I have had the service for about a year and a half and have not been down once that I can remember. It took a long time to get the service to our area, but it was worth the wait! I placed the order on-line and followed up with a phone call because I could not believe the service was available to me. The modem kit arrived as scheduled and my service was ready and turned on a few days before my due date. The regular speed is fine for our needs. We use connection with a network of two computers. One is usually connected to a work location via VPN and the speed is still fine!

I would highly recommend SBC DSL over cable(which I had while waiting for DSL) in a heartbeat!

The SBC-SNET forum is the best tech support around!

After using the service for over 1 year, I am very pleased. Hopefully, after the merge is completed with SBC/Yahoo, the email server reliability will improve.
I am using the 2wire Home portal and PPPOE.

After three good years of great service, I tried to upgrade to the Pro version and have been having connection problems ever since. Line tests indicated that I am capped at 2000kbps, so I returned back to the basic plan which always worked before. Nothing but heartache and constantly dropped signals now.

Got my DSL 10/2000 and love it, sure beats the days of multilinking 2 56k's. I was out of town the week of my due date, but the modem was in sync when I came back and it's been running great since, w/only a couple minor periods of downtime. On redback 2, it's been pretty good. Used an outside filter in the demark, had a few disconnection problems at first, I think the line was daisychained to another jack before hitting the one I wanted it at, so needed to run a home run. Ran the tweaks listed on this site and went from 500k to 1250k. didn't like PPPOE so got a cayman. Have access to some 6M lines at work, watching something d/l at about 700KB from a good site still amazes me. haven't used tech support, so gave them a avg rating.

Update 8/12/2005: Still running strong, got the upload bump which I badly needed last year. My Cayman died after unplugging it during the big blackout a year or 2 ago, it was still up and running on a UPS when I had gotten home and I didn't want it to run out & get a spike when everything came back on, in hind site guess I shoulda just left it plugged in and chanced it! I now use a Linksys wireless G and a 5260 modem (still kickin so why upgrade). Line is still as stable as ever, if there's ever a lag I know it's usually a PC related issue. Migrated the main ID & one email acct to the yahoo thing as I wanted national dialup access and web mail for one account, but didn't take the Yahoo browser or any of the other stuff, works fine for me. Guess I should change the bottom line to "It's 26.95". MrFixit and the crew here are really fantastic, don't know where we'd all be without them.

Netplex has 1.5MX128-384K ADSL for $24.95 a month on a 12 month term. Service also includes a static IP!!! Cheaper and faster. Backbone connection is in Hartford, not back-hauled from out-of-state.

Well after 4 phone calls with tech support, I finally got my connection up. I was supposed to be switched on Tue, Jan 22nd, so when I woke up I was pretty excited to get out of bed and try this speed demon. Wrong! I was not able to connect. I called tech support immediately and was told that my connection would start tommorrow, the 23rd, so I said ok and hung up. The same thing happens on the 23rd, no connection, morning or night. Now I am pretty pissed off at this point because I knew I had all the software I needed installed and the modem was plug and play. So I wake up on the 24th and lo and behold the connection is going, I couldn't beleive it, here tech support is trying to tell me I installed everything wrong, maybe my modem was bad, maybe the line was bad, so convinced that it was the equipment that they scheduled a crew to come out to my place to figure out what was wrong. You $hitheads. Next time make sure the switch has been flippeed on your side before blaming your customers. And if your a OS X user reading this don't even waste the phone call to Tech they have no idea that the Macintosh even exists. But after all that I guess I am happy with the speed. I would also like to hear from other Macusers out there.

May 2005 - Update have since moved since original install, the install process was flawless the second time. I have also upgraded my service to DSL Pro which gives a slight speed bump up/down for about $10 more a month, well worth it in my eyes. Very Reliable service.

The forum here is not in any way sanctioned by SNET/SBC tech support. So what I'm saying is yes, he has a right to bash SNET's tech support. Anyone who has been around the forum knows that if you want support DO NOT CALL SNET. Visit the forum here, where we have the best people who on their own time help out.

