Contract price not specified. - (12 month contract)
about 3 days CenturyTel "Fast order/install, Contract optional, 10mb/s (actual speed faster!), Install Package in the mail!" "Greedy Tech support.. wouldn't give me simple answer regarding use of LinkSys router without add'l service contract" "So far, better than expected experience!"

Called on Tuesday, package containing router and install CD arrived the next day! Service installer came by the house twice two days later to make sure it was all hooked up correctly. Plugged everything in, all worked great immediately. Only problem I had was with CenturyTel's support trying to get my Linksys router connected. The Westfall modem CenturyTel uses shares the default IP Address range used by Linksys, so the Router/Modem tripped over each other. When I called support they could have easily answered that question, but their policy was to tell me they couldn't support 3rd party devices - when all they had to do was tell me to change the IP address range of the router. Thank goodness for the Internet.. Service works great, better than expected! Speeds faster than 10mb/s. »www.speedtest.net/result/569774491.png

$40 per month about 3 days CenturyTel "Reliable connection" "Latency and speed vary horribly depending on location." "Not bad being pretty much the only option for this area"

Not to bad in this area. I have had CenturyTel DSL when living in an other part of Colorado and it was horrible. In this area things seem to work pretty good. There are wild swings in bandwith depending on which server you test from. The ironic thing is I get better bandwith and latency to Chicago then I do Denver. Which makes no sense to me at all. Advertised speed in 10mbps/800kbps. I observe that I get anywhere from 2mbps to about 8mbps and upload speeds are about 720kbps

Columbia,Boone,MO
$100 per month- (24 month contract)
about 45 days CenturyTel "It's the ONLY service available." "advertised 1.5M, due to antiquated phone lines lucky at 764/132!" "Will jump at the first better offer that becomes available!"
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money:

When Centurytel decided to offer HSI ,just 3 miles outside of the city limits of Columbia, MO (my home) it was advertised as 1.5MB service. Was never able to attain and hold that speed due to antiquated phone lines that couldn't handle the load, as explained by the SIXTH "Lineman' who called the company and had service turned down to 765kbps! Also only 132kbps upload. If I use in early AM, I can sometimes actually watch some streaming without pausing for buffering. As this is the only thing better than Dial-up at present it will have to do, but; I will surely jump on the next best thing to come this way.

Orting,Pierce,WA
$39 per month- (24 month contract)
about 15 days CenturyTel- CLEC party: CenturyTel
"Very Reliable, Quick Setup, Tech Support and Sales Very Repsonsive" "Took 20 days from order to success" "I'm extremely happy and pleased with my service."

I ordered DSL service from CenturyTel. I am located in Orting, WA, and thought DSL would never be available here. When I started looking for a new internet Dialup service I decided to call my phone provider. Out of a whim I asked if DSL was available, and I was told that it was. I was shocked! I immediately ordered it, and was told it would take 10 days for them to check my eligibility to my home, and then send me a contract to review and sign. After signing and sending it back I was called within days, and was given a hook up date that was 6 days away. Three days later I got the router I ordered from them, a Westell webshare router. On the day promised I got home from work, and the service was working perfectly. The advertised speed is 512Kbps down, and 256kbps up. I tested my speed here on DSL Reports, and I get approximately 420Kbps down, and 206kbps up. I was told that I am 7,000 from the CO, so I am extremely pleased.
Update: I've had my Centurytel DSL for a year now, and I'm still pleased. Any problems I experienced early on were resolved professionally. My neighbor recently signed up for CenturyTel DSL as well. She had problems too, and the company diligently worked at solving the problem. It turned out she had a bad NIC card in her computer. Once it was replaced she was online in minutes.
Update (as of 12/29/02): After almost 2 years, I am still extremely happy with Centurytel DSL. I was having routine drops about a month ago, and was getting very perturbed. However, after a week of this my modem failed completely. Once I replaced it my service has been rock solid. I would highly recommend this service!
Update (as of 10/4/03): I am now moving to Comcast HSI. Centurytel has been great when the only competion was dial up. But cable internet is so much faster, and for my gamer kids, the lag is much less than we have been experiencing.

Gig Harbor,Pierce,WA
$49 per month about 20 days CenturyTel- CLEC party: CenturyTel
"good for downloading music and browsing internet" "gaming" "Do not purchase this dsl if you are a gamer."

Horrible for gaming
I live in Gig Harbor and have been subscribed to ctel for about 2 years. The only reason i am subscribed is because its the only dsl provider in the area. If a new provider came in the area i would garentee that ctel would loose half its customers. Why? Because the dsl they provide is absolutly horrible for gaming. The first hop is never below 60 meaning you can never get below a 60 ping, but most the time when gaming i get 100-300 ping. I also get many connection problems. I know of at least 10 other subscribers with the same problem. I have done everything possible to tell ctel to fix it but they say "the problem isnt bad enough" and "a 200 ping is not that bad" which is false. If you plan on doing any gaming i highly discurage use of centurytel internet. I am fed up with there horrible service. I know better ping times are possible because about 2 months ago i was getting pings from 12-25 but now everyone's in the harbor turned bad. this is the truth, i have no reason to lie, i highly discurage paying money for this dsl if you are into gaming. They are making no effort to fix this.

$40 per month- (24 month contract)
about 30 days "fast as all get out, 512k upload speed, 256 down, uses PPPoE, have dynamic IP" "have had several outages" "will take it since it is only service available right now"

ADSL is a god send for me, since I like to browse the web for mp3's. Only problem is that once I got used to the speed, I started to want more. Also, have experienced several network outages, the most recent lasting 8 days and counting. Perhaps outage is not a correct term, more like nettwork slowdown, where my download speed is only 24kbps, but upload speed is in the 200kbps range. Technical support so far has been excellent though. I have two computers networked through a hub, with access to the dsl on each computer. Am not running proxy server, so only 1 pc is on-line at a time, but his has posed no prblems. Install was simple - use PPPoE with a dynamic ip address.
