Ordered 1500/128, order/install process was very easy. Home equipment was exactly as offered (modem, filters, NIC card, CD, etc. DSL was active the day is was supposed to be. Ever since the speeds have been realtively stable, got my ul speed raised to 256 when it was offered. Migrated to Yahoo without any difficulty, which opened the door to a whole host of extra services.

As I said above, outside of the current isseu I'm in the middle of (and it is frustrating), my service has been outstanding, and even when the service has been interrupted, it has been restored in a timely fashion and explained as to the cause of the disturbance.

"Excellent service for almost two years now! Fully advertised speeds!"

The service, over all, has been quite good. There are very few outages, and most outages have been planned and announced here in the SBC/SNET Forum. The speeds are fine, however, SBC has been very, very slow in upgrading their customers to 256K upload. Also, we here in CT have been excluded thus far from the new speed packages offered in all of SBC's other markets (claimed to be due to 'billing issues').

So, over the past few months, there have been a few discouraging instances with SBC. Slower upload and download speeds than the competition (Again - Only here in Connecticut), and pretty poor tech support (Never ever call for support if possible. Always come here first for help.) I have over-all downgraded my rating of SBC.

In closing, I'll list the pros and cons of SBC/Yahoo! DSL

    Pro:
    Consistent, reliable speeds
    Decent equipment offerings (2Wire, Cayman/netopia modem/router, Speedstream 5100b)
    Very few outages
    Excellent support from forum members

    Con:
    Lower speeds than competition
Lower speeds in CT than all other SBC markets
Terrible newsgroups - Binaries are heavily filtered, and message retention is piss poor
Poor telephone support - Tier 1 often knows nothing, and often can't even give you a straight answer for simple questions like "Can I even get DSL?".

No 3.0/384 Tier available in CT yet, every other SBC state has it. A billing problem, or so we're told. No mention of this when the promotion was offered, don't tell us your going to offer it if your not. Waiting patiently for the new service.

3/7/04 - Update - Still no new service tier, no info, even the omnipotent mrfixit can't get an answer. Done with this. After my contract is up in a couple of months I'm moving to cable.

    My Other Reviews·Comcast
    UPDATE:
    02/28/04
Everything is smooth and I have no problems with the service except for one. That is the comparative cost vs speed. Definatly not the best deal in town. I'll be moving soon and Comcast is available at the new place... I may just give them a chance.

    12-08-02
Everything is going great. No problems at all

    1-28-01

Well, been over a year since installation. Everything is going smoothly. Have only lost connection a couple times. Speed is consistant due to me using Netplex as my ISP. I had a line installed in my home, install ther was about on par with my original review below. Seems that the hardest thing about getting DSL is actually getting DSL. Once you are up it is usually a smooth ride.

    Origional Review below.

SNET, do I need to say anything else. Our first appointment was set for September 8th. A technician came out to check the line on August 29th, and told us we were all set. I was with them and all they did was listen for a dial tone, what a joke.

The 8th comes and go's, no one shows up. We call our rep, who retired!, upon talking to our new rep we are given a new date of September 21st. A technician shows up on September 19'th to check the line no signal. Our install appointment is bumped again, this time to the 28th.

Here we are on September 28th, around noon we call our rep to make sure everything is OK, She is in training all week and is unavailable. I transfer to another rep, who is somewhat rude and unavailable to help me. This rep actually refuses to give me her name!!!. Being pi#$ed I call Emerging Services. Believe it or not I actually got a hold of someone who knew what was what and was able to help me.

We were told that there was a problem on the line (we knew this on the 19th), and that it would take about 3 days to fix. They will call to reschedule. Our final install date was on October 11'th. Our modem was in and waiting, The line actually came up a couple of days early.

After a couple more calls to SNET to other details right, such as NETPLEX being our ISP instead of SNET Things are running smooth. The biggest problem I am having now is that SNET set us up at the wrong speed, We ordered 6000/1500, and were given 1500/128. Still waiting on a resolution for that one.

I have had DSL for almost 5 years now. It works great. Thank you SNET. Keep up the great work. I am paying 39.95 for the old deluxe package (which is no longer available). For $3.00 Less I want to get 1.5-3.0 meg.package...$36.99 per month...Everytime I call they have no idea when it will be available. If it was still SNET...I am sure it would already done.. Come on SBC get it together......

    Update 12/07/2004 STILL WAITING....

