We had DSL with Acunet/Harvardnet last year, but their very good and reliable service was discontinued. After a few months suffering with dialup ISDN, we found these guys [on DSL Reports]. We've now had 768 SDSL with them for about six months. It has been great. Installation was timely as promised, with even Verizon doing their part, plus good support from NAS. We've had two brief outages in 6 months as a result of equipment issues at the local CO, but the problems were quickly resolved. Speed is great. There never seem to be "bottleneck" problems, up stream, downstream, anyplace. We don't use them for mail. We just recently switched our DNS to them and got good support and a smooth transistion. The news server has long retention but too many incomplete posts in the binary groups. So we subscribe to Newguy where there are no such problems.

I would recommend Realconnect.com to anyone, and I hope they stay in business forever.

ADDENDUM as of Jan 8,2002 - Since I wrote the above review, the news service is greatly improved. Binary posts are generally as complete as on Newsguy, and retention time and upload/download speed is significantly better than our paid subscription to Newsguy. Thanks to RealConnect for this!!

NAS is all right by me

I am also a customer of NAS in neighboring Stow, and they're great! 768 up/down, outages pretty rare. The only issue I had was at the beginning: good 'ole Verizon didn't want to install the line for quite a while. I had finally succumbed to ordering Verizon's inferior service when they agreed to do the install.

Had these guys install my SDSL staic 256/256 and they were great. They took care of the Verizon loop and the tech support was excellent. After hearing all the horror stories posted about DSL installs and service I had steeled myself for the worst and what a great surprise! They worked fast to take care of a couple of changes I made and were extremely responsive. The DSL service itself has been great with fast as expected ping rates. Email the same tech guy with questions not some faceless support site that doesn't know what's going on.

If your getting DSL and can use these guys definitely check them out.

very consistent line quality, nice and fast, great install. once the router was in, i had instant gratification.

well heck, for being one of the few providers out here, they are a damn good choice if you don't mind the cost.

Overall i am very pleased. I just wish i hadn't skimped and gotten the 256k. oh well, 144 will have to be enough. being of the only areas in Ashburn with copper instead of fibre, and thus able to get SDSL, i should have exploited that. If you live in the older areas of ashburn, like over in the older sections of ashburn village, you are most likely blessed with copper. Anyhow, the service has been up consistently since the very cool install tech left yesterday. i downloaded 111.5MB of updates for my linux box in just under an hour. which was awesome. i ran the dsl reports tools for connection speeds and it checked out pretty darn close to the bandwidth i ordered.

I would have really appreciated a little more documentation about news group servers, processes to get email account set up and all that rot. as it stands i had to email my sales rep a TON of times as questions arose. one thorough document with things like DNS addresses, news servers, what is offered in the way of web hosting, etc. would have been VERY helpful.

My only other beef is the price. but since there isn't much else available out here and i was tired of dialup, there wasn't much of a choice. but as i said, so far i feel that i made the right decision in a provider. and once you get off that modem and onto this, the price is worth it!

and sorry for grilling you so much Suzannah (my sales person), i really appreciate all the hard work you did for me, you were great!!!! you answered all my questions very fast and got me what i needed to be comfortable. and you actually answered your phone. that meant a lot. thanks again.

i got a Lucent DSLPipe SDSL remote access router. got 5 usable static IPs. and am giddy with my new toy.

I had to use Realconnect because of a unique situation in my area; I'm surrounded by mega-internet corporations, most within 3 miles from me. Yet, the CO that serves my area still believes the year is 1981. It took almost 2 years for NAS to finally get their equipment in our CO! Realconnect is one of the only DSL providers which will provide service to my area.

I called them up around mid-January to place my order. They were very courtious and quick to respond to any of my questions. I was informed that my area was loaded with fiber, which meant that all I could get was IDSL 144/144. This was fine with me, since I spent 6 years running my servers through a dialup account!!!

Installation was quicker than I had expected. Everyone involved went out of their way to make sure I would be a happy customer.

I am very impressed with all the services provided by Realconnect with my account. I get free line monitoring, etc. And the speed is exactly what I expected/am paying for.

Realconnect is definately the place to go to if you live in Ashburn, VA and are looking for an ISP to handle all your DSL needs. If they can find a way to lower their prices, I'm sure they can easily take over the DSL market in Ashburn...

My install was for IDSL 144/144. I got a Lucent Pipeline 50 as my router. 5 static IPs were also included.

