games. I know that kinda sounds stupid but we pay the same as any other person that lives in our area, and all of their tracerts and pings in games show atleast a 80 ms time difference, for the same location with same # of hops. Its gotten so bad that i cant even play and it quite frankly ticks me off, anyone else see this problem?

Wasn't really anything else available in my area so we went with Frontier Lightning link. I have had it about 2 months now and no real problems. They had a special when I ordered for a free speed stream modem, self install and no contract.Install was easy.Ordered 1000down/128up. After DSL reports tweaks getting about 850dn/109up pretty consistently. Not 1000 I ordered but most say if you get to 90% of what you ordered you are doing ok, so at least I am somewhat close. Have 2 pc's networked using the DSL line with a 2wire router and have not seen any substantial drop off. Is worth going with if the speed I listed is good enough for you. No contract so if you do not like you can cancel.I only called Tech support once for a minor problem and they were nice and helped me fix the problem right away. Would have to give it a pretty good rating for now. Would be great if they had static IP and price was a little cheaper. It is $35 for DSL service and then $10 for the ISP. The only other ISP you could use is AOL right now.

This is my second attempt with Frontier, I had DSL with them when it was first offered in my area over a year ago. Got out of the IT field and dropped the DSL. Started doing a LOT of large downloads (Linux releases and updates, among others) and ordered DSL again, I already had a Cisco677 from the first subscribtion... I am charged for a new one AND told that this time I can not get access to the management console yet they say I own this one, also, since when can a second party prevent you from accessing your own property? When I ordered I requested additional IP's to cover a couple other machines I have here, when the tech (CompUSA contracts in my area) and telco guy showed up close to on time and the install went ok except that it took 3 more weeks of calling everyday to get the additional IP's configured.. If only I could have used the NAT capabilities of the Cisco router.

My low rating for tech support is NOT with the help desk (there great and have gone out of their way even with unsupported OS's), but with the Monroe "Special Services" group, they work hours that a banker would envy, while the Rochester group is avilable 24 hours a day, except they are NOT authorized to make any system config changes to the Monroe servers.. Why?

If you look at Frontiers "Lightning Link" page it talks about a "self install" option this is only available if you live in out of the way areas. NOT if you live in the Orange County service area. this is according to the Monroe, NY sevice people.

Installation--- $250.00

1 block addl IP's(5)---$4.99

Internet access---$10.00 ( discounted for using Global Long distance)

DSL---- $34.99

total reoccurring charges $49.98

Final thoughts on Frontier-- wish they had other carriers in Orange County (NY) to compete with them to bring prices inline with other advertised near here

at this time I have had my longest connection 1200+ hrs. usally it dropped after 300hrs. the lease time has varied over the last 6 months from 12 hour to 2wks and has settled in at 48hrs for the last couple of months.

Do not rely on pre-existing internal phone wiring. The telco guy had no problem connecting my dedicated shielded Cat 5 line straight to the box and putting a jack on the other end by the PC; and he agreed that was a very good idea. I always get around 820+K down and around 112K up. Price with ISP is $49 per.

I run sygate on the main PC and use 2 other clients; all very quick. It is a dynamic IP with a 48 hour lease time (if I recall correctly). Cisco 677. Definately TWEAK your machine using the recommendations on this site; it improved my speed. So far I am very happy with the service. Tech support is probably not too great; thats why you gotta learn as much as you can. Bottom line so far: I've had the service about a week and have had no problems. As long as you know your stuff and do what you can on your end, you should be okay. I can't imagine going back to dialup!!

Update 3.20.01 - have had service almost a month now. Was down once that I was aware of, for about 2-3 hours. Other than that no problems. Always pretty good speeds, i think slowest was around 720 down. Happy with Frontier.

Where in Hopewell can you get DSL???

Where are you located in Hopewell that you can get DSL? I'm in East Wappingers, the Edgehill Manor area, and I'm being told that this stuff isn't available in Dutchess at all.

I am about 8,000 feet from a central office. Go here and plug in your address: »www.frontierlightninglink.com/

If you are close enough to a central office, you're all set.
If not close enough..it won't happen. Keep me posted..

As far as I know the only CO in the area is the Rt 82 Frontier CO in Hopewell that offers it. That is where I have mine from.