I re-upped recently for 12 months and got 3000/384 for about $37/month because I have other services with SBC (SNET). My usable throughput is about 2400/400 which is more than I need 99% of the time but it's nice when I'm moving some large files and less money than when I first signed on. I'm still a happy camper with them.

** Prior update(s) follow ***
I made the transition to the new SBC/Yahoo! services and have not had any trouble. I have not made much use of the 'extras' yet but for no added $ it's just nice to have them waiting for me. There seems to be a lot of worry about the handholding features, fear not, you don't have to load any of it if you prefer things that way. The bells and whistles look pretty good for those who want, or need, such features. I still say SNET is a good deal.

*** Prior update Follows ( I hate to revise history) ***

I can say it has been very reliable for me. I have not needed to call for support at all after initial setup. I have seen many others problems get resolved with input found here at DSLreports ( come to the SNET Forum )

My initial down speed was about 1080 but tweaking has brought that to the 1250 range. Upload speed has stayed around 134. The ping times were around 90 when I started service but recently plummeted to 41 (sweet!) Mail service has improved as well. Three months of satisfaction and counting.

*** Original Review Follows ( I hate to revise history) ***

My install had some glitches, due Sept.25 up Oct. 1. During that time I found Tech support mostly to be poor. Some people there seem to be on the ball but it was hard to get a clear idea of what was going on.

They claim 384-1500/128. When setup in thier default I got 934-1165/132 - not bad! After tweeking per DSLReports tweek test I'm up to 1241/136. (so far)

Service has been there reliably in the 11 days I've been up. Mail has gotten iffy now and then which I observed also with SNET dialup waiting for DSL. I believe they are doing work on the mail system, We'll see if it improves.

I am running the self install package of SpeedStream 5260, Enternet 300 ver 1.4 (PPPoE) with a dynamic IP. They give you 5 mailboxes and 5 Meg of webspace.

Overall I'm pretty happy. I am on the edge of town with limited options, no cable yet or they would have been considered. In a year I'll see what my options are but so far SNET is still in the running for a 're-up' - I'll revise this if things change, assume no change means it is still OK

Me too,

I also have SNET DSL here in Wallingford too.
The speed you are getting is consistent with what I get as well.
If you more than one computer, get a router (Linksys or D-Link) and dump the Enternet software. Even if you have just one computer, the router will also act as an incoming firewall.

Hi Halgren:)

I understand you have snet dsl and use a router. I am trying to connect with a router myself....here's what I have done so far. Modem to Netgear RT311 Router to Netgear EN104 4-port hub to two PCs. When I check the router status there is no WAN MAC address...o.o.o.o..zilch...help?
I was connecting fine before through a server setup using the enternet 300 software. I was always rebooting the server though it was a pain in the butt! Now, I am only semi-knowledgeable with this stuff so be kind!!! Any ideas???

NETGEAR RT311 with Efficient Networks SpeedStream 5260 and PPPoE

Table of Contents

1-Hardware connection

2-Software configuration

3-Advanced router setup

4-Firmware upgrade

5-RT314 notes

1) Hardware connection

Ensure DSL modem is connected to DSL circuit, and has power. If the DSL modem is connected to the DSL line, and is powered on, the first three lights (sys, atm, and dsl) should turn green within one minute of powering on the modem. If one or more of the first three lights does not turn green, there is a problem with the DSL line or the modem itself, please contact SNET DSL repair at 877-575-2528 to correct the problem.

Connect the ENET port on the back of the DSL modem with the Internet port on the back of the NETGEAR router via a "straight-through" network patch cable (CAT5 with RJ45 connectors). If building a cable yourself, please note that the cable is not really "straight-through", but uses the standard 10/100BT (TIA/EIA 568B) wiring scheme.

