AT&T delivered me broadband many years ago as SNET, I'm still running at the same speed they gave me almost a decade ago with no prospect of going faster. Of late the price has almost doubled with no service improvement, though I'm no longer on a contract. If I could keep my AT&T email accounts, I'd be gone in a heartbeat. I'm preparing to give Comcast HSI a try, and will keep AT&T while testing Comcast HSI. Once I've made a decision, I'll update my review. AT&T is failing to provide me with necessary network speed. It seems stuck for me in the year 2000.
-------------
Update, AT&T DSL was ok for a 1.5mb down / 384 kb up service. My needs changed, AT&T didn't. The 1.5/384 tier was the only tier AT&T made available to me. I have run Comcast concurrently with AT&T for about 2 months. Today I made the switch to Comcast. Which is providing me about 4 times the speed for about twice the price after their introductory 6 month special is over. I'd have stayed with AT&T if they offered a faster tier. Catalog this as a former AT&T DSL customer review.

That is all... not very happy right now. I'm not going to pay to have some SBC guy come out and tell me there is some magical problem inside my house. Hell, I ran a line directly from the tiedown and still have slllloooooowwww ass speeds.
Switched to cable... Comcast OWNS SBC/AT&T... 20,000kbps+ speed here, NO packetloss... WTF?!?!? DSL can die a horrible death.

Took about 5 days from the order, thats including waiting for the Modem to get to my house.
Had no problem what so ever installng it. I got activated 10 days before the actication date.
Speed is in the 1250+ Download 250+ Upload.
Why i love it? Because if it wasn't for our great Forum here i'm sure I would've whine eveyday that why can't i get OOL kind of speed. well I love My DSL. thanks SNET for putting a RT near me.
April 23rd (Update)
Called To Move service within Connecticut, DSL downtime Expected? Zero days (with an extra 30 bucks i get the dual service) so both My old Address and New Address would be operating till the end of May.
May 10th (update)
HORROR!! HORROR!! HORROR!!!!
My April 23rd updates was all lies sad but true. all broken promises. Suppose to be up on the 29th but then i was told it will be delayed because of some ordering issues they had. Note: telephone was dead as well for 4 days, then The due date was set on the 9th and again no go.. Gotta call and my due date is pushed to the 16. Sad day!
May 13th 20 days after i called for moving service and 15 days without DSL, Its true! sad but unfortunatly true that Moving DSL service to a different location is proven difficult and very inconvienient even with help from Official DSLR support group (BIG HELP ! ) . Hopefully SBC and is affiliates would tackle this Serious Issue and hope this experience would be a great lesson to others that are planing to move.
My advise? Call and cancel the account and re order instead of using the "Move your services". I'm pretty sure and very sure this month billing would be a Major mess. since i'll be out of town for several weeks i can only say that when i get back to it i'm pretty sure it'll be there.
For SBC, a personal Advice get your act together because you nearly lost a great customer and if it wasn't the great help from fellows that voluntarily help people here at DSLR you guys are surely to loose me.
Updates after vacation...
All running smoothly... Although the billing deparment put me back on 1500/128 since they messed up on some billing stuff that i never looked at. Call them and everything got fixed back to 1500/256 after 5 days. No problem since.
Getting my usual 1250/245 speed.
December 24th 2003 Still waiting patiently for speed upgrades. Comcast is offering 19.95 for 12 months if your a DSL customer and their speed is 3000/256.. dillema!
March 5th 2004 All SBC regions except in CT are offering better speed package. Still waiting for SBC to fix a "billing problem"
December 31st 2004 After a year of waiting. It finally got to CT. I'm on the 3mb/512 package. I'm getting 2500/430 and i guess thats the best. I'm happy its here but at the same time a little pissed uhappy because the 6mb/600 is not offered anymore like that did when the package was introduced to other region.

Connection Manager software doesn't manage anything that I can tell. That includes attempting to re-connect after a drop. I've known dead dogs with more smarts.
IOW, I don't use their software.
Nothing like experimenting with a problem for 3 days by myself, without a single response from SBC in their forum here »AT&T Northeast and I solved it. Probably would have solved it faster by not wasting time here.
Rating dropping like a rock...
BOOM! I think I hit Wile E. Coyote down there.

