    My Other Reviews·AT&T DSL Service
Initial contact with SNET was on 12/28/00 with an Installation Date of 01/17/01.
    Location- Seymour CT
    Service- 384kbps-1.5mbps down/128kbps up (PPPoE)
latest Speed tests yields 658 / 110 --- I'm nearly 12,000 ft from the CO
    Installation by an ASI Tech-
The Tech (Matt) was GREAT--he used the tests on this site to ensure the setup was working fine!!!!!
The only tweaks I've had to do was an increase in the MTU from 1452 to 1492 and the IP address change to eliminate stalls and freezes. The MTU change was done with assistance from this group--great bunch of folks!!!! The IP address change came from the information at the Tweaks page on this site. THIS IS A GREAT SITE!!!!!!
I would rate the SNET DSL as GOOD. I've experienced no service issues in the short time I've been with them.Their phone Customer Service / Techs Support, however, is extremely poor....they seem to lack the skills and knowledge to solve problems!!
    Equipment:
    WIN98se
    Dell xps B800 256 MbRAM
Enternet 300 Ver 1.4 PPPoE software
    Kingston 10/100 Ethernet card
    Efficient 5260 ADSL Modem

    04/11/02--
WOW---what a difference a year and a few months makes!!!!!
Same SETUP-some minor tweaks --- an uncapped line and an extended reach DSL modem(Efficient Speed Stream Model 5262) now routinely nets me 1260kbps down and 109 up.
I would rate the service, now, as excellent.
The SNET NEWS service is a major dissappointment with poor renention and incomplete postings--I now use EASYNEWS for my USENET needs. EMAIL service has been excellent with only several server issues over the past (13) months
Service is now listed, by SNET, as 1.5mbps down/128kbps up (PPPoE)--there's no limit on the low end of the download speed!!!!

    11/11/02--
    Still moving along VERY well--
Email service is a bit frumpy at times over that past 8 weeks-I'm still an SNET.NET account. No change to YAHOO yet

    11/08/03---
Made the "change" to a YAHOO account a while ago---same great service...UPLOAD speeds have increased, with the ISP equipment upgrades made in late September, from an average of 112 to over 210kbps...same great DOWNLOAD speed of just under 1300.

    12/23/04---
No issues---service has been GREAT--- No email issues, no service interuptions, no speed issues...the latest hardware changes have netted a big improvement in UPLOAD speeds which now average 315kbps--same great download speed of just under 1300. Even got a price break to $31.95/month

I had been stuck with Charter Pipeline for about 2 years as I live too far from the CO (about 25,000 feet). So finally SNET gets some RT's set up in New Milford, and I find out I can get DSL. I signed up online for the $29.95 for 12 months deal, for 1500 up/128 down "standard plus" package, with the self install kit.

My original go live date (9/5) came and the modem has not yet arrived. I called up SNEt and found out the order didn't actually go through, they would have to re-submit it manually. OK, so they do that. New go-live date of 9/11. The modem showed up on 9/8 so I hooked it up and had a connection right away. Got my user ID and password, installed the software (big mistake) and went through the whole registration process. Now here's where it gets a little hairy.

First of all, they assign me a user ID with my name spelled wrong. Wow, thanks guys, don't give me a chance to select my own or anything. Now the bad part. I could deal with the messed up ID since I won't be giving it out. I've had the same Yahoo ID for about 4 years, and when the option to "merge" it with my SBC account came up, with all the great features they give you including the extra storage and photos and briefcase, Launchcast premium, among other things, I thought OK I'll use the same ID I've had forever. Go ahead and merge it. Now, I was not aware at the time that I could have held off on this and just merged a sub-account. Also, once you merge, you can't undo it. Period. They claim it can't be done. That's bull and I know it, they just don't WANT to do it, because if they do it for one, they have to do it for all. They need to straighten out this process. MrFixitCT helped me try to get my account changed, but I'd have lost my Yahoo ID so that wasn't gonna work, as that's what I've given out over the past 4 years as my email address so that if my ISP ever changed, my email would not. Well now look, SBC has gone and taken over my Yahoo account and I can't have it back.

