I have had GWI for over 6 months now,the service has been great. There are no data caps and no other hassles like that. The install was pretty quick, when I called the tech support to help set it up,they were very nice and knowledgeable.I get 2000/512 for 29.95 per month and no contracts, with a free modem that I get to keep after 1 year of service.I also have a static IP address,so that is pretty cool, and the connection is very reliable and very stable. The only negative is the 15 minute outage, which was fixed very fast and efficiently,so that is good.I would like a little more download speed, that would be nice,I think they are upgrading us sometime soon anyway.Otherwise GWI is the way to go if your looking for a fast and reliable DSL internet service without paying too much in the Maine and New Hampshire area. They are a good solid honest Maine company, and I hope they continue the excellent work.
Update:Well I have been with GWI for over a year now and, they recently upgraded our speeds to 3000/768 ,I get about 2975/650 normally and pings around 20ms.So everything is still great.I highly recommend them to anyone who can get them.
Update:May 2005,The service is pretty much the same as it has been for the last year, which is pretty good.Except for the price increase from $29.95 to $34.95,but that is expected and at least they had a good reason for doing it unlike most other companies. They have just launched their phone service and I am looking forward to subscribing to it when it becomes available in my area.Otherwise keep up the great work Great Works Internet.
Update:March 2006:I have been using their service for almost 3 years now, and everything has been working great.I may switch to their phone service later on.
Update: November 2007: Everything is still great with GWI. When my modem got fried during a thunderstorm in June, they sent me a new one within 3 days of the incident. So GWI still gets a double thumbs up from me.

Service: 3000/768 and GWILine Unlimited Activated: Jul 2 2004
Modem Provided: Lucent Cellpipe 22A-GX Using Modem: 2Wire 2700HGV
I switched from DirecWay (One-Way) to Adelphia HSI, then from Adelphia HSI to Prexar Business DSL. I switched from Prexar to GWI. GWI checked all 3 of my phone lines to find the shortest loop and painlessly moved my service in under a week. A call to give them my MAC address of my Linksys Router at the time was all it took to get things started.
I had some problems across that time, which they solved easily by adjusting the speed on my line card. Once GWILine became available, I upgraded immediately. Later in time I upgraded to a 2WIre 2700HGV (after using my old 2Wire Homeportal with better results than the Cellpipe they provided). Since I switched modems, I asked them to remove the speed limiter and I see around 400K/s downloads at 15000 feet. According to my diagnostic page on my modem, my line potential is around 5000/868, but I am locked at 3584/768. WELL worth the 30$ on eBay for my modem, and well worth the 78.96 (phone, DSL, taxes, and options pack included) that I pay to GWI each month.
If it weren't for GWI, the choices would be suffering with the Cable Co or Verizon DSL. Verizon won't even sell 3000/768 service here, their max limit is around 11000 feet.
When they come out with a new DSL technology, I'm sure GWI will upgrade to the latest technology then too. In the meantime, I'm quite happy with my service.

Update Jan 07
I left GWI to try Verizon for a while, Verizon had just changed to their newly bought Alter backbone and things were awful for me. So I went back to GWI, this is where the fun begins. I used to have a solid connection with them, now im on a different circuit to what I used to be on and i'm getting constant disconnects. I have a cat5 home run, a Siecor DSL splitter and still gets disconnected every day. GWI told me that Verizon said my line is within specs, its just funny how my line was always solid before I left to try Verizon for a while. Anyhow im getting Roadrunner installed next week seeing as now after the switchover disaster up here from Adelphia they have got themselves in good shape. I will give them a month or two while still keeping my DSL just in case, other than that if RR is good its bye bye GWI.
Update Feb 25
Service hasnt been too good for me lately, im unhappy with the latency. Along the way pings have got higher and im not impressed by their choice of backbones (Qwest being their main link). Verion is available to my address again since they upgraded the equipment in the CO, I contacted a member on here who lives very close to me and he did some test pings and tracerts for me and they were way better than what I can get on my current connection. Yes I get better speeds through GWI but latency is more important to me as my connection is primarily used for online gaming, so I guess as soon as I get back from a vacation abroad in a few weeks I will make the swap to Verizon for phone and DSL.
Update June 5th
I was put onto the new equipment at my CO, Verizon messed it up a few times but now all is well, Im now on GWI's 5/1 meg package and constantly 24/7 get speeds of 4662/850, since being put onto the new hardware my pings lowered slightly too. Ive never had broadband this good, the price as ever with GWI is excellent $39.95 for 5/1, I can get 8/1 for $49.95 but from using the 5/1 for a few weeks now all I can say is im happy with what I have, blazing downloads and totaly stable.
