Ordered $29.95 (12 month contract rate) 1.5/128 pkg with 2wire 1000sw for $149 with $99 rebate via internet on 6/2/03 - rep called 6/3 to confirm order and set activation date for 6/9 - and offered to sell me more network cards, etc. I had an Alcatel STH laying around, so I put filter on and waited for a sync and the 2wire. Got a sync in the a.m. on 6/6. Fedex delivered the 2wire later that afternoon. Standard SBC Dynamic PPPoE setup, sync rate on my modem shows 8000/1100, cap is set at 1536/160. Speed tests show approx 1220/135. Have had some intermittent disconnects, etc, still looking into occasional slow PPPoE login by the 2wire. Also, sync rate flucuates occasionally. overall, good experience, good deal.

Got my self-install package as promised 3 days after order placed with Nevada Bell/ASI Joint Marketing. Once I received my Self Install kit from ASI, and my new computer from DELL I got the modem and PC ready in under 1 hour. When I tried to register the DSL line to begin billing, I encountered a catch 22 situation with the "Free 1 Year MSN Internet" package from DELL. They require you register with them before you can go anywhere on the Internet. ASI requires you register with them prior to going anywhere as well. I was able to get around this with a little trial, error and creativity. I was up and running once I got thru that.

After I ordered the service, it took 3 months for the line to become active. They just kept calling me and telling me there were going to be more delays. They told me that they would call when the line was active, but I ended up finding out myself by just playing with it and calling tech support. Their tech support is obviously just pulling all of their information from their computer and have no computer skills at all, but what do you expect from a telephone company? Where I am, I see about 150 down and 13 up realworld. I always get that bandwidth and I have never had a outtage problem since I got it (4 months ago). Although, I should be seeing a max of 198 down and 16 up, it doesn't reach that. I definately reccomend it, but the only problem with it I see is that it uses PPPoE to connect. It is not a true "always on" connection because you have to log in with a PPPoE client the same way that you dialup with a 56K modem. I started out using NVBell's PPPoE client, NTS Enternet 300, and it was just problems. Sometimes it would take 5 minutes to start recieving data and countless logins. I found this PPPoE client, (»user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/) RasPPPoE, it starts data transfer the second it connects. It is much more reliable and much faster. It takes a little effort to get it installed, but once you do, you will be very happy with it and the service.

After a six month delay from the original expected launch date for DSL in my area, my request for prequalification was accepted on October 14. After being assured that I would receive a call back in 5-7 working days (which never happened), I called back and was told that I did in fact qualify for all DSL speeds available from them. One thing I've learned about Alltel is that if you want a question answered, call back 5 or 6 times, and then the most commonly heard answer is usually correct.
Once the order was accepted, I agreed to a 2 year contract, so installation and the Cisco 678 router were free. After a small snag in the delivery of the modem, it finally arrived at my home. I opted for Tier 2, which is 1Mb down, 256k up.
Installation was a snap, Alltel sends a disk that has an automated script to set up the router and configure basic settings.
Once the router was set up, there was a problem. No WAN light. It took 4 calls to tech support for Alltel to straighten the problem out. Apparently, the rerouted phone line for DSL's mapping was changed in one of Alltel's computers, but not the other.
After the headaches, everything has been running smooth. Ping times in games (from a 56k modem) dropped from 250-350 range down to 40-90. Downloads have been up to 160KB/s. Speed and reliability have been excellent.
Dynamic IP, NAT routing (had to set up some routed ports for some apps to work correctly, like identd in IRC).