This is the only drawback I have encountered with the service. Everything else has been great, from the tech support getting me my ID (because it didn't show up until almost a week after my go-live date) to getting my billing straightened out (first month I got charged for the modem and wrong contract price on DSL), to the rock-solid connection that hasn't gone down since I got it. My cable connection used to drop at least once a day, and it was much slower than advertised, and their DNS servers were always down, and it was way overpriced for that. Aside from the Yahoo merge issues, I have been very happy with my DSL service and have no intention of changing any time soon.

    ---Update 12/14/04---

I moved from New Milford to Watertown this past summer, and contrary to what I had been reading on the forums about moving DSL service, I had no problems at all with it. The disconnect was on time at the old place, and the re-connect was not the same day, but it was done exactly when they said it would be, 3 days later. I'm now getting better speed at the new place (short distance to CO now, woohoo!) and even better reliability than I had before. This past weekend I also added SBC-Dish Network to my service, and got my DSL price down to 19.95, and get to save even more since I was able to dump over-priced Cablevision. Optimum Online keeps calling me trying to get me to switch, but I see no reason to pay more than double for my broadband service. All they tout is their super high speed. Well, I frankly don't care how fast it is. If it's not reliable, it's of no use to me. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried it for a couple of weeks just to see what all the fuss was about, and it really didn't impress me all that much. Not to mention the fact that you don't get any other services with it, like unlimited nationwide dialup access (used for when I travel), or my 2 GB Yahoo mailbox. I maintain my opinion that if you want a fast, reliable and solid connection at a great value, then look no further than SBC Yahoo DSL.

I ordered the 1500/128 DSL package at $49.99/mo. My target date was moved back by a few days, but may have had a connection earlier if I had just turned everything on! Did a self-install with little or no problems, using the Kingston NIC card and SpeedStream 5260 modem supplied. Was slogging through the internet at unusually low speeds for awhile until members of DSL Reports steered me in the right direction and SNET fixed me up. I've been enjoying my DSL experience ever since. I have since installed a Linksys BEFSR41 router w/ 2 pc's attached and my little network runs smoothly. As previously stated in posts, if you're running into problems contact someone in the SNET forum here in DSLRepots and you will be cruising smoothly in no time.

    Update:

I live approx. 12000-14000 ft from CO and I have download speeds consistently in the upper 1200's to low 1300's but my uploads hang around 60-70.

    Update: 09/30/04

Uploads have improved significantly since last review. Now I average around 290-310. Also have changed package. Now going w/ the All Distance with all bells & whistles (caller ID, voice messaging etc.) and DSL. I'm happy with it.

Connection Manager software doesn't manage anything that I can tell. That includes attempting to re-connect after a drop. I've known dead dogs with more smarts.

IOW, I don't use their software.

Nothing like experimenting with a problem for 3 days by myself, without a single response from SBC in their forum here »AT&T Northeast and I solved it. Probably would have solved it faster by not wasting time here.

    Rating dropping like a rock...

BOOM! I think I hit Wile E. Coyote down there.

    My Other Reviews·AT&T Yahoo
    Updated 3 September 2006

Very solid service. Absolutely no complaints.

    Updated 23 July 2004

Very solid service. My only complaint at this point is the slow roll-out of the higher upload speeds. They are over a year late from the original schedule. But I can't say that this has been a real hinderance even though I use VPN into work 40 to 50 hours a week. But higher upload would be nice ....

    Updated 9 May 2003

Still solid as a rock. Ping times from the DSLR monitoring are still improving. It seems they are getting their network tuned. I'm thinking of going for the upgrade to 1500/256 but that would require some down time I am told and I don't know if it's wroth it.

    Updated 22 Mar 2003

Stability of the network has been very good from the beginning but it has been getting even better over the past few months. And now I have been keeping an eye on the line monitor and general ping times are dropping (which is good!) I haven't noticed much of a speed increase but I suspect that the speed variations are lessening.

