I am an IT professional with 12 years of experience in programming, networking/system administration, and network security. I chose Southern Star as my dedicated DSL broadband ISP, and I am very glad that I did. In a short amount of time (less than a week) Southern Star was able to reprovision my DSL (my service was formerly with Bellsouth) and get me up and running with the type of dedicated DSL that meets my requirements. Finally I am rid of the PPPoE nonsense that Bellsouth was forcing on me!!! Southern Star truly has a level of technical support that is above and beyond what you will get with the huge dial-a-robot ISPs. I highly recommend Southern Star - 5 stars in all categories. When you really need support, you can call Southern Star and talk directly with someone who has the knowledge to help you diagnose and fix the problem. You won't be hassled about the equipment you're using or the OS you're running if you're a power user like I am.

After a long search for the perfect ISP, I finally found Southern Star, man what can I say. The tech support is A-1, the speed is great, the connection stableness is superb. John had trouble getting Bellsouth to do their part but his relentless desire to see his customer happy was beyond anything I've seen. I selected Southern Star DSL for my home service in Destrehan LA. The technical support is top notch, and the service / performance is outstanding.
If you want a DSL provider in the New Orleans area that has technical mastery of all aspects of your link to the web (software, hardware, operations, and phone company technical service support), Southern Star is the answer.
I am totally pleased with this provider.

I had been using Verio (HORRIBLE) for my internet cafe and after much troubles, and after my contract finaly expired I switched over to Southern Star. John (the owner, who answers the phone!) was very helpfull on the phone in setting everything up for the switchover and told me it would probably take 7 days to get the line switched. The line actually ended up being swapped by bellsouth in 2 days. The prices for business access were very good, $125 for the basic service and $25 more for a bank of 16 ips (Verio was gouging me for almost $400 a month, Bellsouth was $75 for 1 ip)
I had major troubles getting my netopia router to work properly and John put in several hours of tech support to get everything right for me including telneting into my router and fixing all the things I had screwed up . The customer service and tech support from Southern Star is truely fantastic. After dealing with Bellsouth and Verio tech support (I had a level 3 at bell south ask me what I ment by a 'routing table'!!! What exactly are their job qualifications? that they come in?), it is SO nice to be able to actually get someone on the phone that knows what they are talking about, knows how to solve the problem and is even willing to do so!
As of this writting, I have only had my connection running for 2 days, but with all of the support I have gotten so far, I can not forsee that I will be having any troubles in the future. John is really a fantastic guy. I would strongly recommend anyone in the New Orleans area to go with Southern Star.

31AUG2001 update below Previously I wrote:
"Southern Star has been around since the days of FidoNet and BBSes. (Regrettably the BBS is now closed but I keep prodding the SysOp to put it back on line via telnet.) If you want knowledgeable, friendly service, this is definitely the place to be. System administrator always attentive to problems and always keeps system "tweaked". Result: Top quality service with minimal down time. NO outlandish unfulfilled promises here. If they can't provide a requested service, they tell you UP FRONT -- No "BS" excuses. Static IP at no extra chg. Mult. mail boxes if required.
Service is ADSL ~980/256. PPP (dial-up) also available. Phone calls answered or returned promptly. Tech support good. 10 out of 10 rating in my book."
"The system continues to improve and more bandwidth is being added. The support continues to be first-rate and the SysOp is involved -- virtually 24 hours/day. Service quality like this is very seldom seen any longer! A great deal, in my opinion. After almost 5 years of SERVICE with Southern Star I am still a "happy camper".
=Update 09JUN2001:= And the bandwidth, service commitment and response remain at the "top of the best". Additional bandwidth being added as I understand, to keep up with the growing demand. Traditional Dial-up service still available and very reliable as well. Nothing negative to report here!! THE SYSTEM ROCKS!

Southern Star got our service installed in about 3 weeks with very few problems. The only problem was a router misconfiguaration on our part. They walked me through fixing the problem and it has worked flawlessly since. They provided us with one static IP, which BellSouth couldn't. We got a router to run DHCP and NAPT, so we didn't have to do any reconfiguration in our network. I would highly recommend them to any small business or residence.

