Great service at a great price--$50 a month. Equipment came promptly. A little setup was required to get my static IP, but their techs were able to dial in to my modem and make the configuration changes for me. VERY good upload speeds (which is nice--I run a webserver), and very permissive terms of service--try running a web or mail server with a teleco as your ISP.

When I was having some initial trouble getting set up (turned out my Netgear router that I had downstream of the Britsys equipment had a software issue), their tech (who was actually KNOWLEDGABLE about networking issues--not your typical "Well, try rebooting and call me back" idiot I had when I had Verizon as an ISP) called me at 10:00pm on a Saturday night, and spent an hour on the phone helping troubleshoot the problem--THAT'S dedication to customers.

Britsys was recommended to me by 2 friends in North Carolina who are or have been professional sysadmins, and I'm pleased that their service in New York is as good as I'd been led to believe. You won't be disappointed.

The initial order was painless, a quick form to fill out on the web, and I almost immediately received a response from Britsys. I ordered the 1500/768 Cable Buster plan for $45/mo, which is exactly what I needed since I run a family web server.

Once the order was accepted by Worldcom, the wait began - and kept going despite the escalations they kept getting from Kelly in Sales. I think she knows me very well by now, since we've exchanged emails and phone calls for 72 days. Hey, we're comfortable enough to give each other advice. She's always helpful, courteous, and responds timely to any request. I also think she had just as much frustration with WorldCom dropping the ball for nearly 3 months as I did. Although, she probably had a lot more frustration since I was not the only customer in Florida affected by WorldCom's lack of progress.

When WorldCom did get their act together, things went pretty smoothly. Once I recieved an IP address and the line became active, I called up and spoke with Matt in order to find out why my old modem was not working. He verified that WorldCom still had not finished their end of the deal, and verified that the IP address configuration I put in the modem was correct.

Within two days I had the new Cisco modem, plugged it in, and poof - InstaSurf(tm). I briefly spoke with Matt again to configure the modem's IP, and even recieved information on enabling power users like myself to configure the Cisco's advanced features.

Overall, tip top service from BritSys (bad WorldCom, BAD!), full 1500/768 sync, and I'm servin' and surfin' like I should have been before I moved to Britsys. I'm glad I chose to stick it out!

    My Other Reviews·CYBERONIC INTERNET..
This review will be fleshed out after I get everything set up. For now, the online ordering process was very slick- took only 10 minutes to complete everything, and I had a response telling me to expect the DSL delivery within 1-2 weeks.

Dialtone went out on my phone line right around the time DSL got provisioned. BritSys told me to call SBC to get it restored. Given that they put in an order that got the dialtone canned, BritSys should be the ones calling SBC, not me, especially if it means additional charges could be incurred from SBC. Regardless, "not our fault, call your telco" is not the answer I ever want to hear from an ISP at this stage of the game.

The line got installed about two weeks after I ordered it. The provisioning was pushed back a week, a fact I was not aware of until I wrote them about the dialtone issue. I'd have appreciated an update there. Also, the router was delivered to my home, even though I specified three times(twice on the order page, once in a direct email to my install coordinator) that I wanted it sent to my office b/c FedEx often has a hard time w/my home address. I had to go pick it up from FedEx directly, which wasn't the end of the world, but sort of a chafe after I was assured it'd get to me downtown.

All in all, the install process is pretty slick- very little human interaction needed, which I appreciate. I'd have appreciated an update about the provisioning change, but apart from the router things went pretty smoothly. SBC really tanked the dialtone on their own somehow, which I find hard to believe- the tech said that the line was in the wrong block entirely. I'd have expected that if I'd never had dialtone, but I had it and then lost it. I suppose I should count myself lucky that I ever got it back at all.

I'm giving BritSys an above-average rating for value-for-the-money only b/c of the responsiveness of their tech support, and that they can't do much about the fact that MCI hasn't changed their pricing/offerings in a while. $40/month prepaid for 1.5/768 was a great deal two years ago, but it's looking pretty stale now. Hopefully the updated Covad offerings will get them off their duff.

I ordered Britsys DSL for my girlfriend's place and later for mine. In both cases I could not be more pleased. The service is fast, the upload speed is very decent (important since we're running a dev server that clients need to access), and the price is very difficult to beat. Their plans are flexible, so if you want a no frills account you can get that ultra cheap, and add extra IPs, email boxes, or newsgroup access as desired. Their support guys respond very quickly to email (15 min.) and their sales staff are very helpful. Can't say enough good things about them. Very satisfied customer.

I switched (or was switched, actually) to BritSys in May 2003 following the demise of my former ISP, Bean.Net. (See my B.N review at »Review of BEANnet Interactive by jbcg.) The contrast was marked--B.N had let go their support staff, was having frequent outages (some lasting for days) and had become virtually unreachable for support services.

In May/June 2003 I was completely disconnected by a problem at the phone company central office. B.N was unresponsive, but I eventually got a call from MCI. The tech rep there expedited a fix of my problem within 24 hours, including a change of broken equipment at the central office! There was actually a misconfiguration issue as well, and MCI handled both problems as smooth as silk.

Later that month BritSys, the upstream provider for B.N officially took over support for B.N's customers when B.N defaulted on its payments. BritSys sent me a nice letter, explaining exactly what had happened to the best of their knowledge, and what I should do about it. They gave me a contact (Regan) for my billing questions. I was able to reach Regan immediately. She even lowered my $70 B.N rate to Britsys's $45 (plus a tax recovery fee) rate on my request, despite my 1-year contract with B.N at $70.