Well yes its a quick update less than an hour but still, GWI called me back and said that I will be put onto their new hardware, so now I sit and wait and see what happens.
Well after having speed issues for about 3 weeks I was told I would be changed to a new card in my local CO and that I would be on their new equipment that would solve the speed problem and also up my speeds to 3meg from the current 2meg. I was told a card change would take 2 to 3 days, so a weeklater and nothing, I email them to get an update. They called me at home and said the card has been changed and that no I will not be on the new hardare and should never have been told I would be.
I was asked to do speeds tests while I was on the phone which was pointless as I had been monitoring the line all week and it was as slow as ever. I did a test and got 661 Kbits per sec, I told the tesch this on the phone and she said they will get back to me on the problem.
From now on Im definately going to start getting peoples name from tech support and taking notes, because one of them tells you one thing and another tells you the opposite.
I will wait to see what they say when they get back to me, if I get the same old runaround then im changing ISP.
Update November 15
Well I did put in a for disconnection with GWI, while I was waiting for it to take place the routing issue cleared Pings are now very nice indeed so I emailed them to say I wanna stay with them. And I must say their speedy response was unbeleivable, within 15 mins my email addreses and webspace was up and running again. Also a few weeks ago I got myself a static IP address free of charge. So hopefully service will continue to be this good and I look forward to using GWI in the future. For $29 what can I say, Incredible.
Original review
Well brefore switching to GWI I was using a local ISP here called Prexar. Latency was excellent but speeds were kind of flakey. I decided to give the cheaper GWI DSL a shot. Took 6 days for service to come online, only problem was the modem didnt get to me ontime so I used the modem from my last ISP and it worked fine. I got the modem from GWI a day or two later. The modem they supply is a bottom of the line Luncent cellpipe variety, pings slightly higher than the Alcatel Speedtouch home from my last ISP but all in all it worked fine (they dont give you the pass and username for the webpage admin tho).
Ok so speeds with GWI are great, its a 2000/512 service and I constantly get 1990/439. The downside is that the pings to most of my gaming servers are 2 to 3 times higher than my old DSL which is due to most of their traffic going through Sprintlinks backbone which sends all my traffice off to Chicago and back even for east coast pings where im located.
I wouldnt say latency is bad because it not, its stable at all times. But when you are used to a 20 to 40 ping on servers then that goes to 70 to 100 over the same copper lines things start to look different. I ping like 10ms to my gateway so its not my connection to the ISP its a routing / backbone issue.
I emailed GWI tech support 4 days ago with traces and questions but still havent got a reply which im not impressed with. So to cut a long story short great ISP for the regular home user, but for me im going back to Prexar because the latency is more important to me than the speed.

I had Comcast High Speed cable for 2+ years an it was "OK". Before Comcast Internet I was using Vitts DSL and it was great. Vitts Communications went belly up and I had to switch ISPs. So, I went with Comcast due to I didn't like Verizons DSL. I don't like PPPOE type of internet access, user name passwd stuff. It should always be on. So, I went with Comcast for my Internet access. Due to Comcast TV rates going up and up. I decided to drop Comcast an go with DishNetwork. Now I had to find a new ISP again. I read on the internet about GWI so I called them up. After a hour of talking with them about their DSL. I ordered it. The DSL modem came a week later and it was easy to setup. I called them up to inform its setup on my end. An 10 minutes later I was up and running. I order the 5mb/1mb package. I get more like 4mb/600kb speed, but Its still good to me. The only thing is I have to reset the modem every day. The packet lose is too high. It's a minor issue I can live with it.

All has been well so far. Service went live on 11/8/04. VZ DSL went dead around 11am yesterday. Reconfigured router from PPOE to DCHP and was connected right away. Speeds were initially very slow. Improved through the course of the day. GWI's speedtest now shows speeds as high as 3650, but are not consistant. Same with upload speeds. This is not a complaint, merely an observation. Speeds with VZ were more consistant on a regular basis. I'm currently on the 3/768 plan. If the sailing continues to be smooth, I will be upgrading to at least the 5/1 plan. Saving $15 per month over Verizon's 3mb plan is a great deal.
