After suffering with AOL dial-up for over 4 years, we finally became eligible to get a good deal on SBC Yahoo! DSL. For $26.95 we get 384-1500kbps download with 128kbps upload. AOL charged us $21.95 for unlimited dial-up.

On November 15, 2003, canceling our AOL account was not easy. I had to repeat my reasons for cancelling the account over 10 times, and still was pressured to keep it. AOL finally agreed to give us 3 free months of service. "I do not want 3 free months of service", I said, "I want to cancel the account completely." They finally agreed to cancel it, but it would not take effect until November 23, 2003. I wasn't happy with this, but I agreed.

On November 24, 2003, I verified our AOL account was canceled by trying to log in. My login was rejected, because the account was deactivated. This was a good sign.

I get no bill from AOL for the next month. Then... my January credit card bill comes in. I see a monthly charged for AOL on it. I call AOL. They say my account was reactivated on December 6, 2003, and was used for about 4 minutes during December.

I tell them I did not reactivate the account, I do not have AOL software on my computer, and to please remove the charge from my credit card. They refuse to remove the complete $21.95 charge, but agree to discount it to half, because only a few minutes were used. This is better than nothing, but I am not happy.

I call AOL's billing department, again. They will not budge. They keep telling me the only way to reactivate the account is from the main screen name with the correct password, and that it was done on December 6, 2003, and that it must have been me doing it. I, again, tell them I did not activate it, and no one else knows my password. Now, I'm really unhappy, because I feel they are calling me a liar. They just repeat themselves, and refuse to let me speak to any one else regarding the matter. I ask them to forward me to the cancellation department, but they refuse saying it won't make a difference. Unbelievable.

I call AOL's cancellation department, again. They also will not budge, and are a bit confused about why I'm calling them, because they already cancelled my account. They also would not let me speak to any one else regarding the matter. I tell them I will definitely make sure I do not recommend AOL to my friends and family. They laugh and say they have heard that a lot lately. I said I was not surprised.

Finally, I dispute the charge on my credit card, which my credit card company is most helpful in processing.

AOL seems to want to do whatever it takes to keep whatever money they collect whether it's a bogus charge or not.

Oh, and did I mention that they offered 3 months free service when we canceled the first time with them? Why would they start charging only days into the 3 month free service period even if we did reactivate it. We didn't reactivate it, by the way.

I highly recommend a EarthLink dial-up and SBC Yahoo! DSL, by the way. In comparison, they are both extremely helpful in resolving technical as well as billing problems.

same here

A year ago or so we picked up one of the "Free 1700 hrs" or something of AOL from the Hotel Counter (like you see at stores and everywhere else). Used it all the hotel, and thats all. A couple months later, we called to cancel it, and stayed on the phone for half an hour while we explained to the man WHY we wanted to cancel it and if we would sign up again. This is obviously why they don't have a cancel account link on their website.

I know this kind of sounds like we were cheating them, but putting a disc with 1700 hours free in a hotel lobby for people to use on a vacation and expecting us to keep the service, they should probably try to find someway else to advertise.

Re: same here

We had the same nightmare with AOL dial up. We had paid for a year subscription back when we bought our first computer, and planned on changing to something else when the year was up. I cancelled, went one day over by logging back in, and was billed for another YEAR.

After getting nowhere with the "customer service", I gave up and handed the matter over to my then very pregnant and irritable wife. The matter was handled in short order after that.

LESSON LEARNED- 1)If momma aint happy, no one is, and 2)AOL is to the internet what Velveeta is to cheese.

I cancelled my AOL account about 4 months ago. Just the other day, i find a charge on my credit card for 3 months of AOL. I never reinstalled that aweful excuse for an ISP on my new Emachines computer or any other com i used. I call AOL and they say exactly what everybody else was saying before. I don't know how people can get charged for AOL if it's already cancelled and never used after. I am certainly never using AOL ever again. Thank god Comcast had a good deal for me and their new 3mb down, just hope they get to upgrading their 250k up.