The difference was immediate and pronounced. Speed became more consistent. Billing started occurring on a regular cycle. The monthly outages completely ceased. And when I contacted BritSys for support, I didn't have to wait on the phone or hope someone would one day reply via email. The response was immediate.

The only possible beefs I could have is that BritSys unintentionally charged me a startup fee with my first bill (fixed with an immediate credit when I drew it to their attention via email) and they didn't provide new DNS server addresses for me during the changeover (also rectified immediately). But considering the pressure they must have been under during the changeover, I'm very impressed with their performance.

The only way that BritSys could improve their service is to charge even less for it. In this area, I don't know why 768/384 ADSL with static IP couldn't go for closer to $30 a month (what I was paying DTV two years ago). But BritSys is the price leader in this area.

But those are minor complaints. I highly recommend BritSys based on my experience.

    Jon

Verizon
CLEC party: WorldCom
"Nice and fast for the $$. Excellent response to emailed questions."
"None to speak of."
"VERY glad I did my research!"

I recently moved and took advantage of the opportunity to switch ISPs. I had Verizon DSL for about 3 years and really had no complaints. Checked DSL reports and saw the Britsys Cable Buster plan ($39/mo + $10/mo for five static IPs + $69 setup = $56.56/mo prepaid for 18 months) for 1500/768 service. While this seemed like a great bargain, I was a bit concerned about the 18 month obligation, the $$$$ prepayment, and the rather strong terms in the contract concerning early termination and the no guarantee of requested speed. From looking at all the stellar reviews here on DSLReports, however, I decided to go for it. Kelly @ Britsys and I went back and forth a couple times with question/answers; she was very timely/informative in all of her responses (and tolerant of my credit card burping due to my change of address).

My DSL modem arrived in 11 days and I got it set up the following day. The speed test to the nearest hub (New Jersey) gave speeds of 1249/630 - not all the way to the top but still excellent! Speakeasy gave 1179/603. Dr. Ping gives an average latency of 58.9 ms - tolerable. Another metric for you: according to DSLReports, my address appears to be 10260 feet from the nearest phone central office, FLCHVAMF (Falls Church, VA).

I had cable internet for several years but wanted to install a Web server at my house, so I looked for a static IP DSL. Found BritSys and have been happy ever since! They sent the stuff when they were supposed to. I got it and had them switch it over so that I could use my own router and it has been great.

They sent me a Cisco 678 router and I have the 1500/768. I just did a speed test now and got:
    2004-04-17 10:03:22 EST: 1251 / 628
Your download speed : 1281602 bps, or 1251 kbps.
    A 156.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 643140 bps, or 628 kbps.

I had a problem last month, which turned out to be my 'inside wiring', but they stuck with me, even sending me another router to see if that was the problem. Their response time was great and I would be happy to suggest them to anyone looking for DSL!

Here's an update - way late. I noticed it says this is a BritSys review. I have no idea what BritSys is. None at all. This is a review of Adelphia Cables broadband internet service in the Eaglerock area. The cost I had listed at $97 wasn't accurate really. That is the cost for the whole package (digital cable included) before all the nice LA/CA related charges. Our cable cost went of about $40 total, so I would call that the cost of the service. I don't think they actually break it down on our bill. To date, their service has been great. I don't think we have been offline more than a few minutes a week at most. The digital cable to our TV is down more than the internet connection. Our actual connection speed has actually gone up by nearly 1mbs since we got the service.

The rest of this post it the original text I posted after we signed up for the service. And sorry to all you folks who thought you were getting a BritSys review. I don't know how the BBR people got it under that provider.

Well, after a year in LA with only dial up available (can you believe it?) Adelphia upgraded our area for cable access. I was really hyped at first, as I called them on a Saturday and it was turned on immediately (but I waited for Monday to pick up the self install kit).

When I tested it with the modem plugged directly into the computers ethernet card it worked fine. First test good, and I moved on. Then came the first glitch. I called tech support. Don't even bother with their level one techs. The one I talked to first was full of crap, and when I called him on it he explained that he was an MCSE and Cisco Certified, and was only working in a call center cube until he got his masters in Compsci. God it must be tough out there! But here's the lowdown:

Their service wouldn't work with my hub unless I purchased another IP for $6 per month plus a $20 setup fee. Since it was the same with ATT @home when I had them in Seattle a few years back agreed. I had asked the sales rep if I needed this and she said no, but I'm an old enough lady to know better than to believe a sales rep.

    Then it got weird.

It worked fine with the modem hooked directly to one PCs network card, but if it was plugged into the hub one computer (the one in slot one of the hub) would continually drop and regain it's network connection and the computer in hub slot two just plain old wasn't there. Same for when only one computer and the modem were plugged into the hub. So back to tech support I go, this time determined to get to a level two tech (this probably won't work for guys, but I find crying will get me to level two techs the fastest. Or telling them that if it's not fixed by the time hubby gets home he will beat me).

After playing for an hour releasing and renewing IPs, the level two tech deternined that my hub doesn't work properly. Funny how it works fine without their modem plugged in, but as Pooh said, "Bother." as he pulled the pin. But other wise, I must say their 2nd level tech seemed compitent.

So here's my plan: Tomorrow I'll run to Best Buy and get a router to replace my hub, after all, it is several years old. If things are fine then, I'll just call and cancel the extra IP and get them to cancel the setup charge (accomplished by the crying technique). Then I'll reply to my review to let the world know how it worked.