DSLReports speed tests show anywhere from 1.4/310 (Speakeasy Calif), 480/276(no joke.Megapath, Calif), 1815/404 (Linkline, Calif), 2751/193 (NAC Net, NJ), 2921/534 (NYC.Speakeasy.net) and finally GWI's own speed test which only shows download. 3 seperate tests, one after another: 1st showed 2400 down, 2nd shows 983 down, 3rd shows 1990.
Again, these are not complaints. I do hope that during the course of the 30 day trial period, GWI will work to try and make the speeds more consistant. I'm sure when things have been tweaked, and the bugs worked out, I will be a satisfied customer.
Speeds have stabilized somewhat upload is slower than it was with Verizon, however, Download is consistantly faster than Verizon (at or slightly over 3mb).
Edited 3/10/05 - Roughly 5 months later and things are still smooth sailing. I did have to recently swap an older Westell modem out due the number of resets required. A Customer Service agent for the company did inform me of a problem with the older one Westells, which despite firmware updates, still have the problem. He stated they seem fine at first, but deteriorate after a while. He sent a Lucent Cell Pipe 22A-GX and a FedEx call tag to send back the other modem. Speeds have been great (normally 2900 to 3100 down and about 650 or slightly higher up). I am very satisfied with service and hope to jump to the 5meg service some time later this year.
Edited 5/24/05 - Cellpipe modem company sent me would lose sync at a certain time everynight. After a couple of weeks I swapped in a borrowed Wirespeed A90 series modem and the sync issue disappeared. Not wanting to get another modem from GWI, I purchased my own Hayes/Zoom X5. Called Tech support to verify some config settings, was told "Can't help ya. We only support modems we provide (fair enough). Tech did help with basic adjustements to set the unit to Bridge only mode. Tech also made comment that Cellpipe series is sensitive to interferance from street lights and may cause sync issue. Thanked him for help and hung up. Kept losing sync, finally got it set correctly and am getting rock solid speeds although the download is a little low for some reason. Tech took a "snapshot" of the settings before he hung up because they did not support modem. I am currently on the 5/1 plan and with new modem am getting a steady 4.7/650. The upload used to be closer to 825, perhaps it will gradually increase as the new modem learns. Overall, I still give GWI high marks.
UPDATE 6/15/2006
GWI has sold some it's accounts to a company called "USA Telephone". They have no pricing on their site for data services and GWI was unable to help with what the rates may be. I was told by a sales rep that thay have sold all but 4 CO's to this new company. I'm waiting to hear what the pricing will be, but may be leaving after a somewhat long and satisfied run with GWI.

I've had the pleasure of dealing with GWI's tech support on a couple of occasions. They were always friendly and knowledgeable. I've also had the displeasure of dealing with TWC, having been routed to Ontario while trying to get ahold of local tech support. Advantage: GWI.
The only thing I really question about GWI is latency, which kills online gaming. It's not horrendous by any means, but it's definitely is a factor. I'm just not sure where along the network between my home and the game server that the lag is coming from.
At one point, I had both GWI DSL and TWC cable services running in my home at the same time, for about a week. I found that if I was lagging on GWI, swapping to TWC made no difference. The lag was still there, and to about the same degree. I repeated this test a couple more times during that week, then disconnnected TWC because it costs more for the same relative service. From my little A-B experiment, I could conclude... pretty much... nothing, really. Maybe both ISP's have latency issues, or maybe the problem is beyond the backbone of either service. Who knows? To tell the truth, I suspect they both lag, but that's just the impression I get.
For everyday use, GWI is great. I like it and I give it an A+. But for online gaming, I give it a B- and that's only because I'm in a good mood. I think living in Maine means we live in the sticks, as far as technology and hardware is concerned. So we have to deal crappy, semi-laggy Sprintnet backbones that aggravate the h**** out of gamers. But it's all we've got, so we deal with it.
Hurry up, fiberO!

Ok this is going to be a long message because i have a ton to say about GWI.First thing is hogle28 most of this post is for you i tried to reply to help you out but says post to old try another so here's hoping you see this eventually. When i moved here to Rumford,Maine from Nova Scotia, Canada almost 2 years ago i moved into my appartment i had the cable guy coming the next day to hook up my cable was thinking of getting their internet service too.
