Ive been having dsl outages since I signed up with dslextreme in 2009. As it was explained to me by tech support, my circuit has reached a maximum capacity (other dsl customers are crowding the bandwidth at peak times). So my connection gets dropped frequently beginning around 5pm until at least midnight.
If you decide to go with this company be sure to SELF MONITOR for quality issues. If you think you may be having trouble, call in but be suspicious of techs who may tell you that everything looks fine (I believed them for several months until they finally saw that the circuit was in fact maxed out). Its important that YOU monitor your dsl line quality because they werent doing it for me. Use a tool like dslreports ongoing monitoring.
Also, you can only be reimbursed for the time you begin documenting the issues (so stay at it, and dont let them close tickets until your problem is resolved) Im still working to resolve my problem because Im bound by the contract. I just wish dslextreme would provide reliable service-that's got to be in the contract somewhere.

| Your problem is physical....not virtual "As it was explained to me by tech support, my circuit has reached a maximum capacity (other dsl customers are crowding the bandwidth at peak times)." That only applies to cable not DSL....they were probably speaking about your DSL readings! In order for your signal to be stable. It has to stay within certain parameters. Taking into consideration distance and speed. Example, attenuation=distance......a signal that registers 60db attenuation is the same as distance at 16000ft.
Your download speed is fluctuating. Line not properly filtered, too far away from C.O., trouble with the copper lines. Are some of the major factors that can cause your speed fluctuating! Connect the DSL modem directly to the incoming cable (MPOE) and test from there. You will have to disconnect all the internal wiring at that point to get a better idea, if the problem is "outside" or "inside" -- The Future is uncertain but the END is always near! Jim Morrison

Lets see.. I ordered on the first, and was online on the 9th. Line was activated BEFORE I got my modem. And it was a 1 day shipping speed too. At first I had problems with only 220KB download, but the smart people at DSLExtreme got SBC to set me at my rated speeds after some calling and emailing. Nothing could be better Well, other then their NGs failing to upload me all 1.9million headerfiles :P
Update: I've been having problems with my phoneline and was basically getting disconnected at night almost constantly. dslx_tech stayed with me even through the constant "do another line test"! request. Then he got Tier 2 personel to help debug my line, and found out it was due to the old phone we had that was hardwired. After getting it removed, it was a matter of minutes when they called me back and said that I was back up to speed. I haven't seen 15 minute resolves in years. DSL Extreme is great for the price, in fact, a bit too great.
Another Update: It finally works! All because of a broken splitter I used. They said they would call me at 6PM, and they called at 6:01PM. Not only that, they solved my problem in under 30 minutes. They bumped up my rate back to normal in a matter of minutes from their tech support too. If you aren't with DSLEXtreme, and you can get them, DO IT NOW! You wont regret it, honest to god. ^^
Update [2/26/2006] Their service is still great. They are using DHCP IP allocation now, so you don't have to type in anything to get connected. I had a couple of minor errors which were fixed. I've been running in the clear for the last 6 months Good job DSLX Update [9/17/2008] Still a great service. I haven't had any downtime at all in the last 2 years, but I did experience a couple of hiccups where the internet would go out for a second. Only happened a couple of times. But recently, spot on maximum downloads. Update [5/7/2009] I upgraded my service after moving to a new place, now I'm at 6mbits down, and 768kbps up. Only problem was that my service took 2 days longer to install because they forgot my apartment number. Other than that, it was good service. I haven't had any problems recently to talk about. Overall, still good.

