I think AOL is the best product out there for the internet. I think it offer way more then any other ISP Could!!! They may not be the best on something but they offer great products. I use ALL AOL products. I think they offer better content then any other ISP could, you don't see COMHELL or MSSUCKS offering those things? NO WAY. And if you people don't like AOL or hate there service get away from them then?

basically, aol is for people who are not computer-savvy. grandma would have no problem using it. theres no such thing as a "power-user" on aol. you are blocked from doing so many things, its not funny.
on the other hand, as a company. aol is great. the support is wonderful and the service is good.
so it depends on hat you want. if you want to check ur email and surf the web, call aol. if you want to use FTP, set up a web server, or even know your actual IP address, look elsewhere.

After being persuaded by my daughter, I gave AOL byoa a shot. Im pretty impressed. It has gotten much better since last time I had AOL . Now Im on comcast with AOL byoa. Im in the trial, not sure If im going to stay but my daughter loves the KOL service so I just may keep it.
Update: I decided to keep the AOL BYOA service. My daughter really likes it, and I got the rate to $9.95 per month. Im enjoying the simplicity of AOL. I dont use the firewall or antivirus that comes with it. Mcafee products never seem to work correctly for me. Great content and appreciate the parental controls.

I ordered AOL DSL the summer of `01. I wasn't the one to order, but by the time I wanted to cancel it was too late. When I got it, I got the USB modem, the actiontec. Despite what most people say or think about it, the modem is fine for everyday use, but if you leave it on 24/7, it will eventually overheat, which is what happened to me. Then I got a westell. Through Verizon, I got excellent speeds (708/112--> 730/136- later on). I am also a gamer, so ping's and connection reliability are extremely important to me. I have not seen much downtime from my DSL at all, and the PEAK slow speeds and pings only happened for a week or so, when they were maintaining my line. Nowadays, people all around me with RR are getting pings of 180-220, and this is something that I could not stand. When I'm playing games, every millisecond will count. People who say that AOL plus is horrible, and that you shouldn't get it. I agree. Before, when the price was only 43 dollars for DSL + unlimited dial up, I'd say it was a great deal and that everyone should get it. Now that we are paying $55 dollars for some bloatware + something where you have to login, I don't think it's worth its money.
-----------------------UPDATE-------------------------------
AOL is great now- they allow pppoe (which means routers, ps2, + xbox), plus my connection hasn't been down yet. I keep my ratings the same.
-----------------------UPDATE-------------------------------
AOL DSL is not worth it, with 1.5/128 verizon being available for $30 in my area. I could buy byoa and verizon at the same time and still save money. On the other hand, my connection is stable

I love the connection I recieve with DSL... no downtimes or slowdowns at peak hours because it isn't hooked up to any other people. However, it is so expensive in my area just for DSL to compete with cable so I will soon be switching. But overall I have had no problems with anything that has happened with my broadband. I got the speeds I ordered and I was activated in a timely manner. Nothing to complain about though! Right now I use PPPoE to connect without the AOL software, so it is all good.

I'm now a happy covad customer thanks to how horrible AOL was. I was one of the first people to get there DSL a good few years back. I still remember when I asked about the speed I was told "AOL does not cap your bandwith", then later as AOL evolved there bs I was told "AOL does not cap your line it is your telco Verizon please get in touch with them to ask you to uncap your line", then telco tells me currently AOL is leasing a 640/90 line and basically they are the ones that choose the speed. So yes the telco caps you based on what AOL pays them. There supports even worse, sometimes your lucky enough to get connected to a US call center that speaks english but most of there call centers are in India - I have nothing against this it's a capatalist government and they need to stay competitive however as it is AMERICA online it should be a requirement for them to atleast have good english. The tech's in India maybe very good and caring tech's but there is a language barrier. I timed it taking almost 15 minutes just to get my screen name etc right. Most of the techs I must say have no idea what they are doing. They are reading out of a manual. However they do hand out free service. For almost the last year that I had AOL DSL we were running on free service because we had problems multiple simultaneous logins. Just called every month said they would look into it and fix it within 72 hours. It was never fixed and we had about 12 months of free service. I was also a beta tester and although I am not aloud to tell about the beta program, if for some reason you do have to get AOL DSL sign up for beta it is the best chance at any real official support you will get. They finally enable PPPoE at the end of my AOL DSL which is a good first step, but no POP3 or SMTP access is a pain especially interms of switching emails and keeping your address book. It seems that any pay email service should have those basics. There dsl network is also way oversaturated and when you sign onto there service as I understand it you create VPN which tunnels all your traffic through there VA headquarters which was fine for me where I live but if you live in California you may not be so lucky with latency. All things included you can get a MUCH better service for much less... Look into Cyberonic, Covad, Megapath, Speakeasy or many local DSL ISPs (although they may be slightly pricey the level of personalized support tends to make up for it).

After suffering with AOL dial-up for over 4 years, we finally became eligible to get a good deal on SBC Yahoo! DSL. For $26.95 we get 384-1500kbps download with 128kbps upload. AOL charged us $21.95 for unlimited dial-up.
On November 15, 2003, canceling our AOL account was not easy. I had to repeat my reasons for cancelling the account over 10 times, and still was pressured to keep it. AOL finally agreed to give us 3 free months of service. "I do not want 3 free months of service", I said, "I want to cancel the account completely." They finally agreed to cancel it, but it would not take effect until November 23, 2003. I wasn't happy with this, but I agreed.
On November 24, 2003, I verified our AOL account was canceled by trying to log in. My login was rejected, because the account was deactivated. This was a good sign.
I get no bill from AOL for the next month. Then... my January credit card bill comes in. I see a monthly charged for AOL on it. I call AOL. They say my account was reactivated on December 6, 2003, and was used for about 4 minutes during December.
I tell them I did not reactivate the account, I do not have AOL software on my computer, and to please remove the charge from my credit card. They refuse to remove the complete $21.95 charge, but agree to discount it to half, because only a few minutes were used. This is better than nothing, but I am not happy.
I call AOL's billing department, again. They will not budge. They keep telling me the only way to reactivate the account is from the main screen name with the correct password, and that it was done on December 6, 2003, and that it must have been me doing it. I, again, tell them I did not activate it, and no one else know's my password. Now, I'm really unhappy, because I feel they are calling me a liar. They just repeat themselves, and refuse to let me speak to any one else regarding the matter. I ask them to forward me to the cancellation department, but they refuse saying it won't make a difference. Unbelievable.
I call AOL's cancellation department, again. They also will not budge, and are a bit confused about why I'm calling them, because they already cancelled my account. They also would not let me speak to any one else regarding the matter. I tell them I will definitely make sure I do not recommend AOL to my friends and family. They laugh and say they have heard that a lot lately. I said I was not surprised.
Finally, I dispute the charge on my credit card, which my credit card company is most helpful in processing.
AOL seems to want to do whatever it takes to keep whatever money they collect whether it's a bogus charge or not.
Oh, and did I mention that they offered 3 months free service when we canceled the first time with them? Why would they start charging only days into the 3 month free service period even if we did reactivate it. We didn't reactivate it, by the way.
I highly recommend a EarthLink dial-up and SBC Yahoo! DSL, by the way. In comparision, they are both extremely helpful in resolving technical as well as billing problems.