I imagine that a HUGE percentage of the profit they make comes directly from people who gave up fighting them. "Ok, fine you win...by the way when is version 9.9 coming out? tomorrow? Great. And 10.2 a week later, gotcha."

Same deal for me.... same BS tactics... except that on each charge I disputed immediately withthe CC company. I understnad there was a class action suit brought against AOL in Ohio fosr these tactics.... they eventually sent me a threatening letter... I made it cear that not only was I never going to pay the bill... that I would now, never miss an opportunity to reveal how crappy they are... ethically chanllenged at the least. I finally got into a screaming match asking what they did not understand about the priro conversation... they got testy then offered me three free months... A##holes

You're not alone. I went through pretty much the same thing, but a much shorter duration. I got one of those disk's (floppy's even) and installed AOL Version 2 or 3. I kept trying to cancel by phone but they'd always talk me into another month. I think I only paid for one month out of the year I was with them. I finally found an address in SLC Utah (why there? ) and snail mailed them that I was no longer using the account and to stop billing on a date set a month in advance. They complied; I feel I got away easy.

It was so long ago I was using Windows 3.1 (remember that!)

Hello:
Aol makes it pretty simple to cancel, keyword cancel tells you to either call in or snail mail write in or fax in,I would say that is pretty easy.
But most dont read that or bother to just want to blame someone else cause they didnt bother,I have been an Aol customer for years and found the people who work there polite and friendly and I now use Aol through my high speed.
Yes they ask why you want to cancel,as a customer of many yrs, those people have a job to do just like you they go to work each day.
I pay for the service and it is cheating them if you put in one free trial after another just so you get free service, its called stealing. Please remember when you call in Aol there is a guy or gal on the other end of the phone, just doing his or her job.So please next time you go on Aol find keyword "Lighten up"

AOL wouldnt be in business if they didnt have loyal customers, and I'm sure they have many like yourself. I doubt anyone here wishes ill will towards any "guy or gal" personally, but I think this topic and the people who are sharing horror stories are directing thier anger towards a company who uses a policy of giving people the run around in order to keep them from cancelling. Speaking of guys and gals just doing thier job, just because they are employed does not give them the right to treat people they way I was treated. (Many hours on the phone, trying to be patient, speaking to a "supervisor" who eventually stated "there is nothing I can do for you, just pay the bill." I am sorry, but as a representative of a company, that is simply NOT an acceptable answer.)
I'm glad you have had great experiences with them, and I hope they continue. If however one day you run into a similar problem with them as the others who have posted here, you might change your view.

This is another case of blind AOL bashing.

What you have done, is click on a hyperlink in a spam message. Clicking on this link sent your username, and password to a malicious user. They now have joint control of your account.

You need to change your password more regularly, especially if you click on hyperlinks.

AOL is fine for a lot of people, so why don't you just exercise your right as a consumer to choose something else...

well im getting close to advertised speeds on aol and for the price of 44.95 before tax. im actually going faster then all my friends who r on roger and bell sympatico, so it amazing. itstallation was easy, just plug some things in and ur done, software installs it self, takes a while but gets done. modem took bout 2 days to get to me, and my phone line was set up in a day, even though bell screwed up and put me in dslam (no dial tone for bout 5 hours). aol provides a dsl modem, network cable, usb cable, and anything else i need to get online. the modem they give their customer doubles as a hub, so i save myself money not having to by a new hub. the ips that aol gave me were dynamic ips, so it great, keeps me form being hacked, expecially when aol gave me a free firewall too (mcafee firewall express)

in canada, aol broadband is fast and reliable. espercially in my area, where aol is the 2nd fastest internet provider, if ur useing a diff meathode to connect to aol (in xp its internet connection wizard), its all round great, other then the little problems they have wit bell canada over the phone lines.

