Note: That this is not a DSL Hook Up..............
I use these folks as a back up ISP, in the event my LAN takes a dive. They are only a 56k land line service and regularly hook up between 44-50K. I have had no bad experiences to report and I have subscribed to them for 4 years. I also use them as a primary for email inbound......Spam is extremely minimal and tech support is very strong. I pay them 9.95 a month lumped into a 24 month prepay. I have unlimited hours of use. I have a only a few disconnects. I have a stable connection.

The Ford/PeoplePC Model E program had a DSL offer(subsequently withdrawn in Jan due to isp problems) of 12-36 month 608/128 DSL or 144/144 service for $25/ month. I placed the order on 12-4 and was told installation could take 30-45 days. was emailed almost immediately confirming order and told would be contacted re installation. after straightening out address snafu order was initiated and initial appointment set up. due to another snafu missed covad tech who arrived as scheduled but he failed to contact me at work before coming as i had arranged thru his service center. after a couple other no shows he arrived and finished his thing in 30 minutes. Covad tech was very knowledgeable, convinced me to use ethernet modem instead of usb, have speedstream 5260, bignet branded enternet software, pppoe protocol, dynamic ip. Covad has already refunded my $198 installation cost, and bignet has billed me $81 for first 3 months. Since i started knowledgeless, i've used this site and a few others for self education. however, nothing i do seems to have any effect on speed. i average about 410 down 110 up and no amount of registry tweaking improves my results. Bignet tech support has been unable to help me increase my download speeds but the rep did tell me about speedguide.net. All in all compared to dial up service i'm more than satisfied but would like to achieve the advertized 608 speed.

I recently became a Peoplepc/Ford member and when they offered DSL at 24.99 I had an intrest. I Compared prices and when I found out that was really good and only having one phone line, my mom heartfuly agreed. I used the net ording form and every thing went good(10/27). The only problem I had was that Covad contacted me on 11/8 and said I had a problem with the line and SWB had to look at it again. I emailed them, 11/13 asked about the service, 11/14 recieved a responce that they are working on it, cool. The SWB guy came unannounced, but he was cool, we talked DSL service and when I mention the price he quickly asked about if it was available for him. I didn't think so. Well when that was situated I thought cool. On 11/22, I got a email stating the Covad guy would be there December 7 b/w 12 and 5, a day off work. On 11/29, I recieved and email form Shawn, confirming my install date and asking if a change is needed. Since every thing was peachy keen nothing did. The day before 12/6, I decided to move my computer to a new room, took an hour and then some more to figure out that my speaker wires to my DTT2500 5.1 system were switched. I got it all set up, just waiting for the guy to come tommrow. CHecking the Answering machine I notticed Shawn called, from a cell phone so I only got that he was comming tommrow to install it and he would be there b/w 12 and 5. That morning, it was a day off, I awoke around 11 to clean the house a little, I didn't expect the guy until 5, murphy's law. I get a call around 12:30 from shawn asking directions, I was still in my boxers. I gave him directons, he was only a few seconds away. I never got dressed so fast. When he arived he was nice, asking about phone lines and were it comes in and stuff. I didn't know much about the wireing the house, my dad did it and he is really creative with it too(he cant help he passed away a few months ago). We finnly figured out that the best place was by the jack that my computer was orginaly. We got every thing up and running execpt I wasn't billed out, it only took a few minutes fix that. Well today 12/9 every thing is fine and dandy.
2/26/01
So far so good. I haven't had much problems yet. There was a day when the network was down. The Tech people were kind enough to put a message on there tech support number.

I have been on the hunt for high speed service for some time (1 year) when I move to a very modern Chicago suburb you would think services like this would be available, but they werent. I tried every way possible up to a point of trying to change my phone # to a co that was closer to me than the one I had. Ameriwreck oh I mean ameritech actually gave me a number (that would cost me $300 + to get it) then they lost the order for it.
I called Big Net and spoke with a lovely lady there who made it her goal in life to get me dsl any dsl possible. When working with her, we finally got covad to deliver ISDL to my home and installation was flawless I get 139/138 most of the time. I did however lose my connection for a week because of again ameritech didnt connect my line drop from covad securely at the box in my back yard, once ameriwreck (sorry again) ameritech connected it the way the should have I have been up since. all I can say is thank you Big Net and the person at Big Net you know who you are. I had to send her flowers for all the effort!!!!
Thank you!

After the typical Bell Atlantic problems, and two Covad roll outs, all of which were very well co-ordinated by both Covad and Bignet, I was up and running. Although technical support can be hard to reach, most supervisors will try very hard to be approachable when the tier one people cannot help. One cannot expect, nor does one obviously receive, AT&T type hand-holding, user newsgroups, &c, but, on the other hand, the very top people in the organisation are responsive, and take service and personal suggestions very seriously.
My usual connexion is about 5oo kbps, on a purchased 628, download, and the CTO told me personally that this will improve, as will high values for first hops, when the new servers are installed. He did not deny, nor excuse, but told the truth, told me why, and told me when things will improve, on an already more than acceptable service.
It appears to me that the quality of tech support is no worse than ususal, and, I must say, certain things even the most experienced user forgets to check, the support people do not know, RWIN registry settings, etc, but, most of my personal contacts have been willing to learn, ask supervisors, and listen.
Since I had a real, and legitimate problem with the first roll-out, Bignet offered me a free temporary DUN connexion, just to help. As a side note, their POP mail is not behind a firewall, so one can retrieve post from third party internet mail services such as yahoo, an enormous convenience for those who travel.
It is a small company, ready to grow, and trying to push to keep up. Personally, I have no problem unresolved, and, always, the reolution was courteous and friendly.
Like all smaller ISPS, they require more news server connexions to their realm, and less overbooking, and/or more server speed. I am assured these things are in the works. Bell Atlantic had a recent moratorium on DSL installs in NYC, because of CO problems, etc, and, given the nature and scope of these problems,
the service from Bignet functions extremely well.
After a few months of decent service, line quality became a issue, and the tech support at bignet, particularly Andy M, who spent countless hours in co-op calls with Covad, and never gave up until I had a clean line, was exemplary. Instead of giving up, he stuck by the customer, and, now, on 4 novembre or so, I have a really clean line, and no outages(knock on wood.) They are undergoing reorganisation, and have farmed out basic type tech support to a subcontractor, which leaves engineers like Andy free to help with the real problems. They took my side in the battle with Bell Atlantic, and we finally won.
Throughout the time, they never gave up, and, I think many others would have dropped the cause. I have to say, as well, that Andy, Ron, and the whole crew never lost their sense of perpective, or humour. Now, all is well, my line is clean, and speeds are as advertised. It seems to me that the mettle of a company is not how they react when all goes well, but, how they support when it falls apart. They have gotten their act together, and I appreciate it.

