Note: That this is not a DSL Hook Up..............

I use these folks as a back up ISP, in the event my LAN takes a dive. They are only a 56k land line service and regularly hook up between 44-50K. I have had no bad experiences to report and I have subscribed to them for 4 years. I also use them as a primary for email inbound......Spam is extremely minimal and tech support is very strong. I pay them 9.95 a month lumped into a 24 month prepay. I have unlimited hours of use. I have a only a few disconnects. I have a stable connection.

"excuses or lies, they refuse to honor their contract"

    Hello,

I am trying to contact other BigNet DSL subscribers who had extended contracts
with BigNet. These contracts were cancelled in Dec 2001 when COVAD took back
    their lines.

Since then BigNet has promised to mail refunds and every month they have
    another excuse why they haven't.

I live in Michigan 48075 and am trying to get a list of others
experiencing the same run around as I am. I want to contact our Attorney
General about this to put some heat on BigNet to honor their contracturial
    agreement.

If you, too, are frustrated with BigNet's lack of cooperation concerning
this matter please email me at erk@thebookbeat.com.

    Regards,
    Everette

Ford Motor Company struck a deal with BigNet for DSL service at $25/mo (604/128 ADSL). I love the service. Since I subscribed to DirecTV, I couldn't get cable internet. The DirecPC system is only one-way (upload via modem) so DSL was the way to go. The first application to Ameritech got returned due to an address snafu. Once that was fixed, we were up and running pretty quickly. Although Ameritech failed to finish their part of the installation on time. The Ethernet modem (SpeedStream 5260) connected to my home network and I got both machines on-line pretty quickly. The folks at BigNet seem pretty knowledgeable. The installer from Covad was on-time and was done in 30 minutes. We are currently using a dynamic IP setup (PPPoE is supposed to be rolled out in the near future).

    UPDATED

Well, my contract with Big Net is over and I've switched to Comcast @ Home. Speeds are twice as fast. Installation took 20 minutes within 2 days of ordering. Now if someone would buy my old DSL modem on Ebay . . . .

I initially ordered the ADSL package...I only received the IDSL(little goof on Bignets part). Bignet has been useless from day one. I had horrendeous connection initially(downtime at 25%). NO response from support. I e-mailed every honcho up to and including the CEO. It still took a week to get any response. After I finally get an e-mail back from them and got the situation more or less corrected, things were OK for a while. We bought a house and I wanted to see about moving my service to the new house. I started SIX WEEKS prior to my move date trying to call them and leaving voice mail(I NEVER got a human voice), sent NUMEROUS e-mails....got no response. Left voicemail and e-mail with the billing dept to cancel my account because I could get no help to move my service......NO response. I finally again e-mailed evryone in upper management including again, the CEO( I still have a stack of saved e-mails as proof). After a WEEK, I get an e-mail from some tech dude. I explained what I wanted to do. A week later he comes back and says DSL is not available. I said ok and to have them cancel me as of 5/25/01. I NEVER started a contract with Bignet, but these yahoos still are trying to bill me through July. The whole company I found to be a joke from day one! FYI....I also e-mailed Covad for help and never heard from them either.

    ****************************UPDATE********************************************************

Since I finally got rid of BugNut, I have gotten cable. It's like finally getting rid of a bad appendage. What a relief!!!! I now get over 2mbps down.....I'm happy! I see so many folks (a lot of us from the Milwaukee area...hhmmmm) that have had such horrible experiences. What I don't get is why a government agency doesn't step in and mandate these yahoos either offer reliable service and support or get off the pot. I see the PSC here constantly bi**h slapping Ameritech in Wisconsin because of poor performance and Customer Service. Why can they (Public Service Comm. or the FCC or someone) step in and start putting the screws to this ludicrous service from BugNuts? OK....maybe the 3 satisfied customers they have might disagree(who are probably the upper management of bignet too), but from what I see here, these guys are taking money for a service that is never provided.

    **UPDATE 6/22**

I have had Comcast's (still called AT&T on the home page, but when you call tech support they say Comcast) cable modem service for 3 weeks now and it is a welcome relief from the hell that I experienced with Big Net. Speeds are extremely fast, upwards of 3 mbps down when getting a page from the proxy, and 1.2 mbps otherwise. They are a great company, and I am going to enjoy this service for a long time.

    *********************

Big Net is a totally irresponsible ISP. I have no idea how they could have possbily stayed in business this long. The only reason I signed up with them is because I got a special deal through Ford Motor Company, and I decided to take advantage. 144k IDSL for only $25 a month is really a steal, if it works. The connection is down or very slow most of the time, and you can never get a hold of a tech support person. Try it yourself. Call 1 (888) BIGNET-1 and choose option 3 for tech support. Hear that click? They just hung up on you. Their system has been doing that FOR OVER 2 MONTHS!!! That is extremely annoying, especially since e-mails go unanswered as well. I sure hope I am able to get through to the billing department, because I am cancelling this service immediately. I tried my hardest to put up with them, but I just can't do it anymore. I will pay the $200 cancellation fee with a smile, and then call Comcast so they can come and install my new cable modem. Good bye Big Net, you can be sure I won't miss you!