So i'm on the phone speaking to verizon about getting my phone hooked up woman said no problem but do you have a computer? So i said yes she told me they had a package that was high speed dsl with call anywhere USA and Canada together get a great deal so knowing my friends cables cost and her speeds were 3mb download and 712kb/s uploads i asked her how fast was their dsl?She told me hold on for one second so i waited almost 2 minutes when she came back she asked me how fast cable was i told her exactly what friends modem speed tested at.The woman told me yes we have the same speeds with the dsl and we can have the modem there in 3-5 busuiness days so i told her ok then i'll take the package figured i'm living in Maine my mothers in Canada still and the rest of my family and most of my friends are in Massachussettes so having free phone calling them i was able to call my mother every day talk all i wanted figured great idea.
Now for 4 years in Canada i had dial-up getting from 1.4-2.6kb/s download speeds so my modem actually arrived the next day i was online in less then an hour without any help.I was amazed at how fast i was now surfing like lightning compared to my 56k modem lol so about 3 or 4 months went by before i even thought about doing a speed test.So i went to same spot i used in Canada www.testmyspeed.com in Canada i picked international on left and picked Ontario was closest to me while there. So on the map i tried Maine but closest site to us was »speakeasy.net/speedtest/ so there i chose New York first then Atlanta then Washington DC figured do couple each spot get decent average. Now's where the story takes a turn my download read 1.2mb/s and up was 297kb/s i think on uploads was year ago but thats close i believe. So now i'm not very happy and i call to complain and tell them i was told speeds were the exact same as cable if i knew i would of gotten that i'd of had cable installed the next day.So they tell me no someones wrong their fastest speed is 1.5mb which is what i'm paying for.So really now is'nt much i can do i'm in a one year contract now so i bit my tongue and kept that speed. So another few months went by and verizon called me saying they now have new 3mb/s dl speeds would i like to upgrade? So i told them yes because that's what i was told i was getting at the start.
So i get upgraded to 3mb speeds do my test 5 minutes after they tell me i'm set and my fastest speeds were 2.3mb/s with 715kb/s up.Now the whole time GWI was in busuiness but in my building only 56k no high speeds. Then last year in either March or April one of my neighbors called and asked if i could help set their modem up for them.So i went down and helped hook it up it was new GWI modem and high speeds 3mb down and think 768kb/s up i installed modem and did everything needed then had to call GWI to give MAC address i spent almost an hour on the phone with the guy and he was very helpfull not like most i'd get through verizon on the phone.Once we finished her speed tests read 2.89mb/s down and 745kb/s up her pc older and less ram smaller processor then mine.I told the guy that night that come August first my contracts up i want to switch. So by the time august came woman told me speeds now are 3mb,5mb,and 8mb downloads and 768kb/s up with 3mb 1mb up with 5 and 8 so she had me mail a check that day to them for the 86.49 said once she recieves check she'll send modem right out.
So exact same phone plan and the 8mb/s downloads 1mb/s up through GWI was 86.49 and for almost a year with verizon i payed 133.00 a month i have 2 pcs connected and my tests were 3.89mb/s on desktop and 6.27mb/s on my laptop uploading on desktop was 953kb/s and laptop was 989kb/s then at Christmas i saw they're getting new 15mb and 20mb speeds but need new adsl2 modems and if you're paying for 8mb speeds and get new modem they're cancelling 8 and giving all 10mb speeds for the same price.
I called at Christmas and she told me they launched it 3 months early only had 1,900 modems and they're all gone lol my luck.So i was put on the waiting list to get one as soon as one was availlable. They told me where i'm at if go for 15mb i should get 14mb with no problem. So i got the call on wednesday saying modem be here either thursday or friday.I got my modem today and as i started to install it there's a driver it needs first so modem would'nt connect at all till i get the drivers first. And here i am now at 3:15am i had to register at the site first to download, and the spot i selected to read more before i get wrong driver and screw it up it brought me to here.
I saw the post from hogle28 about the dynamic ip and i can help you fix that right now by giving you the link to a free site to download the software thats totally free. You install it register at site and go back once you get confirmation e-mail and go add a host so once you bring the program up and put your e-mail and password in it runs near your clock and keeps your dynamic ip updated at all times its a free dns hosting site so with the software installed and you've picked a host name that becomes your new ip address and if isp switches ip after a reboot or just changes in the middle of the night it stays updated.I bought a 5 port hub instead of a router so no port forwarding since i bought the hub and started running the no-ip software both my pcs ip's have stayed exactly the same have'nt switched once in 4 months i was getting downloads disconnected 3 to 4 times a day without it every time ip switched.
