AOL Plus service from America Online . No real bps promised , just 50 times faster than a 28.8 modem.Monthly price for AOL Plus is just $19.95 on top of the $26.95 for unlimited access or $46.90 per month and if you use your checking instead of your credit card there's a $5.00 check charge. I ordered AOL Plus in Mid-July and recieved my modem and software the first week in August. My line though wasn't DSL ready until the first of September. The modem is a Speedstream 4060 USB modem which came with 4 line filters and phone & USB cords . Installing the hardware & software was easy enough but there was a conflict with my SB live soundcard software. And I also can't get it to work with Windows 98 SE upgrade software. PPPoE is the protocol. just tried new Efficient Networks modem drivers and they work a little better but still no SB live or W98 SE .Download speed is on average 590K bps and upload speed on average is 90K bps. That's measured from this site . My ping is 146 currently which has improved from 170 6 months ago. Just like anything there's good and bad things about my connection . Good speed by sacraficing updated software.I'm sure as time goes on the software will get more compatible and things will be boring again.

I have AOL Plus with Bell Atlantic, and at first it was pathetic. I got nothing higher than 40kbps. Then after scores of hourst of AOL Tech Support i got it upt to 130kbps. Now after tweeks from dslreports.com i have 420kbps, but this is still not as fast as i think it should be. AOL says that the average is i believe 608kbps, but i am 3000 feet from the main CO, i should be getting lightning speed, right? Or does AOL put a limit on my downstream bandwidth? Some of the tech peaople said it could be my computer that is the problem, i have it tweeked and have the DefaultRcvWindow in my system registry thing set to the huge setting (131070), that is giving me the fastest speeds. Could someone please help me out with what is going on. I live in Baltimore City, MD. Should i just switch to Bell Atlantic DSL direct? Would that be any faster? Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the SpeedStream 3060 modem with updated drivers, no device conflicts.

I tried to use AOL with my MediaOne Roadrunner. RoadRunner is always reliable but not when i connect to AOL using it. I ordered the 1500/300 service. When i am on AOL the most I can get is 1160/15.......yes FIFTEEN. Thats how much AOL's proxy's slow down your upload speed. They say a good connection is if you can get 80% out of it.......well 15 is 5% of 300! When i don't use AOL i can get speeds up to 1470/260. AOL is also one of the most unreliable services i have ever used. It signs you off just because it feels like it and opening web pages is a pain in the backside. I have a 3Com External Cable Modem and Ethernet Card and believe me it is not the equippment causing the problem. I know alot of other cable users who get 10-20kbps (1.2-2.5K/S) up and only around 60% down when using AOL , and dramattically faster when not on AOL. If you have a cable modem and you want to use AOL ..... DONT. Use netscape, believe me you aint missing anything. I have a Dynamic IP which doesnt matter because AOL gives you your own separate Static IP when you use the service. The technical support is horrible. Every time you call up with a problem they tell you that it was something you downloaded and tell you to reinstall AOL. Its like they are programmed to say it. I have had AOL since i got a computer in Aug. 99 and i have had nothing but trouble with it. Yea maybe they do have a fairly large selection of games and keywords (when they feel like loading) aren't bad, but other then that its all bad. The websites are a pain to load because of the slow upload speeds making it an inability to send fast requests to servers. If i were you i would stay away from AOL and just browse with netscape or IE. Also stay away from AOL's BYOB where you can use AOL with DSL modems for $5 a month. That is a big joke its as unreliable as the real service. Use netscape messenger for your mail and you should be satisfied. If you need too even use Outlook Express which isn't half as bad as AOL's Mail Service.

    Here's my AOL Plus Experience!

After reading several articles about broadband access, I decided to upgrade my
current dial up account with AOL to AOL's DSL internet service called AOL
Plus. Initially I had my doubts about this service because a partnership
between AOL and Bell Atlantic, (my local phone company who also offered DSL)
service was too good to be true. And I read all these complaints about
service availability and wait period. But still I thought I would give it a
try. I placed my order last April 21, 2000. Three months later and more than
15 calls to customer service, I was still waiting for my DSL service.
Meanwhile, AOL has already charged my 150.00 for the modem and 100.00 for the
service activation. Halfway, I spoke with a representative (Tammy) who told
me that Bell Atlantic never received the order to activate my service so she
had to re-issue it and even write out a short note to her supervisor about my
situation. In the end, the best thing that AOL's customer service
representatives could tell me was that my service request was still open and
that they really could not tell me specifically what was wrong. Because
another dept. handles the requests and that they (Tech Support) had no direct
link with Bell Atlantic. In the end I cancelled my order and ordered service
through Bell Atlantic instead. I really did not want to give up my AOL email
account, (this is why I waited 3 mos. before canceling) but it was either
this or be stuck with 45 kbs (max speed I got from AOL in my area) access.
Bell atlantic promised me that I would be up and running by Aug. 8, 2000.
Hopefully this experience will be nothing like what i had with AOL. But then
iv'e been reading a lot of bad reviews about them lately. hopefully theyre
not that bad in my area.

A few years ago I switched to a cable connection from a DSL connection. It proved to be much more dependable.......less outages and higher speeds. Optimum Online recently came out with something called "Boost", which increased the speed even higher, at a cost of about $12.95 above the $44.95 that I'm already paying. I honestly don't feel it's worth the added expense, so I'm going to go back to their normal service because in the real world I don't notice this additional speed.

"The data connection link was terminated by the remote computer" seems to be the most common message to an AOL Plus sabscriber. While the tech support people at AOL seem knowlegeble, I got an interesting responce to my email in which I asked about the status of my problem ticket and service status in general, it was something like "try calling the AOL Plus support number Once A Week until it begins to work." Well my service did start to work today although it kept on turning off, it did take about 4 weeks for it to work from the day it was supposed to be activated. Well for now it seems to be fine about 450kbps down. I just hope that it stays up.