It is DSL, that is pretty much the only good thing about it.
I have high latency for DSL (150 ms +) all the time, the line is frequently down.
If it is all that is in your area it is better than nothing.

I ordered DSL from frontier, they only offer the GLite standard, and within 30 days, I had someone from Comp USA at my house and a Tech from frontier on our phone pole out side. I work in the IT industry, I deal with cisco routers everyday. I was very pleased to see the dsl router that we were given was a cisco 6xx series. When we first got it set up and the comp usa guy demoed it to us (I had DSL before, nothing new to me, but new to my family), I was first dismayed at the fact you had to log on to their website to activate the dsl link. There is no tiem period that the link will stay up, I have had it stay up for 5 hours, and I have had it stay up for 50+ hours, both times using it the whole time, when you are playing a game it can really get on your nerves. The second thing that got me pissed was the fact that I was getting anywhere between 20 and 90 % packet loss the first night. I contacted the Tech support (24 hour, saved it form getting a 1) and explained what I was getting, and they tried pinging me and saw the same thing. I then told them what I do (network admin) and suggested that since they are getting the packetloss to me from whtin the frontier network, then maybe it is a router between us, and possibly the DSLAM at the local CO. They of course thinking they know more than EVERY customer, blew it off and put out a ticket. For the next 2 WEEKS I was calling them EVERY SINGLE DAY about the connection problems. Finally my father called in a favor to a friend of his who worked as a tech at the CO, he quickly unplugged my line from one DSLAM port to another and BAM my PL was down to 0%. I then wrote a lengthly letter to the CEO about my experience and told him the only person to listen to me was the local tech. I have yet to recieve a response from him. After that fiasco the service is OK at best, I get high latency to every server I connect to, 150 ms +. I also wanted to use my own dsl router/NAT (network address translation) box so I could have my whole house connected, so I asked for the password to the cisco dsl router they gave me, so I could get the PAP password from the configuration. Well needless to say, tech support dos'nt know the password, and they dont know (or wont tell) who dose know it. Since I work with cisco routers all the time, I know that if you have physcial access to a router there is a way to get the username and password, incase you forgot it, or in my case, never had it. Because I fully paid for the router in the setup fee, then I have full legal access to the router and configuration within it. If you want to know how to get access to the router then go to cisco's site and do a search for password recovery or something of that sort. I ended up just using a linux box running freesco ( a free linux router distro with the power of cisco's router os ). Overall Frontier's DSL srevice is poor, and dont let the "Sir we are still new to DSL..." bit fool you, they still should be able to provide acceptable service.

Too bad

I've got a couple friends that have Frontier's dialup (dis)service in Highland Mills, and I have heard nothing good about them at all. You might want to check and see if Computer.Net is up and running in your area yet (I know they've got several POP's throughout Westchester/Putnam/Rockland/Orange. Try 'em out.

I live in Monroe in Orange county New York zip 10950. My Phone Ccompany
is Frontier main offices in Rochester New York. They are part of Global
Crossing Company. Frontier is now offering residential ADSL in Monroe
and other areas. The data rate is said to be as high as 1Mbs and the
DSL cost $35 permonth plus $15 ISP per month. Right now you can only
get ISP from them but in the future ISP might be available from other
provides. I have had DSL for a month now there and have had a few
outages but we have had son servier wether lately so I will not fault
Frontiers service. After tweaking the TCP recieve buffer and doinf
some speed testing I was very suprised. My home is 15,456 feet from the
CO and the speed is great. Using MSN speed test I normally do better
than 680Kbs but have seen speeds as high as 1.9Mbs,
DSL Reports speed test show data rate so high I have no fath in it for
at times it repodts 46 to 50 tims as fast as 56K modem. I will run the
test now just to see if I get something more beievable. I see the java
test has changed its format. I now get 1.1Mb down 285Kb up

What Service???

I have DSL with Frontier since April.. I have had tons of problems.. My modem has been replaced 2 times... and both times it has taken forever for them to do so... I believe there are reliable companies out there that provide a better customer service then this 1.. i know a lot of people with DSL that are overly pleased with both their service and repair.. not the case here... Is sad but true!!!!