I started my order with Priz*Net (like several others) when they were running a promotional deal for $59 for 128/128 SDSL. It took Verizon quite a while to get the CO upgraded for us and then quite awhile longer to come out and run the line. Around when it was supposed to be installed (x-mas 2000) Priz*Net was acquired by RealConnect. RC took over the installation process. The tech that came out to actually install the modem was from Network Access Solutions I believe, but he knew his stuff. The total install was less then 40 minutes. Anyhow, he left with the modem only working to the CO - and not beyond. Nothing he could do but open a trouble ticket. For the next 7 days or so I had to constantly ping RealConnect as to what was the problem and when will it be fixed. There was a pretty major lack of information sharing going on between RealConnect and Network Access Solutions on a problem with moving lines from former Priz*Net to RealConnect. I would have liked to have been updated more often during that period by RealConnect, but I understand they were just as frustraded as I was. Anyhow NAS fixed the problem and I was up and running. I'm getting 90-95% of my IDSL max for both ways, so I'm pretty darn happy. The line has yet to go down and I have yet to have a single problem. Pings are what you would expect from a IDSL line, very low. For online gaming -- this is the king. I've hosted a few multiplayer games (Age of Empires 2 and Diablo2) and have not had many problems except for a few dropouts in AOE2, but I don't think that is a idsl problem. Napster works fine as does every other thing I have tried really.

I hope new ISPs come in Ashburn / Broadlands over the next year. It would be nice to see lower prices and others types of service. $59 is about the maximum I will pay for internet access. There is no way I would pay (or recommend!) $109 for a IDSL line. That's just too expensive.

Lowdown:

-Broadlands location, townhouse area right across the street from the elementary school.

-$59.00 a month (from former contract with Priz*Net)

-128/128 IDSL line, getting 90-95%

-Pings are fantastic, if you play online games like Everquest/Quake/UT this is the line for you

-1 Static IP

-Installed on a home network of 4 computers with a Linksys 4-port router

-They could do a little more on their website to provide more information about the lines. They could also work a little more on keeping the customer updated while problems are being fixed. Current price of their IDSL ($109) makes it so that I refuse to recommend to neighbors to join the service. Beyond that, it's a rock solid connection, has yet to go down in 2 weeks - which is what really matters in the end.

I originally ordered a 256K SDSL circuit from a company priz.net. Priz.net decided to get out of the DSL business and sold their customers to Realconnect.com. Realconnect handled my actual install. At some point during the install process my circuit was changed from a 256K SDSL circuit to a 144K IDSL circuit. This information was NOT given to me. After the install I noticed that the speed (obviously) was not 256K. I called to inquire and was told that my order had been changed to IDSL because I have fiber in my neighborhood instead of copper. While this statement is true, I do have fiber, it should make no difference to DSL speed. I pointed out that one of my neighbors on the same CO has a 768K service directly from NAS. They couldn't explain that and apologized for not being able to offer me anything other than IDSL. The IDSL circuit installed is also SLOWER than my old ISDN line. I'm currently in the process of cancelling service and moving my account to NAS.

I guess my issue is that NAS seems to be able to offer service rates beyond what realconnect can offer on the NAS network. I'm also frustrated that I was never told that would be getting an IDSL circuit and that the IDSL circuit has slower performance than an ISDN circuit. I also never received any information for mail servers, news servers, mail accounts, etc. I had also originally requested a 13 static IP network and instead received a single IP address. Realconnect did correct that last issue before the install was complete.

I can't recommend Realconnect to anyone as an ISP. Unfortunately while they do seem to be concerned about customer support, they apparently lack the technical expertise to support DSL customers.

Hopefully Realconnect can overcome some of these issues, but in the meantime I would suggest going to NAS directly or trying one of the many other NAS resellers in the area or even Telocity.

Addendum:

I did some research and it turns out that IDSL is the only DSL type that will run over fiber between a CO and a residence. Apparently my neighbor must not be on fiber yet. In that sense, Realconnect did what they could. However I wish they had informed me beforehand.

Now I have to see if there's any chance I get a phone line on a pair of wire instead of the fiber.

I'm still not happy with Realconnect, but I am going to talk to them to see if we can get something resolved.

You're right, except for one thing...

EKevin, you're right about your posting; they should have let you know that you were being downgraded. In my case, they did just that and for the same reason: fiber. In fact, I got the call this morning... :-(
I only wanted to clarify that I am 99.999% sure that you do not have fiber running straight to your home. The fiber is between the CO and one of those big telephone boxes that each neighborhood has. From that box to your house is all copper. The problem lies with Verizon... In order for us in Ashburn (specifically, in Broadlands for me...) to get anything better than IDSL, Verizon needs to upgrade those big telephone boxes into 'Remote DSLAMS'. Remote DSLAMS installed in such boxes basically convert the DSL signal running through the fiber into one that will run on the copper. It's like having a 'mini CO' right by your house. The other positive to this is that the distance of the copper is now measured from your house to the remote DSLAM, not to the CO. This makes the copper pair a whole lot shorter and makes much higher speeds available to us.
So, we need to wait for Verizon to get off their butts and take care of our area, which from what we have all seen, will not happen anytime soon... They just don't care. If they did, they would do something about all the people living in Broadlands, which happens to be just at the 15000 feet limit and more...

