I just finished getting my DSL installed by Covad. My internet provider
is Bazillion. This has been a horror story. From the initial attempt
to sign up, throuogh the weeks of phone calls and emails...to the
misinformation from the Bazillion sales person...to the mess around
installation date...didn't get the email till the day before...then
with confusion around the outside phone box the appt. was cancelled, so
I left the house and went on about my business...to only come home and
find they had "rescheduled" my appt. for the same day???!!!!. When I
called to ask about the lack of communication..cancelling and then
them assuming I'd be home and I'd get the email ....they were rude
and unapologetic. Then, after installation, I found out that I would
still need to call Bazillion, sit on hold and wait to have a
techniciation walk me through the settings set up, something that had
not been communicated. They had made it sound like the tech came, did
the installation and you were up and running. Then when I wrote an email
complaining about their poor communication, they replied that my DSL was
up and running and gee what was the problem?! And, I am praying that
the Bazillion DSL service is better than their dial up. There are times
when I have had to go through the dial up process 20 times, just to get
on the web. It usually takes at least 4 times and usually
more. And then, I can be online, answering email and the my web
connection will be disconnected. I still have to go through the call to
the tech get the settings process!!!! I had problems with Quest
DSL also, but at least that whole process was more straight forward. I have
friends with Earthlink and GTE who had no problems at all. Obviously, I
made the wrong choice. I would caution anyone from signing up under
    Covad or Bazillion.

Hercules,Contra Costa,CA

CLEC party: Covad
"was available for my user"
"telephone support line goes in circles"
"support staff are great when i can get a hold of someone"

I'd like to be able to post a nice review - but the situation I'm having is a bit frustrating.

I'm an IT Lead for my company, and we've just implemented VPN. I made a house call on the day of the install, Covad got there a little late but the technician was very pleasant and got us up and running in no time - then it was my turn to do my work.

I wanted to set up a LinkSys router so she could have one IP - turns out it doesn't like DHCP for some reason, even though when I took it home and to the office to pull a DHCP address, it got one. I elected my user upgrade to a static IP.

I put in the order on Monday - was told that it takes 48 hours to process. Well, it's Wednesday night, my user hasn't received an email (she hasn't set up a bazillion email yet) and I was told to call.

I called about 4:45 on Wednesday night, I could not get a hold of tech support. I called the 800 number, got a lovely greeting that the tech support hours have changed temporarily and to press 1 for tech support. So I hit one, and it rang and rang and rang. I got a message saying that the person I want to call is unavailable, then again I get the lovely greeting that the tech support hours have changed temporarily blah blah frikkin blah. So I hit one again. Same deal. Rings. Message that the person I want is unavailable. Lovely greeting.

Called corporate number. Got some fellow in another part of the company when I attempted to Spell "Operator". He tried to help me out - I gotta give him kudos for taking ownership and looking to help me out. But still couldn't get to the support number I needed to see if the Static IP order went through...

UPDATE------No longer have them - they are out of business

Everything was going great for the first 3 days, except that they have not gotten my main e-mail address up yet. When I called to request a second address, that was up in hours. Yet, still no main one. I called customer support, and after letting it ring FOREVER, they said they didn't know or had to ask someone else, or said it should be working(It wasn't).

Then, yesterday morning the DSL went out. I called support in the afternoon. He had me run some ping tests. 1 passed, 1 failed. He said he would do a line check and call me back. STILL HAVEN'T HEARD FROM HIM!

By the way I ordered 144/144. I was getting about 95% of that when it worked.

Anybody know someone on the inside of Bazillion who could help?

    I'll keep you posted.

"Calls to tech support go right o voice mail, but they did call me back"
"It's been great so far..."

Value for money:

I ordered an IDSL line from Bazillion on Oct 31 after reading some of the reviews here on DSL reports. I was a little leary, but the choice was either Bazillion or Verizon, and they had worse feedback. The last review had Bazillion attempting to correct some of their problems, and there's no contract to sign, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

I talked to a brand new rep when I called in my order, and apparently this was his first day. Well, I put in a basic order for IDSL service with a DSL modem as the equipment. The rep was very polite and informative. He said that they were going to discontinue 144/144 service because they were losing money on it, but I have mine. Anyone know if they still offer it? I had read that Bazillion would make promises and never send anything on, but...

That afternoon I got a welcome e-mail from Bazillion and an e-mail from the person who took my order. Later that day I got an e-mail confirming SWB would be arriving in a week! It turns out SWB came a day early. I didn't hear any feedback from Bazillion or Covad, so I called Bazillion 2 days later and got voice mail. I came home from work that night and had a message from tech support saying SWB had problems with the line and they'd get back to me in 48 to 72 hours... Well, I get to work the next morning and Covad has scheduled an appointment to finish my install the next week.

Covad showed up today and took about 1-1/2 hours to install my line. They guy, Calvin, was pretty good and luckily I have 4 pairs running throughout my house. He said that his sheet said SWB ran into problems and couldn't approve the line, and to not get my hopes up. Well, he installed the router and ran into problems. Luckily he knew what he was doing. It turns out that Bazillion has some PVC's through Covad, but only have some of them working. My PVC started with a 5 or something like that. Calvin had run into this before; he got Bazillion and Covad's tech support on the line, changed the PVC to a 4-something, and BAM - I'm up and running. My 144/144 line tested at 115/99 around 11am, so I'm happy with the performance. But I just got it today, so my feedback on reliability, and mail/DNS/news will have to wait. Calvin said that he'd had a lot of problems with Bazillion at previous installations, but now that he knew what to look for he's had a much easier time with them....