So far I am very happy with my install (Ameritech)(Covad), reliability, tech support. Overall I give them a A- or B+. When it is possible for me to upgrade to a faster DSL service (144/144 now), I plan to and will probably go with Bignet if the price is right. My service is $49 month. I am using a FlowPoint 144 router/bridge. My rebate from Covad was actually HIGHER than what I was billed for from BigNet.

BigNet did a good job of informing me of what I'd get for my money (144/144 IDSL @$49/mo with free install). I had somewhat of an edge because I did all the inside wiring and I am familiar with the terms & procedures. Anyway, PacBell really dropped the ball; missed appointments and somehow informed Covad that it was ready to go BEFORE THEY EVEN INSTALLED THE PHYSICAL LINE TO MY HOUSE! The Covad guy came out and said, "OK I'm ready to install, where does the line come in to your house?" and I had to report that it did not! 2 months later, PacBell finally got it installed & got the loading coils removed, etc. . . .
But once that got it all straightened out, it was a snap for the Covad guy to set up the Bridge (it's actually a FlowPoint Router, but it's config'ed in Bridge mode and they won't tell me the p/w; I suppose I can re-set it but I already had a LinkSys router, so I'm just going from the DSL Bridge, into the Router, into my 5-port switch, and throughout my house!). The installer was in & out in less than 1 hour, he said it was the easiest install he's ever done. All he had to do was plug it in, run a config script, check that it was getting an IP (Dynamic), did some quick surfing, and that was it. It ain't 1.5Mbps, but it's a far sight better than dialup!
I'm T + 2 days now, very happy so far . . .

I have been trying to keep a fair report going since the day I called to sign up for Big net. My neighbor had called me when he finally got his service up and running(from another co.) and told me that the Covad installer said I should try Big Net.I called and got friendly efficient service.
Then the waiting game started...Ameritech came out the first time and just did something at the pole instead of running a new line. Then about 2 weeks later they came back out and started to do some more work, when they left that day (which was on a Thursday) They left my phone line open. This left me with NO TELEPHONE service! When I called, I had to wait on hold for about 30 mins. We were told that they were sorry, but they couldn't come back until next monday. They didn't come out until Tuesday, after I made another call in to them. That really ticked me off! About a week after that they finished all the outside line work. Covad then came to the house hooked up the router but there was still an inbalance in the line. Ameritech came out one last time and now that part was alright.
Called Big Net just about a half hour ago and they walked me through the rest of my set-up and helped me get an email account up and running. The tech was a man named Jason and he really deserves a pat on the back as he walked me through very patiently. So far, I can honestly say that Big Net has lived up to there end of the bargin.

I live in Kentwood, MI, and I signed up for Bignet IDSL at the end of May. Ameritech dropped the ball once in getting the line run to the house, but I was quickly rescheduled and within three weeks I had DSL installed. The installer was great, they didn't even charge the $80 an hour charge they are supposed to for inside wiring (my computer room didn't have a true phone jack connection). He got my DSL connection up and running in less than an hour, with inside wiring and the works to do. He was also nice enough to set up my PC for me (although I know they aren't required to do this).
The connection has been at good speeds for IDSL, 16.3KB downloads. The flowpoint 144 modem has been a dream. I have experienced some brief downtimes related to the DHCP server, however I found spending some time releasing and renewing my IP usually gets the connection back in a fairly short amount of time. This has occurred less than ten times since I started. Twice there were significant periods of no connection, or no useful connection. In July there was a scheduled period. And once in August the IDSL was at speeds of approximately .7KB from a Thursday night until the next Monday morning.
True to other posts in this forum, tech support is a real hassle. I call them up and tell them about my problem and they say "yep, not really much you can do about it, we know about it and are working on it". They also have a tendency to give false information. The connection was always going to be fixed by the next morning... several mornings went by.
Also, my bank is changing card numbers on me and I need to change the card to which my DSL is billed to. I've called three times now, leaving voicemails, and have yet to successfully change my card over (I am still in my first three months prepaid, so I haven't even been billed since the original setup bill). Also, when inquiring as to my webspace, the guy on the phone gave it to me frankly. He was just in the backup call center without any real ability to check on that information. _ALL_ of my tech support messages sent through the bignet.net website which are supposed to be always answered within 12-24 hours have not been answered AT ALL.
Overall, service has been fair. Support stinks (I finally gave up on my dream to get my ISP web space and am paying for a web host) and uptime is ok overall. After going through troubles with @home, this is nothing new.