As far as your neighbor, I would be VERY SURPRISED if he indeed has a 768k connection from NAS, since they have confirmed that their rollout in the Ashburn CO was limited and that high speeds would not be available until an upgrade later this summer... Are you sure your neighbor isn't bragging about his/her speeds?

Re: You're right, except for one thing...

Yes, I was reading about the remote DSLAMS earlier. Given that it has indeed taken Verizon almost 3 years to actually allow the CLECs into the Ashburn CO, I imagine it will take another 3 before they bother with the remote DSLAMS.

My friend lives over on Blacksmith Square and does indeed get 784K service. His d/l speed is consistently 700K +, but his upload usually hangs around the 256K point. It's SDSL, but acts more like ADSL.

I have no idea what to do now. I've tried calling Verizon in the past, but you can never reach anyone that actually has anything to do with DSL deployment. If you're lucky you find a customer service rep that at least has a high school education.

I might look at Starband, but I'm not thrilled over the concept of two way satellite and the cost is prohibitive ($600 for equipment and install.)

Ugh.

To whom it may Concern at Dslreports,

I have recently ordered IDSL from Real Connect. The service I have received
has been absolutely fantastic. I was amazed at the follow-up of the Real
Connect representatives. Especially Suzzanah R. Suzzanah was
informative and very helpful. After hearing so much about DSL complaints by
my friends of other DSL providers I was really worried that I would get the
same run around. I was wrong Real Connect and their staff went above and
beyond to get my DSL installed and working properly. The speed I get is
great and the quality of bandwidth is great. I am extremely pleased being in
the Internet business to see services that enhance the content of the
Internet. Hats off to all the Real Connect staff. You guys/gals are great.
Real Connect gets a 10 out of 10!

I received an unsolicited e-mail from RealConnect that they were offering DSL service in Leesburg, VA where I have a home office on the south side the town. I had been talking to Bell Atlantic/Verizon for almost a year and they could not give me any idea when DSL would be available in Leesburg. Strange because Leesburg is only a few miles from the heart of the Internet and the HQ of AOL, WorldCom, PSInet, UuNet, and dozens of other Internet and high tech companies. Many of their employees live in this community. Many ISPs I contacted said DSL would be available next month, whenever I called. RealConnect said that NAS had installed the DSLAM and as soon as Verizon could install a line to my NID, they would install a router (free) and I would be up and running with SDSL. They did promise IDSL if after testing the Verizon installed line it would not support SDSL. The downside of IDSL was 144k max-ever. They did tell me that there was a small chance that the line would not work at all. But there was no risk on my part as they asked for no money until the line was installed and working. 30 days after I signed the contract, RealConnect called and said the line was in and ready. I made an appointment to have NAS's contractor install the router. They arrived on time but the only glitch was the line would not support SDSL so IDSL it was to be. 40 minutes later they finished programming the router and installing the line to my hub. One call to RealConnect and I was online after changing my network setting. Instructions were easy to read and understand. I ran the DSLreports speed test and it indicated 120k download, within 80% of the 144k max, which is what I expected. Upload was a bit slower at 100k. I notice a big different over my dial-up dual channel 128k ISDN line.

Update 10/16/00: So far 2 minor outages. The problem appears to have been on NAS's side. Both times it was fixed promptly. The last time was in the early evening. Early the next morning NAS sent a tech voluntarily to my home office the make sure they could communicate remotely with my rounter. (They suspected a problem with the password.) I am still very pleased with the service and support.

Up date on RealConnect

Still happy with RealConnect. The service has been 100% until a major power outage in the area - electric power was off for 5 hours at my office. When power was restored, DSL service was down at my PC. After a call to RealConnect, I was back in business in short order. They followed up with a call to me to make sure everything was working in good order.

I'm living in Ashburn and talked to a RealConnect representative yesterday - it all sounds rather good, just that only IDSL is available for me because of the distance of over 18000 feet to the next CO! As Jim mentioned earlier it is still impressive to have a speed of more than 100k I'm still reluctant because of the bandwidth that goes down when too many people are using DSL in my neighborhood!
109$ a month as opposed to 29$ which I paid for cable in Newport News, VA (Cox) makes quite a difference ...

Summary: for small businesses could it be suitable but for me as a private user it's not competitive yet! Hopefully competition in this area is picking up soon ...