So first go to »www.no-ip.com/ click the download tab and get the file on downloads tab if running windows click that symbol on left if mac click that if linux click that one.Once you've downloaded and installed it i put a copy of mine on the desktop till i finished all of what i tell ya then you can delete it off desktop.Go in start program files find folder no-ip you'll see red circle around the word ip look like no smoking sign right click select send shortcut to desktop then go back to the site and register can hit services tab hit register there next to login.Once you've regged using your normal e-mail account or one you don't use for all your junk and spam use e-mail and password go to account check mail hit link in it to activate account.Once activated on services tab still login there. When you're logged in you'll see on left Your No-Ip below Hosts/Redirects there click add once next page comes up all you need to fill in here is under Host Name you can use anything you want for a name even hogle28 if want it to be easy to remember once host names filled in see just below it has no-ip.info you can drop the arrow down use anything there in the no-ip free domains if go to far down says no-ip enhanced domains those cost money so i pick one thats easy my nik is tat2u2 i used .myftp.org but you can use anything there once you're finished picking the domain name just leave everything else alone go to bottom and hit create host. Now your ip address for example like mines tat2u2.myftp.org you could use hogle28.myftp.org or hogle28.no-ip.info anything you choose its free but making it easy to remember is best.
Now thats done can close browser click the no-ip symbol added to desktop once it pops up check the empty box quick on that popup it won't popup again every time. Now you have a box up called No-Ip DUC v2.2.1 click on edit top right there put in your e-mail and your password you used to register once you click ok within a few seconds you'll see an emoticon looming face appear in the box put a check in the box it'll give him a smiley face and take a sec till buttons can be clicked again. Now go into options and check the boxes run on startup and run as a system service then go to connection tab and check the first box at top there says override automatic connection detection you'll see your ethernet card type and your ip show up in that box. Then you're done unless you want to move slider at bottom to check at a different time for ip changes i keep mine set to every 20 minutes using that or 10 minutes is better then checking for new ip like every 2 hours program could miss it so 10-30 minutes is fine there hit ok and then click the x top right to close it and you're done it'll be beside your clock. If you hover it it'll show you your ip double click to pop it up and read ip in box then hit x to close it again. So now the settings we set every time you reboot it'll automatically be next to clock and within few seconds after you get connected online it'll show your new ip.I guarantee if you add this to your system you'll never have a problem again i host an ftp server so if i had my server up and a friend downloading a file off of me and ip switches i'd have to send him new ip to reconnect now all they need is hogle28.myftp.org and a port and user name and password then they could stay connected to you for days and never lose you.Now it's 4:05 am and i still got some work to do to finish setting up my new modem.I hope you see this soon and give it a try i also hope that anyone else who was talking about it in the forums checks it out too it will help anyone who has dynamic ip thats what its for free dns domain names the same as having a static ip without the cost. You'll even notice if you're using a router and only ip you ever see is 192.168.1.11 or so now you'll see your true isp's ip address given to you hovering the program.Told you this would be a long story but i'll bet it'll help plenty users who read this one post.Good night all and once i get new modem hooked and get a speed test i'll be sure to pop back send a post let ya know how i made out!!!
Tat2,Donnie

GWI is great IF, your close to a CO, and the wiring in your home is new ( less then 10 years old) 99% of the homes are not build in last 10 years. 80% of the customer base is at 14,000 ft giving them very poor speeds and inconsonant connections. I would like to also point out that as a former employee of GWI, I see that 10 of the 12 reviews were posted by current employees.
Calling into support places you on hold ( prime time 3 pm to 10 pm) for well over an hour, calls back are 2 hours if at all that day. Expect to see worst call back and hold times and they get ready to lay off more people.
Nobody comes to the home to install anything, then send you the modem in the hopes that it will work when you hook it up, 50% of the time this is not the case and the customer is then down until then can get somebody to the home, in 99% of the cases that can take up to a week. Leaving you without service until then.
Dispatching to your home is the LAST step. The first thing they do, is tell you the customer to go outside the home with a screw driver, and open the phone NID and try testing the modem and service on your own. This is something everything other company ( ever verizon) will come to the home and do for you.
I would test out GWI and see if you get a good connection and speeds if you do great keep the service, if not cancel right away as trouble shooting could be a long painful process.
**UPDATE** It seems the CEO of GWI felt he needed to post on my review? I am insulted that you would even hint that I would lie due to the fact that I no longer work there. I fail to see how being a former employee makes what I posted fales, it would seem as a former employee I would know better then anybody what the in's an out's of support and service at GWI was? I say was as I stopped working there over a year ago, at the time I was a supervisor at GWI and everything I posted was 100% true.