Initial: 21 days total from order, live 3 days before actual date. I've been through ISDN, IDSL, DSL and cable while living in Texas so I had an idea of what to expect. For the price of $39 (12 month contract), I ordered the 768-1500/256 service. Right from the get go i'm averaging 1270/240 on the line and I'm expecting after the initial optimizing days that it will stay the same or improve. I'm quite happy with it. The support in the forum here is excellent and everyone is very helpful, it's a god send. Everything went very smoothly. One thing to note: I have my email and web hosted elsewhere and I don't read newsgroups so I can't comment on those services.
27 Nov 2003: I believe service has been down a total of maybe half a day. To say that it has been rock solid would be an understatement. I couldn't be happier with the service.
25 Feb 2004: Connection reliability has been great, but SNET is no more. They are now SBC North. I've moved my review to SBC Yahoo.
1 Apr 2004: No new tiers in CT yet. Connection is still rock solid even though I've noticed a slight slowdown and my speed tests aren't what they used to be. If I have a viable option aside DSL either with a different provider or Cable, I would definitely give them a try. SBC DSL is not the best value out there anymore, by a long shot.
July 2004: Good riddance to SBC altogether. Using myeastern.com for cable and internet and Lingo for phone (VOIP). Savings and reliability without the lies, I'm glad is over with SBC

No 3.0/384 Tier available in CT yet, every other SBC state has it. A billing problem, or so we're told. No mention of this when the promotion was offered, don't tell us your going to offer it if your not. Waiting patiently for the new service.
3/7/04 - Update - Still no new service tier, no info, even the omnipotent mrfixit can't get an answer. Done with this. After my contract is up in a couple of months I'm moving to cable.

UPDATE: 02/28/04 Everything is smooth and I have no problems with the service except for one. That is the comparative cost vs speed. Definatly not the best deal in town. I'll be moving soon and Comcast is available at the new place... I may just give them a chance.
12-08-02 Everything is going great. No problems at all
1-28-01
Well, been over a year since installation. Everything is going smoothly. Have only lost connection a couple times. Speed is consistant due to me using Netplex as my ISP. I had a line installed in my home, install ther was about on par with my original review below. Seems that the hardest thing about getting DSL is actually getting DSL. Once you are up it is usually a smooth ride.
Origional Review below.
SNET, do I need to say anything else. Our first appointment was set for September 8th. A technician came out to check the line on August 29th, and told us we were all set. I was with them and all they did was listen for a dial tone, what a joke.
The 8th comes and go's, no one shows up. We call our rep, who retired!, upon talking to our new rep we are given a new date of September 21st. A technician shows up on September 19'th to check the line no signal. Our install appointment is bumped again, this time to the 28th.
Here we are on September 28th, around noon we call our rep to make sure everything is OK, She is in training all week and is unavailable. I transfer to another rep, who is somewhat rude and unavailable to help me. This rep actually refuses to give me her name!!!. Being pi#$ed I call Emerging Services. Believe it or not I actually got a hold of someone who knew what was what and was able to help me.
We were told that there was a problem on the line (we knew this on the 19th), and that it would take about 3 days to fix. They will call to reschedule. Our final install date was on October 11'th. Our modem was in and waiting, The line actually came up a couple of days early.
After a couple more calls to SNET to other details right, such as NETPLEX being our ISP instead of SNET Things are running smooth. The biggest problem I am having now is that SNET set us up at the wrong speed, We ordered 6000/1500, and were given 1500/128. Still waiting on a resolution for that one.