------

UPDATE

well still going good, infact speed increased since last update, now im going 2.5mbits, which is close to the advertised 3mbits, but w/e i did hit 3mbits onces, but that was downloading bit for bit [the way linux dls]

-------

UPDATE 2

since the last update, which was a long time ago, everything has gone down the crapper, yes the speed increased to a measly 4mbps (which i have to fight with aol support for, apparently the max is 5, but my line is crap) the costs have gone down, a tiny bit, but when problem arise (real ones that need thier/bell's attention, takes days to complete, and apperently its not bell's fault (recently having problems with modem, and profile switching, aol submits support ticket to bell, almostly instantly bell calls me regarding my problem, while telling me that he forwarded the request for a new modem for me, but aol is always an answering machine for him, which is where the 3-5 business day delay comes in, at least thats what im assuming)

if my mother wasnt so dependent on her aol account, id switch to acanac.. wayyyy cheaper, better speeds (dont think my line could handle it though) and they have better methods of getting around bell's specialness. managing to slowly weed aol out of my mother system, so taht i can switch over, and not have to deal with aol any more... thier support is close to non existent now. only benefit, getting a US ip while in CANADA, which means i can watch all those US only content on websites.

I'm coming out of the closet, so to speak, about how good AOL used to be and I hope the mods keep this here.

I used AOL a LONG time ago. I remember signing onto AOL with a 486 100 mhz color laptop in 1997. My friends, and anyone using AOL, were the first ones to experience Instant Messenging, which at the time was integrated into AOL, not a seperate program.

For a long while, you never had to leave AOL. There were so many programs you could use, the chat rooms and newsgroups were excellent, people were actually NICE!

Yes, in 1997 people on the internet were nice!!

At the time, if you downloaded something on Internet Explorer, it downloaded on the page itself. if you closed the page, the download stopped. Another thing AOL had better, as you could download and then use another part of AOL.

But that was then. As the internet grew, AOL didn't. Stayed the same, even the price.

And the customer service became complete crap.

The service is now a sham. I stopped using it in 2002 and back then it had become a sham.

But I'll never forget what brought me to the internet.

I had AOL for dialup since I got my dell, only used it cause of the 6 months free. What a mistake I made! Prices jacked up to way past how much dialup should cost (over 23 bucks a month)! Anyway, then I got Verizon DSL which was great. But I didn't want to get rid of my email or screen name for AOL/AIM. So I kept AOL for Broadband for 9.95/month. I can't stand it. AOL gets you in with their free offers and then you can never get out. I am canceling immediately when my 6-month commitment is over! I already switched my email and screenname but its gonna take awhile for ppl to get used to it. God damn AOL! I thought even if you canceled you can atleast keep your screenname for aim, but they say no. Of Course.

UPDATE

I have canceled AOL for good and successfully got a new email address and screenname. Thanks AOL for the hell you put me through. And to people still using AOL, STOP!! There is absolutely no reason to use it! All the stuff AOL offers can be found around the web for free without any bloatware or ads! Free yourself from AOHell!

I got the same Aol price plan $9.95

How much did you have to pay for the $9.95 plan. Were there any additional charges? If they were then how much total did they charged you? See I didnt get my first aol bill yet. but before I get my first charge I would like to know from you did they scam you and overcharged. so that way I can switch to a different price plan with out receiving my first bill. However if they charged you more than $9.95 on your bill, then those others charges are the result of you using dial up access to aol. Please note with this price plan, you can only use high speed access to aol. using the dial up access to aol will incur additional hourly charges on your bill. $2.95/hour will be charged to your bill. But I dont know When I get my first bill I will find out.