UPDATE:1/15/2005 Ordered and am now using PRO package. It is working fine.

I like this FASTER service and it is less money...2.5mgs down 439 up...$36.99..Thanks SNET I mean SBC....

    Monthly Internet charge $49 for 1.5 downstream 125 up,dynamic IP,PPPoE software.
Self Insall went smooth:5260 speedstream modem/Kingston EtherRx kne111tx Nic card
10/4/00 was my line programing but could not install on that day because the snet network routers were down(Snet has sent a letter on 11/10/00 with a $39 credit for November : ) for network downtime in October,My downtime was around 10 Hours that night)
I have been connected since 10/5/00 with to many problems.Dramatic peed drops for a week or so around 3/4/01 but problem was addressed and is pretty much back to normal.Rate hike from $39 to $49/month in spring of 2001
After system tweaks from DSLREPORTS.COM I am getting consistant speeds that are close to what I am paying for.
Other than the rate hike,I am a happy clam.

SBC/SNET has merged with Yahoo and so far we continue to enjoy the same service and speeds we have enjoyed in the past. A small problem with the transition to mail
servers with older (4.xx) versions of Netscape is that outgoing mail servers need a password entered so password entry is required at every mail session now. Other than that...still a happy clam!

1/26/04 Price drop offered to legacy customers for a 1 year contract a price of $26 per month is offered. package is 1.5kbs down and the upload has been increased from 130kbs up to 220kbs up!. The great solid sevice continues.

    My Other Reviews·Charter Pipeline
I see there is a horror story with SNET so I figured I'd add my success

    story.

I live 16,800 feet from the CO! Now that's really pushing my luck. Plus, the lines here were strung as communications facilities for the pilgrims who landed on the Mayflower! But three techs made a substantial effort to get me set up, and one even bookmarked DSLreports so I could get to the tweaks and speed tests easily.

I could not be happier, but perhaps that is because I can appreciate that this was a difficult installation, not some Constitutional right I had been being denied before the installation. I tend to think that many of the complaints are valid, but let's leave out the whining. New technology is new technology and sometimes it is more difficult to get running well than stuff that's been around for a while is.

One bad experience w/SNET that is legit - the 1st appointment fell

through because the tech got tied up with a prior and no one called to

let me know. Other than that, I'm happy as a pig in shit! If all you

can see are the negatives, you're either an electrode or a whiner.

    UPDATE

About 1 year into the system speeds declined precipitously, so I called SNET and learned that they had capped me. I had the cap removed but now, years later SNET is part of SBC and again I think I'm capped. The trouble is that now the service calls go to a call center somewhere outside the solar system and I doubt I'll ever get a straight answer about the cap, or get it removed if it's really there. In March 02 I stepped up from a 530Mh chip and W98 to a 1.8g with WXP. The first 2 months my speeds were regularly 1.1M, 1.2M and so forth. But they soon dropped to their current levels of 650 to 800 on average. I know I'm not tweaked right and I also believe I'm capped, but I doubt the cap will ever be admitted by the ISP. However, I still averaging close to 2X what I bought (384) so I'm not really that bothered by the whole thing. The price is up to $50 but my overall phone package gets me a $10 credit against that, so it's still $40.

I have now had Cox HSI for over a year now and I couldn't be happier with it.

What a fool I was to stick with SBC SNET DSL for as long as I did.

I have convinced many friends to switch and they are as happy with Cox as I am. Cox can also provide your telephone service cheaper and with a bigger calling area.

I waited and waited for DSL to become available in my area and I now all I do is wait and wait and wait and not just for my connections but also for tech support. I have spent many hours trying to get technical support and have been given different numbers that were supposed to get me to specific areas only to wind up in St. Louis or Orlando when I was supposed to reach Cheshire, CT. I spent 4 1/2 hours on the phone on 3/4 with 90% of that time being on hold only to be disconnected or routed somewhere other than I was supposed to go. Tech support is friendly and they mean well but I don't think that the problem is with them. I think the problem is with SNET and their equipment. I did a speed test today and got 21KBPS up and 69KBPS down and this is one of the better results that I have gotten. I am constantly knocked off line and sometimes the only way that I can get back up is to completely shut down and unplug the modem for a couple of minutes.