I have now had Cox HSI for over a year now and I couldn't be happier with it.
What a fool I was to stick with SBC SNET DSL for as long as I did.
I have convinced many friends to switch and they are as happy with Cox as I am. Cox can also provide your telephone service cheaper and with a bigger calling area.
I waited and waited for DSL to become available in my area and I now all I do is wait and wait and wait and not just for my connections but also for tech support. I have spent many hours trying to get technical support and have been given different numbers that were supposed to get me to specific areas only to wind up in St. Louis or Orlando when I was supposed to reach Cheshire, CT. I spent 4 1/2 hours on the phone on 3/4 with 90% of that time being on hold only to be disconnected or routed somewhere other than I was supposed to go. Tech support is friendly and they mean well but I don't think that the problem is with them. I think the problem is with SNET and their equipment. I did a speed test today and got 21KBPS up and 69KBPS down and this is one of the better results that I have gotten. I am constantly knocked off line and sometimes the only way that I can get back up is to completely shut down and unplug the modem for a couple of minutes.
IT IS NOW JULY AND I HAVE HAD THIS SINCE OCTOBER. I KEEP WAITING FOR SNET TO GET BETTER BUT IT ISN'T HAPPENING YET. I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE TROUBLE TICKETS SINCE MY LAST REVIEW AND STILL NO IMPROVEMENT WITH THE SERVICE AND TECH SUPPORT IS WORSE THAN EVER. MY MAIN PROBLEM IS UPLOAD CRAWLS OF 10 & 12 KBPS.
THE LATEST TROUBLE TICKET WAS ISSUED ON 7/17. I WOULD BE CALLED WITHIN 3 BUSINESS DAYS. I CALLED TODAY AT 430 PM AND WAS TOLD THAT SNET HAD RESOLVED THE PROBLEM AND THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHY I WASN'T CALLED BACK. THE PROBLEM WAS NOT RESOLVED. I ASKED TO SPEAK TO A SUPERVISOR AND WAS GIVEN ANOTHER TROUBLE TICKET NUMBER AND WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD BE CALLED BACK TODAY AS SOON AS SOMEONE PICKED UP THE TICKET.
I CALLED BACK AT 600 PM AND WAS TOLD THAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IT WOULD BE WITHIN 4 HOURS. AT 830 PM I CALLED BACK AND WAS CUT OFF WHILE THEY WERE TRYING TO CONNECT ME TO A TECH REP. I CALLED BACK AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS NO ONE AVAILABLE FOR CONNECTICUT TECH SUPPORT AFTER 7 PM AND THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHY I WASN'T TOLD THAT.
WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT "Technical support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week" MEANS OR BETTER STILL TELL SNET WHAT IT MEANS. I COPIED IT FROM THEIR WEB SITE. I ALSO COPIED THE FOLLOWING FROM THEIR WEB SITE. "384Kbps - 1.5Mbps / 128Kbps DSL Internet Service".
I HAVE GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE I CAN'T BELIEVE ANYTHING THAT SNET SAYS OR PUTS ON THEIR WEB SITE.
I finally gave up on snet dsl and just accepted the bad service instead of trying to get them to fix it. Last week I finally got motivated and ordered Cox Cable High Speed Internet. Three days from order to working. The speed makes snet dsl look like a turtle. My lowest test results were faster than snets highest especially on the upload speeds which are 3 times as fast. I callled tech support twice with self installation questions. The tech picked up both times in less than a minute. I would probably still be on hold if I was calling sbc snet. At least I didn't have to wait long on hold to cancel my sbc snet dsl service. I only wish that I had done it much sooner.

Now, I got a letter stating that my discount is $18/month, bringing my rate to $31.95/month unless I qualify for other unspecified discounts.
FRY IN HELL, SBC!
First bill arrived. The online advertised $26.95/month is charged at $49.95/month.
Run like hell!
STOP CALLING ME ALREADY!!!!! First it's sales calls after it's running; now it's repeated "how's it going?" calls. I don't want a buddy, OK? When I want your opinion, I'll write it out for you, wrap it around a rock, and throw it!
Tech support was truly impressive handling start-up glitch (bad board at the CO is my guess).
All reps are exceeding polite! Fun people, even!
3 weeks up, and they're still calling and mailing (snail, not e-) to sell me the service I already have.
If you're no longer a phone customer, you can't have DSL. Allowing phone companies to be ISP's is an abomination against all that's holy.

Well, if you have enough technical knowledge to take care of yourself and you are NEVER late on your bills, this would probably be ok.
But, they turned me off for being a couple of weeks late on payment and are making me wait more than 10 days after I paid up in full to get it back on.
The tech support knows much less than I do, and I don't really know enough to support myself well on PPPoE DSL connections.
Customer service and tech support are incompetant and rude. These are qualities that I think many of us are used to from utility companies. An actual ISP would be much more likely to treat the customer with respect.