OK, here's the info from the memory jog:

    Speed: 144k IDSL at $25/month

Install: Covad guy was extremely friendly, no problems

Equipment: Efficient SpeedStream 5871 IDSL Router

IP Address: Started off as PPPoE, but changed to DHCP a few weeks ago

I have now almost honored my 12 month contract with BigNet. On the positive side, the installation a year ago went smoothly and as scheduled. For the most part, the service has worked.

    However....

As has been noted before, calling tech support is a nightmare. If you can get through to anyone, they can't help you, and no one (support, billing, etc) responds to email. Now that my contract is over, I have been trying for a month to get my line released so that I can change ISPs. I finally found someone who seemed to know what he was talking about. He told me to send him an email, and he would fax the release form to me. Still waiting....

On top of all of that, I told billing that I would not be renewing my contract, and that they should cancel my account once the contract expired. I have now been billed for the next month of service. I called to ask them about it, and all they could tell me was "It is noted on your record".

Has anyone successfully gotten a line release from this company? How did you do it?

(Update 5/21/01) A week after being promised the release, I called their billing department. The person I talked to there also told me they would fax a release. Waited a week...nothing. Called again, and was promised that I would be looking at the fax in less than an hour. Four hours later...nothing.

(Update 5/22/01) Well, it seems the only thing that this company can do on time is shut down my service at the end of the contract. Still no release form, and I talked to a fourth person yesterday afternoon, who also promised to fax it to me. I found that SpeakEasy had a self-release form, so I'm going to try that route. Here's hoping...

(Final Update 5/23/01) Still needed to have a release form. Called BigNet and today was told that I didn't need it because the line had been disconnected and that all I needed to do was call Covad and get a closure ticket. I called the number he gave me, and at 10am Eastern Time, got a recording that they didn't open until 7am Mountain Time. I'm giving up. I have ordered service with Ameritech, who does not use the same line as Covad. No wonder Covad appears to be in financial trouble...

Wow...I never knew there could be so many problems. I cancelled my contract with this provider about a month ago. Or actually, I notified them that I would not be renewing my account and receieved a verification email from their billing dept. I have had numerous problems with this company. And although, I have no other DSL providers that I have used previously to compare them to, I have no choice but to give them a bad review based on their performance. Several things that I didn't like have to do with their contract. I know, I know-shame on me. Yes, I read the fine print but was so excited to get DSL that I overlooked it.

    1. Contract automatically renews unless you let them know not to renew 30 days in advance.

    2. Billing dept retroactively billed me for the new govt. taxes--they back billed me 6 months!!!! I was penalized for them not doing their job properly in the first place.

    3. the status page on their website always shows all systems "up" when I went to check status. I know darned well that many times their system (DNS or mail) was down from time to time---because I couldn't get my mail or even browse the web. It has not been updated since 12/14/99. Check it out for your self----»www2.bignet.net/ then click on the "Support" gif on the right, then click on "Network Status" You will see what I mean

    4. When my service was "down" many days, I thought I could get reembursed for not having service when I was contracted to have it---wrongo!!! the contract says that they will not credit users for "service outages"

Some advice for those looking for DSL providers....check them out thoughougly!!

Once you sign a contract...your stuck.

I was a Bignet customer. During the 5 months I had them, I got mis-billed 3 times. I also had 5 periods of > 1 day when DNS was fried (i.e. couldn't do an ping of www.yahoo.com, but could of 204.71.200.75). When I called up tech support (after waiting for 1:30 ... that's an hour and a half, not a minute and a half) they tech asked me what DNS was!!!! I couldn't believe this. When I sent an e-mail to them, I never got a response back. Also, for 5 days I have to give myself an IP Address because their DHCP server was down... I waited on the phone for another 1:30 (hour-and-a-half) only to be told they would ship it off to level 2 tech support. I never got a call back. I called the level 2 tech support guys (amazing who you can get phone numbers for these days!) and they had never gotten the ticket. Uhhg! Now I'm with Telocity and it's a billion times faster and more reliable!

DSL service purchased at $24.95 /mo from Covad/Bignet through a special employer negotiated group rate. Response was quick and installation flawless. Two months ago, my service has degraded to abysmal. I typically am unable to connect for days, and when I do it is erratic and slow. Downloads often stall the browser.

I have repeatedly called tech support over the past several months, often waiting hours on hold. None of the tech advise worked and nobody has an answer to the problem.

A bargain is not a bargain if it does work. I'm back to cable.