Connect the Local port on the back of the NETGEAR router to your network equipment. This equipment can be a single host machine, or a hub/switch. Use a "cross-over" network patch cable when connecting a single computer or connecting to most uplink ports on a hub/switch. Not all uplink ports will be usable to connect to the router. A "cross-over" cable reverses the pin configuration of the orange and green pairs on one end of the cable (TIA/EIA 568B TIA/EIA 568A). On one end, green-white and green will be connected to pins 1 and 2, orange-white and orange will be connected to pins 3 and 6 (TIA/EIA 568A) instead of orange-white and orange on pins 1 and 2 and green-white and green on pins 3 and 6 (TIA/EIA 568B). When connecting to a normal port on a hub/switch, use a standard "straight-through" network patch cable.

2) Software configuration

Setup a workstation computer with a web browser installed. Configure the ethernet card for this machine to configure itself via DHCP (aka Obtain an IP address automatically). Then reboot the computer, or renew the IP address for that ethernet adapter.

Open the web browser on this computer, and enter "http://192.168.0.1/" as the web address in the Location/Address window. This should bring up a Username/ Password dialog box, if it does not, go back and check that the previous steps have been done correctly. If this is the first time configuring this router, enter "admin" for the Username, and enter "1234" for the Password (without quotes).

This will bring you into the configuration program for the NETGEAR router. Click on WIZARD SETUP in the left frame, this will bring up the General Setup screen. Leave Host Name and Domain Name blank, click Next. The ISP Parameters for Internet Access screen will now be displayed. Choose PPP over Ethernet from the Encapsulation list. This will change the ISP Parameters for Internet Access screen allowing you to enter more information. Leave Service Name Blank. Enter your User Name and Password in the next two entry boxes then click Next. The final screen will now be displayed in your browser window. Make sure that WAN IP Address Assignment is set to Get automatically from ISP, DNS Server Address Assignment is set to Get automatically from ISP, and WAN MAC address is set to Factory default. Click Finish. Click LOGOUT to log out of the configuration system.

Wait five minutes, then try to access a site on the internet such as »www.ntplx.net/ If you are unable to access this site after five minutes, go back to the router configuration page, and click on WIZARD SETUP. Verify that the Encapsulation setting is set to PPP over Ethernet, and re-enter your User Name and Password. After finishing the configuration and clicking LOGOUT, wait another five minutes, then try to access »www.ntplx.net/ in your web browser again. If you are still unable to access this site, your router will likely require a firmware upgrade. See section 4 to perform a firmware upgrade on your router.

3) Advanced router setup (port forwarding)

Port forwarding is not reccomended with the NETGEAR RT311 router at this time due to configuration issues. These issues may be resolved in later firmware versions (>3.22).

4) Firmware upgrade

The following instructions will demonstrate how to upgrade the firmware on your NETGEAR router. Firmware version 3.20 is believed to not work with NETPLEX's PPPoE equipment. If your router firmware is currently version 3.22 or higher a firmware upgrade is likely not needed, and not reccomended. To check your firmware version click on MAINTENANCE under ADVANCED on the router configuration page, the currently installed firmware version will be displayed near the top of that page.

Download the newest firmware available from NETGEAR. Go to »www.netgear.com/, click on Customer Service, then Documentation and drivers, select Softwares(Driver/Firmware/Configuration) from the Select a Download Type menu, enter RT311 in the Keyword entry box, then click Submit to the right. This will display a list of currently available firmware upgrades for your router. Click on the link of the newest non-beta firmware version available.

Once the ZIP file has finished downloading, unzip it into a directory on your hard drive (ie X:\RT311). Open a MS-DOS Prompt window, and cd to the directory where you unziped the ZIP file (ie cd \RT311). Type "dir", and make a note of the names of two files, one that begins with ROM, and one that ends in .BIN. Type (without quotes) "ftp 192.168.0.1". Enter (without quotes) "admin" at the User prompt, and "1234" at the Password prompt. Type "binary" then press Enter. Type "put 314v???.bin ras" replacing ??? with the number that corresponds with the name of the .BIN file recorded earlier, press Enter. Once the transfer is complete, the router will automatically reboot itself. Once the reboot has completed, repeat all the steps above beginning with the "ftp 192.168.0.1" command, then for the last step, instead of "put 314v???.bin ras" type "put rom?????.??? rom-0" replacing ?????.??? with the remainder of the name of the ROM file recorded earlier, press Enter. Once this transfer has completed, the router should reboot itself again. Your router firmware has now been upgraded. This process will erase all configuration values previously entered for this router, see section 2 to reconfigure your router.

