I had TDS Metrocom as a DSL provider, and it stinked. I thought as a "best effort" technology it would be better than cable as I did not have to share with others, but it was miserable with speeds ranging from 111k down to 4mbits/sec as I was supposed to get. I just had WiMax installed on the side of the house, and I am getting 6mbits down / 3 mbits up no problem. I also get $10 unlimited local and long distance with it.

I've been very pleased with the TDS Telecom (Metrocom) ADSL service. My line has been rated for 768 kbps down and 384 kbps up, and my service constantly meets or exceeds those marks.
I'm a previous user of Road Runner cable service in another state and I truely believe my ADSL service is much more reliable! The program I contracted for was for 24 months and you had to buy the install kit, $279.00, pay a setup fee, $150.00, and the monthly cost is $49.95, a little costly, huh! Other than the high cost I think their DSL service is superb
Update: 2004-04-28: I've had TDS DSL for over three years and it is more than superb. In the last year my Speedstream modem died and TDS provided me with a brand spanking new one free of charge! WOW. That helps heal the wounds from the $279 install kit charge when I first signed up.
If you stop by and check my Network Setup you'll see that I've got a Linksys wireless router, with three PCs (2 cat five and one wireless) ANNNDDD an Xbox running wireless and I have WEP enabled. I'm very pleased with all aspects of TDS's ADSL and telephone service.

Original set up of 1,500 Kb/s DSL at my home was a snap. At the time there was a TDS office in my little rural town and they came to my home within a week.
Cost is about $40 per month plus another $20 or so for basic phone service. I don't watch TV so did not even consider cable or satellite service.
An ActionTec modem sits on my desk. Service interruptions have been few and each time I called tech support they already knew the issue and were working on it.
TDS seems like a good outfit, and the local employees I've met knew their stuff.

$329 per month- (60 month contract)
about 30 days TDS Metrocom "Fairly reliable service for the price" "Misleading information an poor customer followup on sales & billing" "good service if you can put up with install issues. Read review carefully!"
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money: (ratings match consensus)

When we moved our business operations in November to Northbrook, IL, we went in search of a new ISP. The building we decided on was only served by copper service, limiting our options somewhat. TDS/Metrocom was aggressively marketing their XDATA plus package, which offers 3 mb/s up/down service, along with 3 phone lines, at under $300.00/month.
We opted for two XDATA Plus packages, giving us a total of 6 mb/s service via two set of bonded T-1 lines, and 6 phone lines. Install time was quoted at 4 weeks from signing. During the process of negotiating the service, we specifically stated that we did NOT want the phone lines to be provisioned via VOIP or IP service, as we have had issues with both in the past. The sales rep promised that phone service would be via traditional copper circuits, until such time as they could offer reliable VOIP or IP based phone service. However, when the tech arrived to do the actual install, we found that the all the phone service would be provisioned via IP. A series of back-and-forth phone calls with the installation department ensued. As the sales rep was on vacation during the period of the installation and unavailable by phone, there was much confusion about what we were promised vs. what we received.
After an ongoing series of phone calls back and forth, we eventually agreed to accept having the phone service delivered via IP, but were forced to order one additional copper circuit (which we pay for) the handle the alarm and notification systems.
Needless to say, we weren't happy about having to pay for additional lines, or have to settle for the IP based phone system, but at that point we had no choice but to move forward.
The service we have received has been fairly reliable, with only one outage in the past 60 days (due to AT&T, which TDS uses to deliver premise services).
We have also had some issues with the billing we have received from TDS, which they have promised to correct, but it takes a long time to get a response.
Bottom line: We have so far been happy with the general service reliability and speeds, but very unhappy with the whole install and provisioning process.
Install Time: 4 weeks
Equipment: Carrier Access Adit 600 multi-platform data/voice terminal
Speed: 3 mp/s up/down (two bonded T-1 circuits)
Last Mile Provider: AT&T (Copper)

from the very begining tds was right there. I have a commercial account (computer shop) my biggest concern was stability and bandwidth I sometimes have 10 plus machines on line and didnt want any "bog" the salesman seemed to understand what i needed AND what i didnt i have a open connection, no software to install, plug a machine in and go. no minimum sys requirements like the "other" companies so i can plug in a win 95 machine with 16 meg ram if i have to!
about a year ago i tried to set up vpn so the accountant could access shop machine from home trying to get through the diff isp's gateways firewalls etc. i "confused" the modem/router i called tds the tech accessed it remotely and bingo i was back and um gave up on vpn

$80 per month TDS Metrocom "I live in the middle of nowhere in CO and still get some kind of service." "I can only get 3mb speeds" "I wish I could get higher. Lots of issues. Can't get resolve."
| |
I have had nothing but issues with these guys. My speeds are not anywhere what I should get. Had a tech come out and tell me since TDS is the only service I can get out here, they don't put a lot of importance on those with problems out here. There are too many users, too little T1 lines coming into our area. They say someone will call to help, nobody does. I am used to being in Seattle where I had Comcast 8mb service.. so something is better than nothing I guess. I live in Paonia, CO.. not many people here...

I have the 1.5 mb and I get close to that living three miles from the substation. I was provided with a Actiontec DSL Gateway modem. The order and the install process was easy. They gave instructions to get your DSL going. I dont really have any bad experiences. There was one time that we were out like 3 hours but that was due to someone cutting a fiber optic line. TDS is fine with me.

I have had TDS telecom's ADSL service for about 3 years now. I started with the 768k/384k DSL, which was the fastest service offered in the beginning. Then last year I upgraded to 1.5M DSL. And finally, a few months ago I upgraded to 3.0M DSL when it was first offered in Farragut, Tennessee. My service has been outstanding. My DSL has not been down any since I first ordered it. The speeds are consistent every day. My downloads now average around 2.6M on the dslreports broadband test and about 477k upload! I would highly recommend TDS telecom DSL to anyone in Farragut, TN. Update--I now have 4.0M DSL and my average download speed is 3.9M and my upload is 488k. Awesome. Very reliable!