AOL review reply

I kept AOL on BYOA for 7.95 a month 3 years ago, no committment and actually for a while now you can't keep your SN's for AIM once you delete them but sometimes can when you delete the acct totally. Interesting. For 7.95 a month it works for me as an "extra" for lists and large file size e-mails within AOL (16 megabytes per). I wouldn't pay much more than that, if they ever try to raise me I'm history and btw if you call, hit the cancel acct option and tell them you're unhappy due to inability to view embedded pics or any other known issues they do typically throw you two months free, no strings attached. You can do that about 3 times yearly usually and with their "issues" it is warranted

Re: AOL SUCKS

AOL does stink but I use it for "lists." Graphics and other items but we're all moving the groups over to Yahoo Groups (no better but they're free) now so I will probably cancel for good after close to 10 years. I pay $7.95 a month for it on the BYOA plan, I call ever 3 months to complain about the real heavy issues. When you threaten to leave (using option #3 for cancel acct when dialing) they usually give you 1 or 2 months for free. That is the only reason I've kept them and an FYI, hit option #3, threaten to cancel and you will get a free month or two. I've done it many times in almost 10 years. Good luck!

Well, I placed an order on February 5th and got the modem and the line provisioned on the 10th. Comes out to be that they placed DSL on the wrong line. I called and they said that my line was going to be ready the 19th. So, here I am waiting. Everything is ''worse'' because I haven't even gotten a chance to use it. As soon as I am connected I'll update my information. Now I'm using dial-up which is pretty good.

AOL DSL has been working smoothly the last few months. No connection drop-outs and it my DSL signal has been steady. I am capped at 768/128 and I get 752/135-6. AOL has beeen great!

Update---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------
AOL 9.0 IS COMING! GREAT FEATURES! GREAT EVERYTHING!

Update---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------
I have left AOL DSL, since a while back. Hopped on to Verizon Online DSL for 29.99/month for one year, with speeds up to 3.0/768. I usually get 2793/715. With AOL DSL I got 768/128 and payed more for it. The MSN software is great, but I dont use it that much. I prefer Firefox over all.

I read your comments. I don't claim to be an expert but it sounds to me like the reason why you're getting 500 KBPS is because you have not tweaked your windows registry. Have checked DSL Reports section on tweaking?

I had a similar problem with my current provider, but after I made the necessary changes the performance increased to 1158/208.

Good luck.

Re: Message for notoriousmee

Nah.. In NYC, many ISP's use the ILEC to provision the data connection over the same phone line to the residence, and when this is done that's the nominal line bit rate you could get. Verizon advertises 640K/90K D/U, and really get like 80% of that downstream, or 512K.

AOL Plus

Had AOL since 96. I got their DSL service last year ( after 4 months waiting ). Cancelled them after 2 mounths of use due to horrible speeds and disconnects( i am in brooklyn, Kings). but then again you might be lucky. Good luck with your new service. If you need any help with AOL Dsl support, modem or just have questions about AOL -Email me at ACNPRO@speakeasy.net.

AOL Plus...Tsk, tsk...

Hey everyone, I'm new here but I really have to state this. AOL Plus is all right, but we must remember who we're dealing with...AOL... AOL Plus is okay...For the short time that I am on...I am really just pissed about their Tech Support...It's stinks with a capital "S." I mean, I call up there and I state my problem and they tell me the same thing over and over again...The AOL Adapter this, the AOL Adapter that...I just bring up the fact that my network adapters are screwed up and they either change the subject, say that is the problem, or say,"No those have nothing to do with it." However, everything else they do doesn't work...I really think they have no idea about their software or hardware..."Stupid Geek Bastards," as David Lettermen says. They're crazy and their Tech Support sucks...But for the while I am online...The speed is heavenly bliss, being compared to a 56K modem that goes at 36.8 Kpers(KBPS). Other than that...Everything else is okay...Nice speed...That's about all I can say since I've only encountered crashes and conflicts and what not with my computer... If you're having my problem...When AOL says go into RUN and then MSCONFIG...That don't work...Removing the AOL Adapter doesn't work...Changing the hardware acceleration doesn't work... Deleting files and what not doesn't work... The revision of AOL makes no difference...Go by your own judgement. Not theirs because I honestly think they have no idea what their doing...

I spent two years connecting with aol, and for ten years I've had to deal with slow and sometimes non-existant connections. I've finally had enough and switched to Sympatico. I would recommend it too people who like to look at e-mail, and play the waiting game.