For further information, and specific procedures regarding the particular firmware version you downloaded, see the PDF files included in the ZIP file.

The exact location of the firmware upgrades may change if NETGEAR changes the layout of their site. If you are unable to connect to the internet other than through the router, contact NETGEAR customer support at 888-NETGEAR to obtain a firmware upgrade for your RT311.

5) RT314 notes

The only difference between the RT311 and RT314 is that the RT314 has a built in four port hub. This allows four computers to have simultaneous internet access without the use of an external hub/switch.

I've been a SBC/Yahoo DSL user for several years now. I've had very few problems. The SBC/Yahoo forum is the place to go for any and all DSL related matters.

Overall, I'm a very satisfied customer.

Re: Tweaked,Peaked, Hazzeled and Frazzled

That pretty slow you need to call snet and have a tech come out. A freind of mine was having a bad time also SNET sent an ASI guy out and now hes sailing right along.

Re: Tweaked,Peaked, Hazzeled and Frazzled

I've done that. ASI tech was here. They keep telling me the internet is busy you know. Everyone is not as stupid as they are! They got the gaul to compare their DSL to cable.
Funny thing is i know many cable setup that have constant 1800 kbps at all hours. then they will say cable bogs down as your Neighbors get hooked up. SNET systems for DSL are full, oversold, weak and because of this have constant outages. They should get more equipment and fix the problem before they lose their customer base, then their own jobs!

This is what I got with SNET at noon on 10/16/00:

Your download speed : 1019180 bps, or 1019 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 124.4 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 107816 bps, or 107 kbps.
Your connection rocks .. above the 1mbit barrier!

So I still can't complain, although I can see why most SNET customers are pissed off. I'll wait my 1-year contract out and see where the cards fall at that point.

Re: Tweaked,Peaked, Hazzeled and Frazzled

I used to get very good results from the east coast test, but not from the west coast. In my network settings, I shut off PMTU discovery, and instantly my speeds to the west coast server shot WAY up. You may want to find the registry key and test both settings. I did it in FreeBSD, but I don't have the key for windows.

However, you will notice at night that no matter how hard you tweak things, it is slowed WAY down. In the morning, trying to download large files from sunsite.unc.edu, I get 158 KB/sec.

Have "upgraded" to the "Pro" package, for basically very, very little! 3 mbps line is netting me a healthy 2.52 mbps down, and 437 kbps up! Service has been, and remains rock-solid...and the doubling of my through-put at very little cost is nice indeed!

After seeing an ad in the local paper which basically "reimburses" the sign-up, and modem cost ($150), and gives $10.00 off for the 1st 6 months ($34.95, next 6 months $44.95), I checked it out. The representative was polite, reasonably knowledgable, self-install sounded like a no-brainer, my only disappointment being that I called 12/12/01 and would not receive service until 01/08/02. Received install "kit" in about a week. Just over 2 weeks got the "software" (didn't need it with XP) and Login & E-mail ID. Figured what the heck, see if it was on yet, very easy to install, and lo and behold was on-line on 12/26. With a little judicious tweaking (from this site, thanks!), running about 1295/109 (down/up). Had to get too "tricky" and shot my connection in the foot, had to call tech support a couple of times. In each instance I got patient, and accurate advice. . Newsgroup is typical server, you want a great news server, pay for one.

Service has now "migrated" to SBC/Yahoo. No real complaints, quality of service (excellent) has not changed. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a trouble-free broad band experience!

Now have had it for 2 full years, Upload speed has increased, for free, and cost has actually gone down...Still a happy camper!
