After a harrowing experience with Internet America, I ordered service with
OnRamp Access for DSL. From the start, I had nothing but wonderful results
with this company. The salesperson was very helpful, and while not very
technical, was able to find the answers to those questions I posed that she
could not answer. I went with their Business Solution, but I was looking
for 3 bridged IP addresses. The salesperson put me in touch with one of
their senior technical people and they quickly decided that what I wanted
was easy for them to do. It didn't match exactly to any of their "standard"
DSL types, but they were more than willing to work with me to get me exactly
what I wanted. The circuit was installed and ready about 2 weeks after I
ordered. I worked with one of their tech-support people to bring the line
up (had some minor DHCP issues) and was ready to go. The tech-support was
very knowledgeable and --much to my surprise-- had direct access to all of
their servers and routers. This made it a breeze for him to troubleshoot
the DHCP problem and get it fixed quickly. My Email was already setup and I
was up and running within about 30 minutes of the circuit being installed.
3 DHCP-assigned IP addresses, 1.5/128 speed, 2 email addresses on a
virus-scan email server (with more available if I want them) for about $50 a
month...half of what I was paying at Internet America for MUCH better
service. On the technical side, I have had some issues with packet loss (5
to 7% max) at times but it's never been consistent enough for me to bother
calling up and trying to get it fixed. I highly recommend OnRamp for anyone
in the Dallas/Austin area. They are one of the big-boys, but the more
personal service and competitive pricing makes all the difference.

  • "Few and Far between"
  • "No Network monitoring, No knowledgeable Tech support, Poor response time."
  • "Very poor ISP with a very poor customer service attitude."

Other than the fact that on install someone came, installed the router, then, left without a word, the install was acceptable. We did have to call and ask if we were DHCP'ed etc. The problems started about 2 months ago when I began to get severe packet loss. I called their Tech support, who informed me that no, they had no one monitoring their Network (NOCC), and, that he really didn't know anything about DSL (this is what happens when you deal with a company that provides many forms of connections). I could have swore that their Agreement said 24 hr Network monitoring, but, this definately wasn't the case.

I did various Ping/Trace's to Cisco/Yahoo/etc. The trace's were all dying out in the same place. A node on their network. I explained this to the Tech, he said UUnet was having a problem, and closed the issue.

The next day I experienced the same issue. 1 of our 2 computers couldn't even connect. I was given the same response. Closed issue.

This has been going on for the better part of 2 months now. My packet loss is around 50%. At times, I can't even reach the DNS server. They play it off as UUnet (are we all that gullible?). Expect never to get a response from Tech support email, as, I have sent numerous mails and never a response.

Bottom line, this company has no idea you are out there once you sign on. Their Tech support is admittedly inadequate, and, had they not oversold their areas, this might not have happened.

When it worked, it is nice. When it isn't, which is often now, it's unbearable. I finally found a copy of their SLA (Service Level Agreement) and it stated that there are no gurantees with their service. I wouldn't recommend Onramp to anyone.