IT IS NOW JULY AND I HAVE HAD THIS SINCE OCTOBER. I KEEP WAITING FOR SNET TO GET BETTER BUT IT ISN'T HAPPENING YET. I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE TROUBLE TICKETS SINCE MY LAST REVIEW AND STILL NO IMPROVEMENT WITH THE SERVICE AND TECH SUPPORT IS WORSE THAN EVER. MY MAIN PROBLEM IS UPLOAD CRAWLS OF 10 & 12 KBPS.

THE LATEST TROUBLE TICKET WAS ISSUED ON 7/17. I WOULD BE CALLED WITHIN 3 BUSINESS DAYS. I CALLED TODAY AT 430 PM AND WAS TOLD THAT SNET HAD RESOLVED THE PROBLEM AND THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHY I WASN'T CALLED BACK. THE PROBLEM WAS NOT RESOLVED. I ASKED TO SPEAK TO A SUPERVISOR AND WAS GIVEN ANOTHER TROUBLE TICKET NUMBER AND WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD BE CALLED BACK TODAY AS SOON AS SOMEONE PICKED UP THE TICKET.

I CALLED BACK AT 600 PM AND WAS TOLD THAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IT WOULD BE WITHIN 4 HOURS. AT 830 PM I CALLED BACK AND WAS CUT OFF WHILE THEY WERE TRYING TO CONNECT ME TO A TECH REP. I CALLED BACK AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS NO ONE AVAILABLE FOR CONNECTICUT TECH SUPPORT AFTER 7 PM AND THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHY I WASN'T TOLD THAT.

WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT "Technical support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week" MEANS OR BETTER STILL TELL SNET WHAT IT MEANS. I COPIED IT FROM THEIR WEB SITE. I ALSO COPIED THE FOLLOWING FROM THEIR WEB SITE. "384Kbps - 1.5Mbps / 128Kbps DSL Internet Service".

I HAVE GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE I CAN'T BELIEVE ANYTHING THAT SNET SAYS OR PUTS ON THEIR WEB SITE.

I finally gave up on snet dsl and just accepted the bad service instead of trying to get them to fix it. Last week I finally got motivated and ordered Cox Cable High Speed Internet. Three days from order to working. The speed makes snet dsl look like a turtle. My lowest test results were faster than snets highest especially on the upload speeds which are 3 times as fast. I callled tech support twice with self installation questions. The tech picked up both times in less than a minute. I would probably still be on hold if I was calling sbc snet. At least I didn't have to wait long on hold to cancel my sbc snet dsl service. I only wish that I had done it much sooner.

    My Other Reviews·Comcast
    ·Comcast Digital Vo..
    -----Update------ 05-Jan-2004

After having SBC Yahoo DSL for over a week, I have to say that I am quite satisfied. The speeds are always consistent, and I have no problems downloading large files and playing games. The pings are 5-10ms higher than when I had cable on average, however the cable pings at all times of the day would randomly shoot up to 80-90ms to most east coast servers. I'm still trying to get the 256kbps upload, and the tech's in the SBC-SNET forum are being helpful. The service is great with the 128kbps upload, and it's just a bonus if I can get the higher upload. The services are great, such as the homepage and Launch.com radio. The stream of the audio is good quality and much better than listening to the radio. Video streams are also good. I have only lost DSL once, and that was because there was a faulty piece of equiptment down the street that needed to be replaced. The tech called in reponse to my losing my dial tone and said I would lose service for 15min which everything was replace. About 15min later I had service again. This was definitly worth the switch from cable.

    -----Original Review---- 27-Dec-2003

I ordered the SBC SNET DSL on the 18th. My go live date was the 30th, however, my line was live on the evening of the 26th. I called and got my username and password and was surfing in no time. I have not yet played with the e-mail and what not, but my speeds are quite good. Advertised speeds are 1500kbps/256kbps. I'm getting 1204kbps/136kbps and the 10 day period isn't even close to over. I'm hoping I can get over 1300kbps on the download and get up to 256kbps upload. I thought that all the new accounts were being provisioned with the 256kbps up, but maybe not a first. The best part is the price. $26.95 is much better than the $43 I was paying Comcast and now I don't have packet loss and mystery download caps. I'm using a Linksys router so the PPPoE was not a problem and I never took the installation disk out of the box. So far so good, and I will keep the review updated as things progress.

With unlimited local/Long Distance calling. Equipment came 5 days later. Plugged modem in and it synced right up. Called tech support, got username/password and was online. Eaasy instal and with router pppoe is not an issue. Only downside is the slower d/l speed (1.5) than I previously had with cable. Hopefully this will change.
