Great Deal when it works out
AOL Plus doesn't work as advertised
this is a good deal if you are VERY patient and are willing to wait as log as it takes for the service to work

"The data connection link was terminated by the remote computer" seems to be the most common message to an AOL Plus sabscriber. While the tech support people at AOL seem knowlegeble, I got an interesting responce to my email in which I asked about the status of my problem ticket and service status in general, it was something like "try calling the AOL Plus support number Once A Week until it begins to work." Well my service did start to work today although it kept on turning off, it did take about 4 weeks for it to work from the day it was supposed to be activated. Well for now it seems to be fine about 450kbps down. I just hope that it stays up.

Bell Atlantic Area

If you are in the BA area you will always experience outages until BA fixes their equipment. Mostly all of the DSL providers run into the same problem in the BA area. Customers need to realize this and not blame the DSL provider. I never knew that AOL was in the game now. What are their rates and contracts??

I would BYOA...

I wouldn't go though AOL to get DSL service. I have PacBell DSL right now and I joined AOL though the "Bring Your Own Access" (BYOA) plan which is $9.95 a month. I pay the PacBell DSL bill ($39.95) plus the AOL bill ($9.95) per month and it seems to work out good that way. AOL doesn't offer DSL access though them in my area so I joined PacBell and then sign onto AOL and get DSL speeds. AOL Plus auto-downloaded to my computer when I started using DSL with it and the "plus" features seem to work great for me.

I have just been converted from a beta test site to AOL Plus service. It
took a month to get a time of install which was a bit long without service
since they pulled the plug on the beta testing at the end of the year.
Trying to get confirmation of the pending install date proved difficult since
no one at AOL could find the records of my account on frequent phone calls
the day before install, but finally someone knew where to ask and I got
confirmation. The Pac Bell installers came when promised and the install
went as usual-- a few difficulties 1) the new splitterless system discovered
an old telephone jack causing difficulty which was not noticed of course when
the splitter eliminated it from the data stream, luck prevailed and the
problem jack was not being used so they left it hanging open, 2) the AOL
software delivered with the modem is necessary even though it says it is
loading AOL 5.0 which, if you already have 5.0, you might believe it not
necessary to reinstall.

Unlike with the beta service where you had a static IP address you now have a
dynamic and have to long into AOL so that establishing a DSL connection takes
valuable time. Download time are OK but the main problem is the latency
involved in pings which amounts to 150 plus ms just to get to the first hop
to AOL. This will be problematical in game play which is the main use of the
system. Yet to be resolved issues are how to configure NAT with the AOL USB
DSL modem.

Hi,
AOL DSL uses Bell Atlantic in my area. I got set up more or less in 2 weeks
from the time I ordered the service. The first thing is they did not send me
the AOL Plus CD in the startup package when they sent me the modem. So I had
to wait another 7 days for that to come. In the meantime I installed the
SpeedStream 4060 external USB modem. Once I had the CD come to me, I tried
signing on and would keep getting the error "The data connection link was
terminated by the remote computer". Called AOL tech-support on a Sunday. They
made me reinstall a few things like the AOL Adapter and the Ivasion Winpoet
2.0 software and then put in a line problem report and said they would hear
something within the next 3 days.
Well next morning when I tried again, I was able to login!!!
I have tweaked the registry setting for DefaultRcvWindow based on sometings I
read at dslreports.com I have been averaging 450Kb-500Kb/s download. At times
I hang when "Establishing DSL connection..." in the begining of AOL, but then
restarting DSL from the Advanced Options of the SpeedStream modem status,
usually reconnects me.

I have been using this for a week now. More or less happy with the
performance. Theres howver one thing which I hate which is that at times,
even when I try to go to a fast site like yahoo.com, it will sit there with
an hourglass and then take upto a minute. Or if I am trying to download a
brokerage research report from multex.com from the browser with AOL, it will
take a long time and then suddenly come up with the web page. This does not
happen if I go through Internet explorer outside AOL.

Does anyone know why or is anyone else experiencing this?

AOL???? you're kidding, right?

It's AOL. Despite being the largest ISP in this country, no matter how you connect, their service is deplorable. Use Netscape or IE, dump AOL altogether! You'll be even happier with your DSL service!

Yeah, I got that problem too

Hi, I got DSL through another ISP, but I still have an AOL account that I connect to regularly (my wife wants to keep it). I never have problems connecting to AOL features, but often have problems when I go to the World Wide Web. There are two reasons that I have found for this. The first, is that even with your bandwidth, you have to process through AOL servers that get bogged down with increased weekend usage. There is nothing you can do about this. The second reason has to do with how long your computer is on. Since AOL is really a modified version of Internet Explorer, there is a lot of common code with Windows 95/98. I think that the modifications cause errors in Windows that makes it very difficult to connect to the Web. When I have problems with AOL, I often restart my computer if it has been on a couple days. Sometime all the problems disappear. I really don't know that much about Windows and Internet explorer, so I could be very wrong.

AOL.....CRAWLING WITH TECHNOLOGY

The other respondents are right. AOL connects very slowly. I went all through the various tech departments and the bottom line is their browser just won't support DSL speeds. Netscape is fastest with IE a close second. I'm using the new imac DV SE and can not connect any faster than the low 300's on AOL whereas I can connect at 1.1 with Netscape. Guess who just cancelled their AOL account!

Hey, It works for me!

Hey, I don't have any problems with AOL Plus. I live in the 95129 zip code area. My free DSL kit (free because of the promotion they have)came 8 days after I placed the order. After a quite simple installation I tryed signing on to the AOL Plus but after getting stuck on "Establishing DSL Connection" for about 2 minutes it would say something about the remote machine stoped the connection. After calling their knowlagable Tech Support I found out I had to wait for another 4 days before the phone company, Pacific Bell, activated DSL for my phone line. Now, my average download speed is about 400 to 700 kbs/second and when I play Unreal Tournament my average ping is about 60 to 100 on good servers which is completly lag free. Very big hop from 56k.

Re: AOL.....CRAWLING WITH TECHNOLOGY

I don't see how the AOL browser could be the problem. All of the 32 bilt AOL clients use IE version 5. If IE is second best for DSL I don't see how that would make a difference. I have used AOL and compared it with other ISP's and have come to the conclusion that there are a number of factors that can cause a slow connection. For example, line noise, the number of users logged on the service at one time, your computers free resources and so on. To be perfectly honest, I would have to say that AOL is one of the faster services out there.

I'd have to agree that although people give AOL to much flack they are simple to use. If you have to call tech support for AOL you aren't much of a computer expert. I called once three years ago and turned out my modem was fried from a lightning strike, so they couldn't help me anyway. I've never had one problem with AOL other than three years ago it was hard to get a connection due to high volume of users dialing up. Hmm, well, once I got kicked off of AOL for disrupting a room, but hey I was just giving back to the guy what he gave me, and they terminated my account, I guess honesty in this case didn't pay off, because I told them I did it and they said "see ya". Those are my only complaints, but they are not technical problems. I am fairly sure that most customer anguish in using AOL as their ISP comes from "user error". and hey, if you don't like it, get off of it and don't knock it till you try it as well.
that's my two cents

I have AOL DSL service with verizon as the Telco.
I have win 98 SE on my laptop. For some reason whenever I use Aol, i am unable to browse with IE or for that matter run ipconfig to look at the IP addresses and other info.
Whenever I run ipconfig it stops responding and I have to kill it.
Has anyone seen a similar problem?

Thanks,
Wildcats.
