I made the leap into DSL last week. I found DSLExtreme because my office uses them. I used to be with PacLink (no longer offer DSL). It was a pretty smooth
install. The ready light was flashing on the day of my install. I called their tech support. They called the phone company, and it was fixed that day.

So far so good. My speed is around 1100k down, with a static IP. I supplied my own modem (I had from PacLink) and I got the second month free. Pretty
good deal so far. I'd recommend them

P.S. I was worried that they might go belly up, like all these others. So I asked them some tough questions. He said they are privately owned and actually profitable (gasp!). And that they are doing very well and plan on expanding regionally this year. They'll probably get bought by some huge corporation in a couple years. All the good ones usually do.

I hope all you guys are right
Pre Sales information:

03/26/01 my email:jcjd@earthlink.net

This is step one for me. I have begun my journey of choosing a new DSL service provider and I have chosen to go with DSL Extreme. I will give updates as things transpire.

Background:
I have been using Earthlink DSL Service since 9/22/00. Their service has been fine. I am using an Efficient Network's Modem with Netgear's RT314 Router to share the connecting. This allows me to keep my connection live with the router with out leaving any of my computers on, also Earthlink only "sees" 1 computer.

Anyway, everything has been fine with Earthlink until I decided to bring my websites in house. Earthlink uses dynamic ip's and blocks port 25 which is used by email servers. So I find myself in the market for a DSL provider with a static ip and does not block any ports.

I have decided on DSL Extreme using Pacbell's residential 384-1500/128 basic dsl. I have chosen to go with DSL Extreme largely based on other posts about their service. Plus DSL Extreme has other services available if I need them in the future.

My initial contact was encouraging. I actually spoke to a human who was able to answer my questions intelligently and politely. I only got tranferred once because I called the wrong area.

I do hope everything goes well

NetGear RT314

I am having trouble configuring my NetGear router to pass through FTp and Telnet and SSH ports to my primary machine sitting behind it. Has anyone set this up to work?

(For example, if I telnet to my external IP I get the login prompt for the router itself.)

I just want to say I've been quite happy with the service of DSLExtreme.
Prior to signing up with them I was a PACLink customer. But, because of a
restructuring of their company I was forced to get a new ISP. I originally
went with Version, I was up for 5 days. Then my connection went down.
After 9 very frustrating days of run-around tech. support I canceled my
subscription.

When I contacted DSLExtreme I was given a week to be hooked up. I was
actually up and running in 4 days. My DSL is running on a Linux box and
has been running without a problem.

I give them 10 out of 10.

One happy customer,

Worried, I call support and they refer to telco

I am concerned, I ordered Covad via DSL Extreme 2 weeks ago and have sent email asking for a commit date with no response. Trying to get an update I called after hours (8:30PM) and pressed 5 for support. It dumped me to a message that said I should call telco support. No option to hold for human, tried 3 times to see if I missed an option, there are none. I hope the favorable postings here are valid customers, I based my decision (3rd attempt to get DSL) on them.

Update 3/23
Spoke with person finally, it appears an honest mistake was made and my order was misplaced. This resets the 3 week wait time back to zero. Ah well, if the service is a good as represented here, I will wait.

Has anyone called support after hours? If so, what happened?

Re: Worried, I call support and they refer to telco

That's the only thing I don't like about DSL Extreme. Before 10:00AM and after 6:00PM and anytime on Sunday, no one is available at DSL Extreme. Other than that, I think they are a great company. This is one of those "to good to be true" situations. With the high level of customer service they provide, I just know they won't make it. I have had problems, but they work their butts off to get it fixed, even gave me $30.00 dollars off one month because of my problems. I have had the techs on the phone at 6:00PM and he stays late in order to resolve the problem. I've had them there as late as 8:00PM. Very happy with them.

Concerned about Tech Support Hours

I need a DSL service, but like most people, I work from 8am to 6pm. I would think that by now they would have hired some evening support techs. I'm an ex-Winfire victim who is looking real carefully before signing with another provider.

I signed up at the end of January so got in on the $39.95 offer. I got my filters and modem in 2 weeks. The scheduled hook-up date was 21 Feb, but I plugged in the modem as soon as I got it and 3 days later the modem light popped on. Was up and running 10 days before the scheduled date. No installation snags at all. Service has been very good with only 1 short outage, 1 modem reset (problematic Fujitsu modem) and consistent 700+ kbps speeds. Mailboxes and news server is only 1 hop away, and they use a much better backbone than the snarled up Verizon bbnplanet. I am a former Verizon Americast cablemodem user that had promised 1.5Mbps service but rarely achieved 300 kbps. I am 1000 times happier with dslextreme! A great company providing fast reliable service at a good price. I highly reccomend them.

768/128 kbps, static IP, 5 mailboxes, a great news server and 40 buck a month; what more could you want?

I'm re-writing my initial review, since there seems to be no way to add to it. I've had great service since November 2000 but in the past 10 days things have gotten bad. DSL line goes dead often and I have to re-boot the DSL modem 5-10 times a day. Things are worse in the evenings and weekends - prime time - during which DSL Extreme's Tech support is closed.

Their techs are helpful when available but have not been able to solve the problem. They say Verizon is having problems but when I talk to Verizon they "test" my line, tell me all is well, and to contact my ISP.

Am I the only one?