That's all I can tell ya. I'll try and update as time goes on. 3 hours of service 2 weeks after ordering, and I'm VERY happy.

    Frank

"Absolutely the worst customer support"
"OK, but not for the weak of heart"

Value for money:

I ordered IDSL since nothing else would work for me and at $49 not a bad deal with all the freebies. The initial installation was bungled three times due to miscommunication between Bazillion, Covad, and BellSouth. The second phase, handled by Covad was fine (I thought). At installation I had no service, the Covad tech called Bazillion and was told Bazillions server were non-functional, but to keep trying throughout the day. After 24 hours, still no service, so I called Bazillion tech support. Their response was that my bridge was misconfigured and I needed to speak to a 2nd level tech. I waited for a return call for 6 hours, when I called them back they said there would not be any 2nd level techs in until Monday, 48 hours later! On Monday, I waited no call. On Tuesday, feeling frustrated, I called the Covad coordination agent (big thumbs up for Diana Villeneuve), she got involved and we made an appointment for a level 2 tech to call me that night. No call. We did the same Wednesday. No call again. I spoke to Lori Lawrenson, administrative assistant to the CEO, and she said she would hand carry the request to support. Still no call. Covad's people were not happy and connected me with Bazillions head of support, Jonathan, he personally guaranteed that a 2nd level tech, Tony, would call me at a specified time. Guess what, no call. I finally got through the unanswered support line and asked specifically for Tony, and he actually called back. It took less than 30 minutes to discover the router had been improperly set up by the Covad technician, and that I was without service for over a week because no one could call me back and tell me which box to check off in my router setup! Since that time, it has been running very well with minor glitches. Bazillion needs to work heavily on their customer support and do the things they promise and they would become a respectable provider. They have a lot of problems right now and I hope they can resolve them. Time will tell if I remain satisfied with their service.

As of 11/17/2000, my connection has been working fine. I have my three email accounts operating, the news server is better than average, but has low retention. The free calling service required several calls to tech support to devise a work around but performed well. I have done the Windows tweaks here on DSLReports and my speed clocked at 134 down and 133 up. As long as I don't have to interface with the actual company, I suppose everything will be OK.

Where to begin... the installation came a few days later than I'd liked, but before their final deadline. The Covad people did the installation like old pros, but that's probably because they are. Then the service begins...

Since day one, I've had no better speeds than 60kps, usually in the 'hood of 45 kps, bottoming out to as low as 15. I'm 3500' from the CO, in Daly City, a municipality just 10 minutes south of San Francisco. For some reason that only Air Traffic Controllers could understand, it makes sense to them to route me all the way up to chicago. Yay. They promise me that they will change my backhall (does anyone else know if this is a legit term, or something they pulled out of their ass) from chicago to SF, as soon as they get their SF backhall online (why did they go live withough a SF based backhall in the first place, it's not like it isn't the hub of all web development on the west coast) but that won't be for another two weeks. at least I got them to not bill me until they fix it. Onto the service...

Their service can bite me. Support never answers their phone, 9 times out of eight I have to resort to calling to sales to gripe at them directly so they can escalate me to someone useful in support. Today, I used this method to inquire about a 6 hour outage, and a support person actually answered the sales phone by mistake. if they have this much time to answer sales calls, why don't they ever answer support?

But I digress. like I said above, business with bazillion is about as fun as getting your teeth drilled by an oldskool dentist with a questionable medical background and a distaste for painkillers and sterilization. Turn back while you still can.

I ordered IDSL at 144k/144k, and the actual order-to-install time was pretty awesome considering Covad warns you that it normally takes 30 days or so from the time you place your order (my install took 11 days).

My equipment is the ENI SpeedStream 5271 IDSL bridge with a DHCP connection.

I did notice that during the day on a weekday, my transfer rate was nowhere near 144k (in fact it was more like 60k), but I think this was probably a function of net congestion because at night and on the weekend my transfer rate is about 135k.

Overall I'm very happy. I can't get ADSL where I'm at, and this is MUCH better than the 26400 connection my phone lines were giving me with my dial-up service.

I ordered DSL through Bazillion 119 days ago. The order has been canceled and reschedules at least 5 times. I ordered transfer rates at 600K and after the fifth reschedule I asked what is going on. I was told that I was more than 15500 feet from the central office and I would not be allowed to get high transfer rates. I was reluctant but, I agreed to 144k transfer speed. I then checked with USWest and found that I am actually 12300 feet from the central office. This was two weeks ago and I have not heard from Bazillionyet . I called Bazillion and was given another excuse that some "Bridge Taps & load coils" on my phone lines prohibit me from getting DSL at all and they canceled my order. So, first I'm told I can have it. Then I'm told that I can't have it at the speed I want. Then I'm told I can't have it at all. I spoke to USWest and they said that this was not true and that I could get DSL. Does it really take 119 days to figure out what is going on?? I will be trying another company. I highly recommend telling everyone you know NOT TO USE Bazillion.
