I live in Columbus, Indiana, 40 miles south of Indianapolis. Have not had any high speed choices in this so called All- American City by the award. Then in September 2000 we got a glimpse of high speed with Vectris Communications, which unforunately went into bankrupcty. The newspaper here keeps everyone informed of upcoming cable service from Insight Communications. Yea right, this has been a pipe dream for over a year and half. They never reported on BRITSYS. Thank you dslreports. I went out in late July and did a check for my location and almost fell out of chair that it was available. I then called and ordered on July 24 and spoke to Ava @ britsys. What a refreshing chance to talk to customer service that is truely there to service the customer. 24 days later I went live with 768/384 ADSL. Did not have a speedbump anywhere along the way. They evened called the day after installation to confirm the installation when well. I have two static IP's and everything went without a catch. I would highly recommend this company to anyone. As for cable when it finally comes. They can pass my house by, I HAVE FOUND MY INTERNET PROVIDER. THANK YOU BRITSYS.

I placed and order with them on July 25, 2001. 13 days later they called me and told me that they figured out I really didn't qualify for the 384/384 SDSL Line and now I can only get a Slow IDSL line and 89$ a month instead of the 99$ a month for the SDSL. That just sucks they should have known in the first place. Doug Walton :-( Very Dissapointed

"Highly recommended!"

Value for money:

On June 25th our DSL ISP (Bluestar/Covad Business Solutions) was shut down by their parent Covad. Notified by Mail on July 6th, our company was told we had until August 1st to switch to the new Covad.net or lose our circuit.

We contacted BritSys and two other ISPs to see about moving to any of their services instead of Covad.net due to Covad's higher cost and less than stellar reviews on dslreports and elsewhere. BritSys won our business with a competitive rate and a promise that we would not have to pay to transfer our service, buy a new router, or pay installation charges.

The BritSys staff understood our impending deadline and was well-aware of the challenge that Covad can be. They took responsibility for ensuring our transfer was as seamless as possible.

Our total business day downtime was a bit longer than BritSys expected due to an apparent Telco glitch. We lost our connectivity at 2:00pm on Tuesday afternoon (July 24) and could not get it restored until BritSys dispatched two techs to our offices. After trying everything they called UUnet and UUnet admitted that they had never gotten around to rebuilding the circuit after the transfer had supposedly been completed. We were immediately up and running following that phone call --Wednesday morning (11:00am).

Many thanks to the BritSys staff!

We have a: 768/768 DSL connection with a single static IP (NATed to 13 workstations) and a Netopia 7200 router. BritSys provides up to 20 email boxes, domain name use, and multiple redundancy DNS. There is an optional $2 charge per month per email address for use of the newsserver which is actually a 3rd party provider.

CLEC party: New Edge Networks
"Worked to get my the best options they could. Kept me informed."
"You still have to have Ameritech involved."
"Well worth the $129/month (though if you're close enough for ADSL I'll be jealous). Great speed, latency and reliability so far."

This is reviewing BritSys the ISP so I won't go into any ramblings about Ameritech. Anyways, I started out ordering 384k ADSL and after doing the weeks of waiting for Ameritech to finally come out, found out that I was 1400 feet too far (at 18600 feet) to get anything but IDSL. After being bummed for a bit I called back BritSys and ordered the IDSL (They had done a great job on keeping me informed as to what was going on, etc which is what put me over the top in deciding to get IDSL through them). After placing the order for IDSL I had to (unfortunately) wait on Ameritech again but they did finally comed out and 43 days after ordering the IDSL line the New Edge tech arrived to do the inside wiring. The NE guy was great and had everything up and running in no time. He ran the wiring while I reconfigured the computers on my network and got the IDSL router plugged in (An Efficient Networks 5871 btw, a great little router). Soon after I was enjoying my new line at speeds 3 times faster than the dial up I was on.

The speed has been great and connection reliable so far. 60-80ms pings (64 byte packets) are the average when going out past the bbnplanet.net network (25-30ms while in the network) and I can consistantly get 14K/s downloads (I did also did one speedtest on DSL reports the day after I was hooked up which reported 119/124kbps and I can say from use that it sure seems like I've been constantly getting those speeds or better).

I haven't had to use tech support yet really, though the NE tech had me call to get my setup rebuilt from a bridge to a router and they not only answered the call right away but were able to get it changed right away too. I won't need tech support much, but when I do, if their normal response time is that quick I don't see any problems there.

Overall I've been very pleased with it. I've had it a week so far and I can say that I'm happily never going back to dial up again. If your in Port Huron and are too far for ADSL or SDSL then I'd suggest looking at IDSL through BritSys and New Edge. There really isn't and won't be any other broadband options available in the forseeable future and at 3-3.5 times the speed of an average 56k connection it's worth it (sure it's more than an ADSL line will cost you but compared to real broadband it's still cheap)... oh yeah, and the fact that you don't have to worry about getting disconnected and the fact that they use a static IP is an obvious great plus too.

I ordered a 512kbit SDSL, with static IP routing, which in itself put the order into the 'business' league. Unfortunately tho, they dont handle their nationwide coverage themselves, and depending where you live, they have associates. There were many problems with my installation causing delays, however mostly these were due to the TELCO and CLEC companies, out of the control of BritSys or their associates.

BritSys were more than willing to put me in direct contact with their associates, etc rather than having me call them, and them call the associate, and the associate call Rhythms, etc. Cutting out this extra layer of abstraction streamlined things greatly, and allowed me to find out more accurately what the current status was. The associate companie's people were also willing to go out of their way and do such things as give me contact numbers and even stay till 10pm their time working on my problems.