Well, I don't know where to begin.
I've been trying to find a dsl service that is at least decent.
I've tried Earthlink, Pac Bell, and you name it.
I've just been stood up by all of them.
I then came across DSL Extreme. I thought it was going to rule.
But I get it and I've been getting crappy connections sometimes only as fast as modem speed. I've called support and they havent been able to help me. I've been getting like 300kilbit connections at the max and I'm starting to hate all of this.
It's like it only happens to me.
Please help me!!
What can i do?
I dont live far away, maybe a mile from my TElco.
I just can't get anything to work!
What should I do?
I know DSL EXTreme is a good co, but where did I go wrong?

no you are not the only one, I am capped at 300kbps all the time also. don't they promise 384kbps - 1500kbps? we are not even getting the minimum promised!

their tech support is very good, but I can't stand the connection speed. I know my line is capable of higher speeds because I used to have flashcom(the turtle died) and I got the max promised speed of 608kbps (from Covad). I have a feeling PacHell capped my line to 384kbps max

Actually I got this problem fixed. DSL Extreme really helped with this and Pacbell inded CAPPED ME. So get DSL Extreme to tell them to raise you to 1.5mb. That's what happened to me. Now I get about 1.3mb/s which is about 150 kilobytes/sec. Its Great now!

Get DSLExtreme!!

I was so excited about geting DSL, I sent my information even before I had a working home phone. Anyway, I contacted DSLExtreme on Feb 19, 2001 and I got a call within 48 hours (as promised). DSLExtreme said that it might take 2 to 4 weeks, but someone will call me with a turn-on date. I got a call from Maggie on March 2, 2001. My turn-on date was set to be March 14, 2001. Following Monday, I got dls modem and a NIC card in the mail. Couple days ago, I tested the line and it didn't work. Tonight I tested the line again.

It works.... Link light wasn't blinking anymore... To my surprise, dsl is set up already. Six days before my turn-on date.

I had absolutely no problem with installing, it was easy. They answered all my questions (I didn't have much question).

I am not sure about the speed though. I know it's much much faster than dial-up, but I had very high expectation. DSLextreme had a speed test, which resulted 1184k down. I try the same test through DSL Report. Those tests came out to be 750k down and 680k down. I also try to download netscape comunicator from netscape server, it was downloading at 64K bytes/sec = 512k down.

By the way, I am about 3000 cable feet away from CO. So I was hoping for full 1500k down. Maybe it's congested time right now. it's 11:30pm. I'll try in the morning again.

I heard so many horror stories about geting DSL, but am I lucky to have found DSLExtreme?

I shall write again soon.

You picked the right provider.

I've been with DSLExtreme for a little over a month and so far they have been excellent. As to your speed problem, I notice that sometimes I get a little lower reading using the speed test here on DSLREPORTS. I think that might have a lot to do with traffic. One thing that really did help me out was the "on line tweak testing" located in the tools area here on DSLREPORTS. I did the test and then downloaded the file it suggested....installed it in my registry..and..sure enough, it picked up my speed noticeably.
If you haven't already, you might try doing that (unless you're using a MAC in which case I haven't a clue what you should do) .If you''re still having speed problems after that....try calling Dean at DSLExtreme tech support. I'm sure he'll get you up to full speed without a hitch. The guy seems to know his stuff.
Good luck and enjoy your DSL as I am.

Your download speeds..

One thing you need to remember is that while you have the capability to download @ 1.5 it is rare to be on a site that can provide YOU with that much bandwidth. Most sites have hundreds of people downloading from them, especially Netscape, so you can chalk up the speed to that. Not to mention everyday net congestion. Glad you found a good isp though

Tweak your setup!

You're close to the CO so you should be getting higher download speeds. There will be slow periods on the net, but you should average 1100 or 1200 downloads. Have you setup your OS software correctly? Windows is by default setup for dialup connections and needs to be changed for broadband. Go to the tweaks forum and they can help you get more speed if you haven't done so already. Congratulations on your install.

It took a little bit to get me up and running but every snag along the way was with PacBell. PacBell has some major problems but DSLEXTREME was right on top of things. I think the longest that I was ever on hold when calling tech support was maybe around 30 seconds and I think that there was one time that they didn't answer the phone until the third ring. They have been right there when you need them. (PacBell should take a few lessons from these guys on how to run a business)

Since I've been up and running....it's been smooth. I've been getting 1274 down and 109 up. I'm not complaining. I also like the fact that I have a static IP address. At $39.95 a month, too. (I think it's $49 a month now...but I got in when they were running a special). I would highly recommend DSLEXTREME to anyone.

If you have had any bad experiences with other ISPs....DSLEXTREME is a breath of fresh air. I'm looking forward to a good long relationship with this company. They do it right.

Re: consider the following

does pac bell (isp-wise) have static ip availability? I don't think so. Are you trying to say that pac bell is better since they have a zillion people more than DSLextreme? That's what I deduce. True, one's "physical" path via DSL is usually provided via the local telco, but does pac bell provide this guy's network connection? Does pac bell have power over DSLextreme's DNS servers and internet access. Of course not. Overall, your argument is weak...

ABSOLUTELY WRONG!

This is wrong information.

We do not use Pac Bell anything except for the circuit itself. We run our own network entirely, including Routers, DNS, bandwidth, mail servers, web-servers, etc...

This is not a "branded" Pac Bell service. Pac Bell provides the circuit, and that's all.

That is why our service is completely different, and we believe much better.