Well, after starting with Netcom dialup in the early 90's, then becoming a Mindspring customer, then MS DSL in 2000, and the EL, I recently dropped EL and changed to DSL Extreme. No reasonable upgrade path to their 3 meg service (I'm on a dry pair) and the $49.95/month price for 1.5 meg service are my major reasons. Yes, I know I can call EL every six months, downgrade to dialup, etc., etc., but I feel that's too much of a hassle for a long-term customer to have to go through. I'm on the 3 meg DSLX plan at $36.95/mo through SBC.
I ordered on 10-13. My DSLX activation (lineshare) was Friday, 10-22. Free Westell modem lease. I had sync, but couldn't log on, as of 8 p.m. Friday. A call to DSLX Tech Support (about a three minute wait) resulted in a tech immediately contacting SBC to determine that they hadn't set me up correctly. Tech committed to calling me back on Sunday to see if the problem was resolved. However, as of noon Saturday, problem solved. And should I mention that the tech was easy to understand, and knew what "router," "SP2," and "firewire" were? I had heard their tech support was superb, and my first experience with them confirmed this.
Dialup is $5/month extra, but I never used it when I had EL anyways, so I don't think I'll miss it. The Westell Wirespeed modem provided on a free lease is kinda big, but I think I'll just use one of my Speedstreams instead-- I think it will work.
11-7-04 Update.
My speeds have been steady at about 2.2 meg, and my max download was set at 2.5. I IM'd the DSLX tech in their Broadband Reports forum, who said they would check into getting my max raised to 3 meg. Sure enough, less than 2 hours later, I get a call from a tech who says I am set at 3 meg. On a Sunday, no less!! Pinch me--I must be dreaming!!
5-19-05 Update:
After six months, I'm still very pleased with DSLX. There was a minor issue a couple of weeks ago with a DL speed problem that affected me and some others in the local area, but it was resolved quickly. The support through George in the DSLX forum here has been outstanding, and I can't complain about the help I got when I had to call in early in my install. These guys rock!! If they service your area, they're your best choice for DSL!
8-11-05 Update
Still great service from DSLX. Line has been rock-solid, and I consistently hit max speeds for my connection. Pings are about 80ms to the east coast, 8-9ms to my first hop.
I still visit the EL forum here every now and then, to make others aware that changing DSL providers can be a good--no, GREAT--thing.
9-8-2006
Another year with DSLX, and still no complainst. Renewed for another year at the 3-6 meg D/L package. I don't come here very often anymore, as my DSL has been rock-solid for almost two years.
11-4-2008: Still a happy camper, even after change of DSLX ownership and swith to Google for mail. Service is consistently good, no downtime. So good in fact I rarely visit BBR anymore!!
5-6-2009: Still a happy camper. Cannot remember the last time the service went down. Absolutely flawless performance for years now.

I was relatively pleased with dsl extreme. The speed was slow on the download side, but they were not much slower than other services i've had. I switched over to AT&T dsl and they sent me an email saying that I need to send them back my modem that they "lent me" within 30 days or I pay them $99.99. What a scam! They never sent me anything and there is nothing I can do to prove them wrong, other than the review of all my discussions with their representatives who should have noted that i was using the powerstream 5100 modem, not their own (since I never received one). Does anyone know what I can do other than complain through my credit company? Has anyone experienced this before? Now I cannot even log onto my DSL extreme page.

Ordered and self-installed a 3M/512K 12-mo service online. Activation was quick, about 3 days. Received the first modem a couple of days late because of missed UPS delivery. It didn't power-on correctly so I had trouble connecting. Called up tech-support (pleasant except for long waiting), went through some reset procedures, got offered a replacement modem, which arrived a few more days later, and the new modem (which was brand new, unlike the first faulty used one) worked perfectly out of the box. Smooth sailing.
Actual speed is about 2.5M/300K which seems reasonable for this kind of DSL in the apartment complex. The price is right, $20/mo for decent speed is the best I could find in my area. 2 things I don't like: (1) having to deal with AT&T for the basic landline I had to put in ($10/mo) because I just don't have any use for the landline, (2) 12-mo contract to get the $20/mo price kind of sucks because I don't know how it'll affect me when I later move out of this place, I don't want to get slapped with a fee for disconnecting simply because my apartment lease and this 12-mo period are out of sync.

Had Earthlink's PPOE - sucked worse! Had HUGHESnet satellite, got FAPPED every month...dialup before that via Earthlink - that totally sucked.
Ordered 768K/128K - that was supposed to be $29, performed badly. Switched to the 1.5K/512K at $39/mo and then they kept screwing me around about having a "contract".. friggin beancounters need to be taken out and SHOT! Now paying $50/month for month-to-month service. UHUH...
Have had 4 modems in 6 years - is that good or bad? I dunno...you decide.
Port 445, 135 and 139 blocking never seems to stick - I can't think of a better time to simply DITCH DSLextreme and go to FiOS. My plan would be trading a $110/month combined cost for one that costs $70/month...do the math!

"Generally reliable service"

"Unreasonable service termination policy. A bad conclusion to an otherwise positive relationship- not exactly a brilliant policy!"

