At this point in time it's hard to write a fair review since I've only
had the service for a few days. I signed up for for residential premium,
which states the speed would be 768 kbps and I'm averaging 300 kbps. The
service is so new that it will take some time before the installation
crew and others are up to speed. My speed has to do with the fact that I
am 5 miles from the transmitter, I am told. They only used 100 feet of
cable and the antenna is about 70 feet up.

Wrong ISP

It would seem that you posted your review under the wrong ISP. Southern Star doesn't porivde wireless service, nor do they provide service in Georgia.

Unheardof direct support! (DirecTV Broadband Price $50/mo. equivalent at Sstar is $75/mo.)
Speed slightly below expectations. Not an issue. Appears to be a result of increased provider utilization since DirecTV.
In Louisiana State, the only provider we found that can provide replacement for Telocity / DirecTV Broadband Sevice.

We hosted our website, from our own equipment
at DirecTV Broadband, for the past two (2) years.
We were one of the first Telocity Customers in
New orleans, LA, before DirecTV bought them out.

DirecTV Service was disconnected Feb. 14, 2003
(thursday), and we went with a big name provider
whom we subsequently dropped on Feb. 18, 2003
and replaced with the provider being reviewed.
Souther Star.

Southern Star was the only provider who could
replace our Telocity / DirecTV Broadband Con-
nection and did it with lightning speed. We were
down for less time than it would have taken for
the "big name" provider, to change out our freshly
connected end-of-line equipment and make
changes on their network to accomodate our
original static IP order requirements, after
attempting to hoodwink us into trying to buy
a much more expensive level of service.

Southern Star made the Telocity / DirecTV
Broadband transfer work for us.

Regards...

Static IP address, back-up dial-up service at no additional cost, domain hosting on that IP address or elsewhere $15.00 setup and $5.00 a month. No filtering, no shaping, but "stated" 20 gig per account level per month (1-3 user, 4-9 user,10-19 user and 20+ users). Back-up dial-up service at no additional cost. The closest local offering with similar services is i-55 Internet. I-55 does not provide secure webmail, and back-up dial-up service is only from your DSL phone number and only for 5 hours a month. Otherwise, i-55 will bill you for dial-up use.

Re: Southern Star. John was extremely helpful, willing to bend over backwards to get me up and running after my previous provider went out of business. He also was able to overcome Bellsouth's mistakes. I would recommend him to anyone.
Thanks,

Personal. Prompt. Pleasant. Always available. Updates. NEVER DOWN!
Had to deal with BellSouth as well - oh, well.
The next best thing (after Dell) to having a computer (still doesn't beat good sex or food, however)

John Souvestre came out to my home to set up Southern Star service. It
should have been a routine setup, but John ran into one obstacle after
the other. I was beginning to question my choice of Southern Star as my
ISP. John just kept working, never losing his positive attitude. When
he finished, all three of my networked computers were on line, working
with the router, software firewall, antivirus program and browser
version of my choice. I didn't have to compromise, John made it all
work together correctly. Try to get that kind of service from the “big”
guys.

That was a week ago today. Not once have I needed to reset the modem,
router or reboot my computers to restore a connection. I have had no
problems and not one bit of downtime. What a wonderful positive change
from my previous ISP!

Kudos to John and Southern Star!! I highly recommend this service.
Five stars in all categories.

Residential DSL Customer

Update:

Having moved away from the area and dealing with other ISPs, I'm even more convinced Southern Star is the best.

After months of trying to secure DSL for our organization, it was such a
relief to finally be introduced to the services of Southern Star. John
at Southern Star made our switch from ISDN/T1 to DSL a breeze. His
professionalism and knowledge far surpassed our expectations. We have
60 users at our headquarters and 14 remote locations that were all set
up in the most efficient manner. We have now been with Southern Star
about a year and have had minimal down time. The rare occasions that
technical support was needed, a knowledgeable staff was readily
available and able to help (and even phoned back!). Being an IT
professional I deal with various technical companies and have learned
that a good product is nothing without good support. With Southern Star
you get both. I would highly recommend Southern Star for all your DSL
needs.

Stable Mable!

I give Southern Star 5 stars in every category. I am so pleased with
the stability most of all after experiencing problems with both Cox HSI
and Bell South. The set up in my case was just to transfer me from Bell
South, which the owner, John, handled completely, and which took about 5
days. Once I put in the settings, it has rocked ever since! I use my
connection largely for VPN and the difference is so startling; no
disconnects, not a one in the five days I have used it whereas I was
used to two or three "drops" per day. The speed seems to be fine, as
well. John answered all the questions I had before I ordered it, and I
think the best thing might be that if I do ever have a problem, I can
talk to someone without being on hold forever and ever with "tech
support."

I am so happy I read the Southern Star reviews here on Broadband DSL
Reports and found out about it. I don't think there have been any
exaggerations, and I would highly recommend them to anyone and everyone.

Can't wait to add my 2 cents worth. I selected Southern Star as my new ISP
(dumped Bellsouth) after reading the honest reviews given here on DSL
Reports. I upgraded my computer system and found out that my old Bellsouth
modem wouldn't work with my new system. Bellsouth refused to send me the
proper equipment needed for free. I got fed up and started looking. A friend, who is the computer guru for a local Non-profit company, suggested I call John at
Southern Star. This friend's remarked that his entire network is NEVER down and smokin' fast. Just like the reviews posted here said, John answered his own phone and we began to discuss my needs and his services. He gave me a timeline of just
under a week and we went from the time we hung up the phone.

John came to my house about 7pm the night of my install. (Try getting a
lineman or tech from Bellsouth to work around your schedule) He checked the
strength of my line with a high tech looking gizmo and informed me that he needed to call Bellsouth and have them "boost" the signal down my line. (I then wondered
why Bellsouth hadn't done this before...while I was a customer!) He
installed my new modem, did a few tests, made a few adjustments and I
haven't had a glitch since.

Whether you're tired of your old provider or are looking for an alternative to your soon-to-be-out-of-business cable hook-up, call John at Southern Star. If you are finally ready to dump that out-date dial-up modem and start surfing with the big boys, Southern Star offers the best, most personal service available anywhere!

Sincerely,
Bo Walker

I have been thoroughly impressed with Southern Star's ADSL service. The service and support provided is absolutely second to none. John Souvestre, the operator of Southern Star, took the time to fully explain ADSL service and the installation process. The information he provided was both helpful and accurate.

While you might be able to find broadband access for slightly less money, in my opinion, you will not find a better value for your money. I would highly recommend Southern Star to anyone in need of broadband Internet access.