Unfortunately its a little difficult to get ahold of BritSys after hours, and it can sometimes be 2 or 3 days before you get a response to non-critical issues, this could use some work, but being that I'm very experienced in networking, etc -- I've not needed to call their technical support (infact other than billing, I more talk with their associate directly than BritSys).

On the up side, BritSys were willing to give me any IP allocation I required, and help me analyze future needs, etc. They're also more than willing to help me with any queries I have, no matter how silly. Also I've found that they and their associates treat me as a professional and with respect -- and realise that nothing is impossible (especially networking wise) -- you just need the right solution.

In conclusion, I'd recommend BritSys (and their associates), however I'd make sure of ALL details beforehand (ie. ability to install new lines, and physical accesses, etc). Most of my issues have not been with BritSys or their associates, but more the TELCO and CLEC.

BritSys bought out my original ISP about a week after I started my service. I didn't even know it happened until I went to Next Oasis' site and read it for myself. Everything is great and haven't had any problems. I was actually looking into BritSys before I went with Next Oasis. BritSys is great and the people there put the customer first. Whether you're talking to tech support or not, everyone is knowledgeable and knows what's going on with you.

These guys are great and make you feel important.

My only problem was me! I finally got connected after changing the PCI slot of my nic card, thus changing the IRQ setting. I had done that once before when trying to network my computers and I thought it didn't work then, so being stubborn I didn't make the change when suggested by their tech.

The reason it took 20 days or so to connect was mostly that it took just over 2 weeks to get the modem from Verizon(GTE). And on that note, their support was also pretty good.

The only bad thing I can say is that they didn't come over here and smack me around for being so stubborn!! But seriously, I really felt that they were there with me through all the agony of trying to find out why I couldn't connect. And when I first ordered the service and then connected, I think they were as excited as I where. It feels good when a business appreciates you as much as that.

I ordered 768/128 and typically (through the tests here) get 600-700/110-122.
It depends on the time of day. This is also through a router and hub shared with 3 computers.

I signed up with GTE for my ADSL service and Britsys.com as my ISP.

On the provider side, GTE has been a mostly positive experience. I had worked with them for nearly two years on getting my local CO xDSL enabled. Finally after years of waiting (and bugging GTE), they installed the ADSL equipment at the small remote CO that services my area. It took a few days before the GTE sales channel know about the install and within a week, I had my install date. I opted for the self-install and the modem (Fujitsu) and filters where slow in getting to my house (my local mail is slow, so I blame USPS not GTE).

At first try, I did not have a connection. I had tested OK all the way to Platinum service, but I had selected Bronze Plus ($32.50/month) due to cost issues. I had read all of the problems with people not getting their service connected correctly or the wrong plan, etc. Although I did have the number of some internal GTE engineers, I was able to get the problem solved via the normal channels. It looked like something at the CO was not set correctly (A local engineer called back within a few hours after I placed my GTE support call). After he did his thing, it was working fine.

Even with the rocky start, I have been happy with GTE. It was not a perfect install, but the people I worked with were friendly and helpful. I think I have only had one outage and it was fixed promptly without me having to call it in.

On the ISP side, Britsys.com has been a VERY positive experience. I had been using Mindspring for years as my regular (modem) ISP and had wanted to stay with them (so I could keep my email address, I had also been generally satisfied with their service). However, Mindspring did not provide ISP services for GTE ADSL customers. I checked the ISP list GTE provided and started calling around.

Right from the start, I was impressed with Britsys.com. Their price was very competitive (17.50/month for Bronze Plus and they also offer a discount for year subscription) and they also supported static IP addresses which was a BIG plus for me. They were also helpful and cooperative about me setting up a server, NAT, etc. at home. Another local ISP was not very cooperative when it came to talking about hosting my own mail, connection sharing, etc. at home. Even though I explained it was just for fun and not a business.

As it turns out, I am glad that I was forced to switch from Mindspring. Britsys.com has been so much better. I feel that I get that personal touch that you can't get with a large ISP.

I did a small problem getting started but the tech support at Britsys.com fixed the problem (on their router) within a few hours and it was working OK when I checked the next morning. I have also received at least one unsolicited FYI call in which the service was down (due to GTE). They just wanted to let me know about it (I hadn't discovered it yet) and that GTE was working on it. This was a nice touch.

Speed has been good. I have test to near my subscribed 128/768. I have had the service for about two months now. I have not had a chance to play many online games yet. I seem to get decent, but not outstanding connections to the Tribes servers I usually play on. Low 100 to sometimes a sub 100 ping.

On the down side, they are new (this is both good and bad). They currently do not have 24/7 tech support, but on the plus side, the tech support availability has been better than advertised. I HAVE received callbacks during yoff' hours. It is my understanding that as they expand, they will eventually add 24/7. Luckily it has been stable enough that I don't need 24/7. The lack of 24/7 is not a problem for me.

They also do not offer news server access at this point. I believe that once again this is due to them being such a new ISP. I would not doubt that at a later date that they might add news server access. However, even without the news servers, their price and service makes it a good deal.

Overall, I will say that I had a good experience because I had contacts with engineers inside of GTE that helped me get the REAL scoop on the availability and schedule for my ADSL hookup. Someone who didn't know who to call, might have had a somewhat harder time. I think that my experience with Britsys.com has been so good because they are new and can give that personal touch. 24/7 tech and news servers would make them my yideal' ISP. Even so, I would HIGHLY recommend them.

    Richard Casto