I've been with DSLX for a number of years, and service was fairly reliable and reasonably priced so I wanted to keep the service when I moved. However DSLX stated that they CANNOT provide service to my new location in Oregon. Based on that, on January 29,2009, I canceled, sent in their modem as requested, and thought that that was the conclusion of a decent business relationship. Not to be. In early April I received a generic letter from DSLX, dated March 31,2009, stating that my account has been canceled ( I thought I did that in January) due to non payment of a final payment of $250.
I've never been late or missed a payment in all the years I was with DSLX so I called them and was told that the $250 is a CANCELLATION FEE. You want me to continue to pay a monthly fee or the lump sum of $250, I reasoned with the customer service representative, for a service DSLX is unable or unwilling to provide me? Yes, that is the DSLX policy - EVEN if we cannot provide you service you must pay or face collection. What an outrageous policy! You take what has been a positive customer experience, built up over a number of years, and blow it up by one final insane and utterly unreasonable action. An absolutely brilliant marketing strategy!

| Question to GM of Dslextreme Hi, Im concerned , I have decided to leave Time Warner Roadrunner after 11 years of service due to them placing CAPS on their bandwidth following Comcast and others. And their service has been poor since they acquired Adelphia.
I have decided to try DSLextreme because I trust Leo Laporte, and Ive read many positive reviews.
I had to order at&t phone service, and am awaiting that to complete then I will order DSLextreme.
QUESTIONS: I watch a lot of movies and TV online I belong to Rhapsody and I stream my web cam and other video on Stickam and Ustream, (1)Will you be capping my bandwidth? as the cable internet companies seem to be doing. (2) If I sign up for the month to month no contract will I still be fined $250.00 if I am unsatisfied with Dslextreme or problems due to At&T etc and I cancel? can you clear that policy up please....?
Thanks for your time. RandyPinball Chatsworth,Ca

@dslextreme.com | Not the GM Obviously the original poster's problem was that he contracted for a year - in other words he bought extra months in advance.
If you're month to month, you can cancel at any time without penalty.

| Re: Question to GM of Dslextreme If you can find any other supplier of DSL in your area, go with them. Since "updating" my service with DSLX, I can connect less than half the time. It appears that each time the cost of their service rises, the quality of the DSL drops. Calls to "support" tell me that everything is fine, or maybe I should go around the house and disconnect all the telephones. I started at around $19.00 and could access the internet all the time. My monthly fee is now over $25.00, and it's a crap-shoot whether I am able to connect - or not. Mostly NOT.
The billing is a joke. Strange charges occasionally show up that increase the amount due. When I question them, a reply "explains" them, but the charges are mysteriously removed. If I had opted for automatic payment through my credit card, I would hardly ever notice those mischarges.
I have been a long time customer of DSL Extreme, but am so disgusted these days. I would not recommend them to anyone.

I switched from Earthlink on May 25, 2007 while the line was still active so the installation was painless as expected. Earthlink's rates had risen to almost double the price for my same speed. I didn't really need pre sales information, and everything I did need was on DSLExtreme's website. It took about 5 days from the order to get the modem and everything was fine right from the beginning.
So, it's been about two years now and as far as connection reliability goes, I think I have had 3 outages (that I know of), none of them were longer than an hour though. I started off with 768/384 speed. I was getting about 670/310 which I guess is OK. I called up the tech guys about a year ago and asked them if I could get 1500, they said I could pay for it but it would be a waste because of my distance from the CO that I wouldn't get more than 900. So, a year passes and it was time to renew my account this April of 2009, I went ahead and renewed at 1500/384, since it was only $1 more a month. I figured if I really didn't get more than 900 I would just be wasting $12 for the entire year. I did a speed test about an hour after ordering and my speed was 1293/305. I have done 11 tests since upgrading 5 days ago; the high has been 1314 the low has been 720 (don't know what the heck happened there), the mean has been 1283, which I guess is pretty good.
Tech support does seem a little shaky at times, but AT LEAST they are in English. I really HATE calling up tech support and getting a guy from India. Nothing against people from India, but they are usually hard to understand and it just doesn't feel as solid.
At a grand total of $23.83 a month for everything, I find DSL Extreme to be a good deal for the money.
My modem is a D-Link. Model: DSL-2320B