I've been a Southern Star customer since the days when computer bulletin board systems were popular. As my need grew from BBS access to basic internet email, to full dial-up internet access, to ADSL, Southern Star was always there to provide reliable solutions. Not many internet users can say that they have been with the same ISP for more than six years, as I have!!
By the time I was ready for ADSL service, reliable internet access had become critical to the successful operation of my computer consulting business. Since Southern Star had already proven to me, year after year, that they could deliver reliable service, they became the obvious choice after talking with ADSL subscribers of other companies.
During the planning phase, owner John Souvestre was very helpful in providing me with the technical information that I needed to make an informed decision. My objective was to provide ADSL access to all of the computers in my small office, including an AS/400. With John's knowledge and guidance through this stage, I not only met my objective, but experienced absolutely no problems during the set up process.
Once I gave Southern Star my ADSL order, they took care of everything, including configuring the ADSL router so that all I needed to do was plug it in. On the day that I was notified by Southern Star that the local phone company had completed my set up, I was prepared to spend a few hours to get the equipment and connection working. As it turns out, when I connected the ADSL router as instructed by Southern Star, it worked the very first time!!! There was a minor problem with my original PC configuration which John Souvestre quickly identified and resolved.
On occasion, I have experienced some minor slow downs and brief interruptions in service. In almost every case, when I've called Southern Star to report the problem, they were already aware of the problem and were working to resolve it. These problems have never lasted more than a few minutes following a report to Southern Star.
I would highly recommend Southern Star to any person or business looking for a reliable internet provider.

The Society of Clerks Secular of Saint Basil is an Orthodox Catholic (Eastern Orthodox) religious order. It is therefore extremely unusual for us to make a recommendation outside of the religious arena.
However, the service which we have received from John Souvestre and the Southern Star has been so exemplary we feel obligated to make comment.
We have been on the InterNet for over a decade. Our first ISP, in Charity, well, it is now out of business. We went with Communique when Mark Lewis was just starting it up. The service was good, and Raul Z. would work through any problem we had. Communique merged with Verio, and the service remained OK (5 on a 1-10 scale). Then Verio made major changes in their service, and informed us we had one week to completely change our system (we had been running WC, beginning with WC1 through WC4.20 and wcGATE, with some complicated programs added to make the whole thing work).
We had contacted Southern Star a few months before Verio informed us of their proposed changes, and immediately contacted Mr. Souvestre to determine what assistance he could render. He immediately set up an account for us, and assisted us with making our system work through Southern Star - it required less than an hour of telephone conversation. When we changed to WinServer, Southern Star was again immediately available with assistance, and we made the changeover and were back on line inless than an hour.
At the beginning of 2000 A.D., we decided to change to a DSL line. The first DSL momdem we obtained was defective, but Mr. Souvestre assisted us with changing to a new one, and again, in less than an hour we were fully functional.
We have had a few minor problems fine tuning our system, but Mr. Souvestre has been there to assist us when needed. We recently changed from "Linksy's Network In A Box" for internally netwoking the 5 computers at our New Orleans (Harahan) faclity, to a HUB and Server. Again, Souther Star was immediately available to assist us with the fine tuning.
Southern Star has a main system, and backups. There have been occasions when BellSouth's system was down (once BellSouth dug up and damaged their own lines), knocking out all systems in the general aea. Southern Star immediately informed us of these interruptions in service, which actually were not Southern Star's fault. The customer concern expressed by Southern Star even extended to informing us our system had failed to pick up mail after one of our recent maintenance procedures.
Our system is the main communications system for our Order, linking North, Central, and South America, Australia, Europe, South Africa, and the Middle East; providing WEB services, message and files, publications, for our members and the general public, as well as religious research facilities.
It is very important to us that this system works properly, as it must be for everyone who is connected to the InterNet. Southern Star has provided us with an InterNet connection that works, and we do recommend Southern Star.

What can I say? I am a computer consultant and I put my reputation in Southern Stars hands without any worries. I use them for all of my internet needs, connections, regestrations, anything. They do what they say, they are there when you need them and they know their stuff.

I've known the folks at Southern Star for a while now and can say I've always been pleased with the service. The quality of technical expertise and a genuine desire to achieve total customer satisfaction are always evident. The ADSL service that I use from Southern Star has always been reliable and when there's a problem with the telco (there is rarely one with the ISP) John Souvestre will make sure it gets fixed at the soonest possible moment. It is a pleasure to continue doing business with Southern Star!