    Updated: 24 Dec 2002

I upgraded both the Tech Support and Line reliability today. Tech Support because they now have official sanction to help out here on BBReports. That SBC would do this is fantastic, especially when other vendors are denying their techs access to BBR. Line Reliability has been rock solid for the past six months or so and line speeds and latency have been steady.

I also upgraded Sale and Installation because of comments on the BBR site and not from any of my own experiences as I have had no reason to contact them since the beginning.

    Original review:
I had originally heard that SNET was completely clueless for DSL. After installing and using it I don't think that is true. I think the disconnect is between the tech support/ordering desk and the actual capabilities. It's really too bad that the people you first talk to have so LITTLE knowledege of what it is they are selling. They end up saying anything at all to get you to buy it.

I was told, incorrectly, that I could have one fixed IP and as many dynamic IPs as I wanted. Now, in fact, that may be true but it wasn't set up that way. I DID end up happy because I purchased (extra) a Linksys router and have my network working perfectly. And it wasn't hard at all to do.

Although when I ordered my DSL SNET did not support routers you can purchase one from them today. I recommend it highly; mostly because you do not have to install their intrusive software on your machine. I would recommend a router even to someone with only a single machine, it does provide firewall protection (due to NAT) and you never know when you might want to hook up the second computer.

If the techs would just have that little bit of knowledge that would help them understand what it was they were actually selling it would make a large difference.

In the mean time .... join and visit www.dslreports.com for the real answers. SNET DSL has been good to me and it's not rocket science.

Order placement went without a hitch. Self install kit arrived the same day the line was turned on. I did not recieve the account info for two weeks after the DSL modem was installed and live. The guys here at DSLR in the SNET forum got me running early, and I thank them dearly. The few calls to SNET/SBC for support were so so. They have a hidden support telephone number, that is given only if you call the a support number first.

The speed and connection from the RT have been great and I have not noticed any drops (comp not on 24/7) in the time that I have had it.

2 and a half years latter and still happy with the service. Could be faster. From what I understand in the forums Connecticut the last of SBC's territories to get anything. Running on anRT and no major down time. With the new service contract the price has come down too.

I purchased the 1.5Mbps/128Kbps package a year ago and it was FINE. It NEVER went down at all on me as far as I can remember. Rock solid speed (1.2Mbps stable) and reliability made me never want to switch.

I upgraded to the 6016/608 package last week and it is FAST. Connected to the RT, I'm getting 4.5-5.0Mbps down and 515Kbps up. It is a little expensive, around $150, but it is WORTH it if you need these speeds like me.

21 days total from order, live 3 days before actual date. I've been through ISDN, IDSL, DSL and cable while living in Texas so I had an idea of what to expect. For the price of $39 (12 month contract), I ordered the 768-1500/256 service. Right from the get go i'm averaging 1270/240 on the line and I'm expecting after the initial optimizing days that it will stay the same or improve. I'm quite happy with it. The support in the forum here is excellent and everyone is very helpful, it's a god send. Everything went very smoothly. One thing to note: I have my email and web hosted elsewhere and I don't read newsgroups so I can't comment on those services.

    27 Nov 2003:
I believe service has been down a total of maybe half a day. To say that it has been rock solid would be an understatement. I couldn't be happier with the service.

    25 Feb 2004:
Connection reliability has been great, but SNET is no more. They are now SBC North. I've moved my review to SBC Yahoo.

    1 Apr 2004:
No new tiers in CT yet. Connection is still rock solid even though I've noticed a slight slowdown and my speed tests aren't what they used to be. If I have a viable option aside DSL either with a different provider or Cable, I would definitely give them a try. SBC DSL is not the best value out there anymore, by a long shot.

    July 2004:
Good riddance to SBC altogether. Using myeastern.com for cable and internet and Lingo for phone (VOIP). Savings and reliability without the lies, I'm glad is over with SBC
